in The Week • Thursday 25 April 2013 13 Homes & Gardens Spring is here ... After a seemingly endless winter, the arrival of Spring with lighter days, warmer temperatures and the occasional glimpse of a large yellow orb in the sky, tends to lift the spirits and make us think of all those projects and plans made during hibernation. Given the delays between writing these articles and printing them, we have to assume that those early indications that the seasons were finally changing have continued to manifest themselves. It’s a time, not just to embark on major projects but to look towards ongoing maintenance as well - windows, guttering, central heating, carpets - as well as finally being able to give the garden the attention it deserves. Regular maintenance now while the weather is kind can save expensive and unfortunate mishaps later in the year and this applies even to the simplest, but most important parts of your home, such as your smoke detector. If you have been planning something more major, like a new kitchen or conservatory, we've included a couple of first hand experiences from experts in their fields to perhaps give you a little inspiration. In our next Homes and Gardens feature, we'll step outside into the garden and come up with a few tips and ideas for outside the home.

This is held to celebrate the link between Burnett village and Red Maids' school which was founded by the Lord of the Manor and

prominent Bristol Merchant, John Whitson. Whitson's bequest of the manor of Burnett in 1634 was to provide instruction for the orphaned daughters of merchants and aldermen and that the said girls 'should go and be apparelled in red,' hence Red Maids. This is a tradition that has been upheld for centuries and the next concert is on Thursday 9th May at 7pm in St Michael's church, Burnett, BS31 2TF. Tickets are £20 and include the concert, a hot meal and a glass of wine. Tickets are limited due to the size of the church so early application is recommended as they will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
