2 GAME NO. 6 AT SOUTH DAKOTA MINES CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY 2014 FOOTBALL GAME NOTES

CWU NOTES MCKINNEY MILESTONE SETS ALL-TIME CWU MARK The 87-yard pass that sophomore wide receiver Kent McKinney’s (6-1, 177, Seattle) caught, from fellow sophomore quarterback Jake Nelson (6-2, 210 , Lake Stevens), in last Saturday’s 27-20 game against Azusa Pacific, was the longest pass play in CWU football history, which dates back to 1901. It eclipsed the previous record set when Todd Peterson caught an 84-yard scoring pass from Jim Hill in 1986, matched by Nate Brookreson’s 84-yard TD grab from Brian Baugh in 2004. Hill also connected on a non-scoring 83-yard pass to Bret Collins in 1987. In addition, Jared Bronson caught an 83-yard TD from Mike Reilly in 2007. had three passes of 80 yards, or more, during his Wildcat career: an 82-yarder to John Balmer, in 1992; and two of 80-yards to Kenny Russaw, one each in 1994 and 1995.

While it was the longest pass play, it was not the longest play from scrimmage. Kenny Thompson holds that mark with a 94-yard touchdown run in 1991. The longest play overall belongs to Pat Maki, who returned an 102 yards in 1972.

HE’S THROWING While South Dakota Mines quarterback Trent McKinney is having an impressive campaign, so is CWU signal caller Nelson. He is second in the GNAC in total offense (291.4) and passing yardage (270.4). Nelson’s 1,352 passing yards tops the conference. His nine touchdowns are second in the GNAC. And he’s third in completion percentage (61.8).

THEY’RE CATCHING Senior wide receiver Greg Logan (5-10, 181, Graham-Graham-Kapowsin) has caught 37 of Nelson’s passes, tied for the 12th best total in the country, covering 532 yards, which is No. 13 in the nation. Logan is averaging 106.4 yards receiving per game, the country’s 17th top mark. McKinney (see above) leads the GNAC in yards per catch (19.9) on his 19 receptions.

LINEBACKERS LEAD THE WAY While South Dakota Mines’ defense is led by its linebacking crew, so to has been the Wildcat defense. Redshirt freshman middle linebacker Kevin Haynes (6-0, 230, Brush Prairie-Battle Ground) is second in the GNAC in tackles (44), with outside linebacker Mitch Haldane (6-0, 217, Jr., Mountlake Terrace) just one tackle behind, and third in the conference. Interestingly, Haldane has started just one game for the Wildcats this year, the season-opener at the University of Montana.

ON A RECORD PACE? Sophomore placekicker Sean McDonald (6-1,158, Sammamish-Skyline) connected on two more extra points against Azusa Pacific. He’s now perfect in 23 attempts this season. He hasn’t missed since converting on 2-of-3 in his first game last year as a true freshman. He has made 52 in a row, the fourth longest streaks in GNAC history. The longest string of made PATs is held by former Wildcat Garrett Rolsma, who connected on 99 in a row between 2007-09. McDonald’s now more than halfway to what would be a new conference record.

McDonald also connected on a pair of field goals Saturday. He’s now 4-5 on three-pointers this season, with a long of 31. His career long is 44 yards, which he hit last year, with :01 second left, during a 27-24 home win over Dixie State.

SACK-CHEZ Defensive end Tovar Sanchez (6-4, 230, Jr., Seattle-Ingraham) is currently second in the GNAC, and tied for sixth nationally, in sacks with six and tied for second in GNAC tackles for loss with eight-and-a-half. He has already surpassed the 4.5 sacks he recorded during the 2013 campaign. His12.5 for his career is tied for No. 18 in school history. With 24 career sacks, Jacob Galloway, who played from 2001-04, holds the school record. With 15 sacks total as a team, CWU is No. 9 nationally in that category.

Sanchez is wearing the No. 44 this season, It is awarded annually to the Wildcat player who is judged to exemplify the high standards of the CWU defense: dedication, toughness, discipline and tenacity. The player who wore the jersey the previous season awards it. Sanchez is the seventh Wildcat to wear the number following nose tackle Mitch Reffett (2008), linebackers Buddy Wood (2009) and Adam Bighill (2010), nose tackle Mike Reno (2011), linebacker John Koopman (2012) and safety Stan Langlow (2013).

2014 HOMECOMING NEXT WEEK Next Saturday, the Wildcats return to Tomlinson Stadium for the 2014 Homecoming game against Western Oregon. The Cats will look to avenge a 36-34 loss to the Wolves in Monmouth, Oregon, earlier this season.
