An Examination of Native Americans in Film and Rise of Native Filmmakers by Julia Boyd — 105 An Examination of Native Americans in Film and Rise of Native Filmmakers Julia Boyd Media Arts and Entertainment, Concentration: Cinema Elon University Abstract This paper explored the role of Native Americans in the Hollywood film industry and their actions to estab- lish authentic representations of their population and culture in the media. Using academic literature, film analyses, and contemporary film reviews and articles, the author created a synthesis of the history of Na- tive Americans in film. The author concluded that by becoming producers, directors, and writers of their own stories, American Indians have regained control of their images and been able to combat stereotypes and the exclusion of Native Americans in the creative process. Positive social change for minority populations can be optimized when these populations are in control of their own images in film and media. I. Introduction One can use art, music, literature, television and film to trace patterns in society. Since the invention of moving images in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, film has been a particularly powerful me- dium. Films have served as escapist fantasies, allowing audiences to enter astonishing worlds and encounter wild and colorful characters. Movies have also been used to convey truths about society that are more easily digested in a fictional format. Difficult topics such as the nature of humanity, love, and war have all been explored with film as the tool that disseminates these themes into the consciousness of the masses. With the rise of mass media and popular culture came the onset of a collective consciousness that could be shared by people all over the world, rather than people of a particular culture relying on their own ancestry and specific history. -

EDUCATION GUIDE Teri Greeves: Beadworking and Belonging “If my mother can understand what I’m doing, with a native eye, then it’s successful…” “By speaking about the history and values of my people through my work, I can help bring balance into the world my children will grow up in.” - Teri Greeves Lesson Overview In this lesson, students will study the work of bead artist Teri Greeves. After watching the Craft In America Origins episode segment featuring Greeves, students will examine how her beadworking signifies and honors her Kiowa heritage. Students will look for examples of decorated garments in their own life experience that indicate belonging to a group. Following this, students will hand embellish an item of wear with an image symbolic of a particular group. Grade Level: 8-12 Estimated Time: Six 45-minute class periods Craft In America Theme/Episode: Origins Background Information: Beadworking has been found in cultures all around the world. Early beads were made of shells, seeds, animal teeth, porcupine quills, and other objects found in nature. Kiowa artist Teri Greeves learned beadworking from the women in her family and from others on the Shoshone and Arapaho’s Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. Greeves helped her mother in a family-owned trading post where beadworking was honored as a valuable and culturally significant art. Although she has a deep respect for tradition, Greeves opts for “pictorial” work rather than the traditional floral or geometric designs. She depicts stories of the Kiowa people, but from a contemporary perspective. The artist often applies beadwork to modern-day objects such as umbrellas and sneakers. -

AMERICAN INDIANS An interactive journey back in time, our AMERICAN INDIANS course exposes students to the American Indian culture by hands-on learning and examination through the eyes of the early explorers. During the class, students will: • “Join” Rene-Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle as the first European explorers to enter East Texas. • “Meet” woodland and plains Indians and learn how they lived before the influence of European culture. • Compare and contrast the structure of a tipi and a wigwam. • Taste samples of foods eaten by many American Indian tribes. • Learn to hunt with a bow and arrow. • Hold tools crafted with bone, stone, and sinew. • Make a bead bracelet and learn how paints were developed and used. • Experience a Pow Wow and receive an individual tribal name. • Observe a native winter count and learn how to create their own. Outline of United States federal Indian law and policy The following outline is provided as an overview of and topical guide to United States federal Indian law and policy: Federal Indian policy – establishes the relationship between the United States Government and the Indian Tribes within its borders. The Constitution gives the federal government primary responsibility for dealing with tribes. Law and U.S. public policy related to Native Americans have evolved continuously since the founding of the United States. David R. YSLETA DEL SUR PUEBLO 2019 YEAR-END REPORT YSLETA DEL SUR PUEBLO 2019 YEAR-END REPORT The 2019 Year-End Report highlights eight traditional recipes, each steeped in Tigua culture and history. The featured dishes range from albondigas to verdolagas and classic tigua bread—many of which are not only served in tribal homes, but also prepared for the St. Anthony’s Feast. All of the recipes hold agricultural and historical ties to Pueblo lands and people. Tigua harvests and indigenous crops, such as corn, beans, squash, chilies, and tomatoes, determined what was prepared and consumed on the Pueblo. Tigua planting cycles followed the phases of the moon. A new field, for example, would be planted four days before the new moon on the third month (i.e., March) of the new year. All of the featured recipes were contributed and prepared by Tribal members. Thank you to all those who made this project possible. Dawisha: The Fashion Industry as a Slippery Discursive Site: Tracing the Lines of Flight Between Problem and Intervention (Under the direction of Dr. Patricia Parker) At the intersection of the glamorous façade of designer runway shows, such as those in Paris, Milan and New York, and the cheap prices at the local Walmart and Target, is the complicated, somewhat insidious “business” of the fashion industry. It is complicated because it both exploits and empowers, sometimes through the very same practices; it is insidious because its most exploitative practices are often hidden, reproduced, and sustained through a consumer culture in which we are all in some ways complicit. Since fashion’s inception, people and institutions have employed a myriad of discursive strategies to ignore and even justify their complicity in exploitative labor, environmental degradation, and neo-colonial practices. This dissertation identifies and analyzes five predicaments of fashion while locating the multiple interventions that engage various discursive spaces in the fashion industry. Ultimately, the analysis of discursive strategies by creatives, workers, organizers, and bloggers reveals the existence of agile interventions that are as nuanced as the problem, and that can engage with disciplinary power in all these complicated places. -

Scott Lesson Overview In this lesson, students will study the sculpted beadwork of artist Joyce J. Scott. Students will watch the Messages segment, featuring Scott, from the Craft In America DVD or online. The class will examine how Scott draws viewers to her work by making her pieces beautiful, with the hope that viewers will then consider the serious issues of race, class, and gender discrimination presented within the pieces. Students will consider these issues through Scott’s work. Finally, students will determine a point of view and invent a piece with an attractive surface appeal and an underlying serious topic. Craft In America Theme/Episode: Messages Grade Level: 8-12 Estimated Time: Three 45-min. class periods of research, discussion & planning, followed by four or more 45-minute studio periods Background Information: Baltimore artist Joyce J. Scott was five years old when she began learning needlework from her artistic mother, Elizabeth Talford Scott. Elizabeth Talford Scott used needlework out of necessity for mending worn clothes and linens. She turned the mending into an opportunity to make the items beautiful with decorative accents including crochet and embroidery. In addition to the knowledge of traditional needlework techniques, Joyce J. Scott learned from her mother the importance of memories and family history through story telling. -
