Ever since Metallica brandished their legendary No Life Til Leather demo in 1982, the metal scene has actively sought out new and emerging bands through this simple, but effective medium. Even though the age of digital recordings and the convenience of the internet has removed some of the romanticism in creating and ultimately unearthing a hidden gem, the classic three-song demo tape lives on in 2018. Case in point: Finlands Coronary and Canadas Traveler, who have combined their respective debut demos for a split release via Gates of Hell Records. Like any good split, this particular offering provides the best of both worlds when it comes to vintage, striking classic metal. Coronary, who formed in Tampere in 2017, when a pair of Finnish metal veterans, guitarist Aku "Herr Lederwurst" Kytölä and drummer Pate "Batvik" Vuorio, reconnected after bumping into each other at a local flea market, strike first with their German-influenced, unvarnished take on freewheeling 80s metal. This is the 1975 debut album by the British band STRIFE, a seminal influence on IRON MAIDEN and a truly superlative, underrated act. Though active throughout the '70s, they might be most properly filed into the second renaissance of hard rock/heavy metal in the late mid-to-late part of that decade. At that time, their peers such as JUDAS PRIEST, UFO, BUDGIE, and THIN LIZZY were finally flourishing with material that was more modern and aggressive than what came before. Although unfortunately failing to capture the same success as such other bands, STRIFE were more than a match in quality. In particular, their sound was as unique and forward-thinking as any of those legends. The album was released on the incredible Chrysalis Records, who put out UFO’s “Force It” that same year. It was clear the label spared no expense on their new hard-hitting and progressive act, from the awesome studio production to the Hipgnosis-designed sleeve (that art collective having designed the covers to “Force It” and PINK FLOYD that year, and having designed covers for LED ZEPPELIN among many others previously). However, the strongest aspect of the album is the music itself, which truly belongs among the best of the age. The album improved on their debut on several fronts, not least of which is the stellar production: the guitar tone is nicely crunchy, especially for its time. The technical performance of all musicians in the band – always a high point with STRIFE – had progressed in the intervening three years, as well. Songs like "Shockproof" and "Feel So Good" hit the listener with high-energy riffing and skill right out of the gate; the band delivered rock here as good as any contemporary heavy UFO, NAZARETH, or BUDGIE work. However, STRIFE retained a great deal of their progressive tendencies, as well; special mention must go to "Let Me Down," a doomy break-up song as good as any similarly themed THIN LIZZY number.
