  • Albanian Families' History and Heritage Making at the Crossroads of New
Voicing the stories of the excluded: Albanian families’ history and heritage making at the crossroads of new and old homes Eleni Vomvyla UCL Institute of Archaeology Thesis submitted for the award of Doctor in Philosophy in Cultural Heritage 2013 Declaration of originality I, Eleni Vomvyla confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. Signature 2 To the five Albanian families for opening their homes and sharing their stories with me. 3 Abstract My research explores the dialectical relationship between identity and the conceptualisation/creation of history and heritage in migration by studying a socially excluded group in Greece, that of Albanian families. Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania.

  • Return of the Kings. Institutionalization of the Royal Families in the Republics of Romania and Montenegro in the 21St Century
Marcin M. Wiszowaty* Uniwersytet Gdański RETURN OF THE KINGS. INSTITUTIONALIZATION OF THE ROYAL FAMILIES IN THE REPUBLICS OF ROMANIA AND MONTENEGRO IN THE 21ST CENTURY 1. In my latest book I took note of the phenomenon which I defined as a “re- publican paradigm in the research on the political systems of modern states”. This trend is very often encountered in the process of analyzing political systems. On one hand, it consist in omitting or marginalizing all characteristic elements of the monarchy, which do not have their republican equivalent, and on the other hand it focuses on democratic aspects of political system, ignoring its monarchic or republican character. This trend mainly results from a commonly-accepted as- sumption, that the so-called constitutional monarchy is only a stage on its way to the inevitable transformation of a political system from the absolute monarchy into the pure republic, which makes it only a transitional form. It brings about the fact that in case of monarchic states, the only subject of political system analysis is usually the monarch himself, as the last remnant of the past monarchy, whereas the other institutions of the monarchic system are ignored in the belief that they constitute insignificant relics, or even that they have already turned fully into the “republican” character.1 One of the consequences of the above-mentioned inter- pretation is a gradual replacement of a traditional categorization into “republics” or “monarchies” by classifying the states as “democratic” or “undemocratic”. As a result, the two categories will encompass both monarchies and republics, ulti- mately reducing the fundamental differences between political systems.

  • A Study on Connectivity and Accessibility Between Tram Stops and Public Facilities: a Case Study in the Historic Cities of Europe
Urban Street Design & Planning 73 A study on connectivity and accessibility between tram stops and public facilities: a case study in the historic cities of Europe Y. Kitao1 & K. Hirano2 1Kyoto Women’s University, Japan 2Kei Atelier, Yame, Fukuoka, Japan Abstract The purpose of this paper is to understand urban structures in terms of tram networks by using the examples of historic cities in Europe. We have incorporated the concept of interconnectivity and accessibility between public facilities and tram stops to examine how European cities, which have built world class public transportation systems, use the tram network in relationship to their public facilities. We selected western European tram-type cities which have a bus system, but no subway system, and we focused on 24 historic cities with populations from 100,000 to 200,000, which is the optimum size for a large-scale community. In order to analyze the relationship, we mapped the ‘pedestrian accessible area’ from any tram station in the city, and analyzed how many public facilities and pedestrian streets were in this area. As a result, we were able to compare the urban space structures of these cities in terms of the accessibility and connectivity between their tram stops and their public facilities. Thus we could understand the features which determined the relationship between urban space and urban facilities. This enabled us to evaluate which of our target cities was the most pedestrian orientated city. Finally, we were able to define five categories of tram-type cities. These findings have provided us with a means to recognize the urban space structure of a city, which will help us to improve city planning in Japan.

E R I T A G ··E.· Journa{ of tfze frencft-Caruufian 1-ftritage Society of Micftigan . ' Vol. 28 #2 Apr. 2007 Correction of Catherine Baillon's Grimaldi Ancestry John P. DuLong, FCHSM member ([email protected]) Many French Canadians descend from the noble lady Catherine Baillon and through her they have ancestors far removed from the cold shores of the St. Lawrence. Among her medieval Franco-Italian ancestors who once basked in the warmth of the Mediterranean are the Grimaldis. In the Table d'ascendance de Catherine Bail/on (12 generations) two Grimaldi descents for Catherine Baillon are presented. 1 The first goes through the Grimaldi of Beuil family and the second is through the Grimaldi of Antibes family. 2 While the former stands intact, the latter is in need of correction. In the ninth generation of Catherine Baillon's ancestry she descends from Rainier Lascaris, count of Vintimille and co-seigneur of La Briga and Limone. He was the son of Ludovic (or Louis) Lascaris, count ofVintimille, and Tiburge Grimaldi de Beuil. Rainier was married around 1400-1403 to Madeleine Grimaldi, the daughter of Luc Grimaldi and Yolande Grimaldi, whose parents, and thus her relationship to Luc, are unknown. Luc was the brother of Marc Grimaldi, with whom he shared the seigneuries of Antibes, Cagnes, and Menton. 3 It is well established that Luc and Marc were the sons of Antoine Grimaldi who was married to Catherine Doria. 4 The issue is who are the parents of Antoine Grimaldi? In the Table d'ascendance de Catherine Bail/on (12 generations) the answer to this question is that Antoine Grimaldi was the son of Rainier I Grimaldi, the founder of the family that eventually became the princes of Monaco.
