2 The end of term has almost arrived but the school is still a very busy place for students and staff. In the last two weeks a large number of trips and events have been organised, which really enrich the learning experience of the young people involved. This newsletter serves to celebrate examples of the variety of activities that our students have had the opportunity to be involved in and give an indication of the richness of the provision at Madeley School. I would like to thank the local community and all parents, staff, our Trust and Governors for their unwavering support following the terrible accident close to the school involving our Year 7 student. We continue to wish him a full recovery and again send our thoughts to his family at this difficult time. Activity day on the last Thursday of term has now been planned and students are engaged in a whole host of rewarding activities, both offsite and classroom based, with the House Sports Day finishing off the year in style. As is the case every year we have a number of staff leaving us for pastures new and some retiring. The two colleagues who are retiring or (semi-retiring!) have given many years of service to our school and will be known by a lot of you in our school community – you may well have been taught and supported by them! Ms Vorwerg is retiring from her position as Assistant Principal and Drama teacher after 28 years at the school, it will not be just those of us in the Senior Team that will miss her enthusiasm, knowledge, compassion and skill. Ms. Vorwerg is, as the students would say, “a legend”, having been at the school since 1989. In that time, she has had a huge impact on the life chances of young people, led at least 12 wonderful “west end style” school shows and served for a number of years as a school Governor. She has been a key member of our school community and we are all extremely grateful for what she has done over her wonderful career at Madeley. Mrs Bateman also has legendary status as she has supported generations of local children since the year 2000. We also say goodbye to staff who moving on to a variety of new and exciting professional challenges. Mrs Tetley has been the school SENDCO for the last 2 years having been a dedicated member of the English team since 2000. She has been a true advocate for all students who have faced barriers to their learning and her dedication to providing those young people with the necessary support will, for them, last a life time. Other teachers that are moving on with our best wishes and gratitude are Mr Hughes (Humanities), Mrs Bell (MFL) and Mrs Hinton (Technology), along with Mr Boote from ICT support. We are also grateful to Mrs Curtis who has recently provided teaching support in Science. As these colleagues leave us we are joined by a number of new teachers and operational staff, all of whom, I am sure will help make the school an even better place to work and learn. Mrs Boustead joins us as our SENDCO and teacher of Humanities having worked in a variety of mainstream and specialist provision across the county. Mr Jenkins joins us as an assistant SENDCO and specialist teacher in Humanities and Maths intervention. Mrs Farrington is joining as a teacher of English with a wealth of experience and Mrs Andrew is starting her teaching career with us and will be teaching Drama and Performing Arts. We are very much looking forward to working with all our new colleagues and with all of the new developments that are outlined in this edition, the future certainly looks bright for all at our school. A highlight of the last few weeks has been the arrival of our new Year 7 students and our inaugural Y9 Graduation. Two days of induction activities for our new students plus a parents’ forum really gave these young people a chance to learn about their new school and feel prepared, and excited about, starting in September. We know it is crucially important to get this transition right and we appreciate the support of parents and our primary partner schools in helping make this work so well. We wish our Y9 students well as they embark upon their GCSE courses and look forward to celebrating results with our Y11 students in August.

It has been a great end to the term and I think we can look forward to a great year ahead. I hope you and your family have a fantastic summer break and I look forward to working with you again next term. Happy holidays! L Nixon

3 At Madeley School we are constantly looking at ways of improving our communication with parents/carers. There are a number of key developments that we are working on to improve the student/parent experience at Madeley. These are summarised below. We are keen to for you to share your ideas and suggestions on how we can continue our journey to ‘outstanding’.

Behaviour Policy - We are currently reviewing our behaviour policy with the intention to update it to make it more efficient and to raise standards so that we can provide the best learning environment to ‘inspire excellence’. To raise these standards and to enhance efficiency of the behaviour and reward systems it is important to know what you think of the current system of behaviour and what you feel behaviour is like in and around Madeley School. We will also be asking the students for their views too, through a separate survey and small working groups. To support the review of the behaviour policy we would be grateful if you would complete the survey about behaviour here at Madeley School. If you wish to respond in writing too with your views and ideas this would also be warmly welcomed. If you wish to provide this additional information can you please email it to Mr Hope ([email protected]). The survey link is below. http://www.qdpservices.com/online/OLI_Questionnaire.asp?SID=10001-1223401-00000

Show My Homework - Following a successful trial of the online programme “Show My Homework” all homework will now be set using this tool. This is an excellent programme which aids students in their work as teachers can provide clear instructions, supply worksheets on screen for easy reference and completion, give a direct line to teachers for support and a range of quizzes set teachers to assess knowledge. Additionally, parents and carers will all be issued with a log in so that you can see what homework your child has been set and help them with this. An App is also available so that students can check their homework planner at any time. Homework Club will still be open each day to help students with their work and give access to tasks online.

As a consequence of the above, we are phasing out the Homework Planner in its current form. Students will be provided with a blazer pocket sized “Jot Book” as an additional memory aid. This can still be used as a communication tool with Staff and Form Tutors. All policies and permission forms will be sent out separately or published on the school website.

Building Developments - Over the summer the school will have several build projects completed:

 New layout for the visitor reception to include a waiting area and separate meeting room  Separate student entrance and student services reception  Secure line fencing  Ground floor cosmetic refresh  Creating an extended intervention Hub for Mathematics  Creation of a School Library  Canteen refresh / decoration and improved seating  Redesigned /refurbished Student Support room

Exploratory work will be undertaken to assess conditions in the school toilets with some minor interim work before investment is secured for a full refit.

New Pastoral Team - We have a new dedicated pastoral team in place for the new academic year:  Head of Year 7 - Miss Goodhead  Head of Year 8 - Mr Walker  Head of Year 9 & Key Stage 3 Co-ordinator - Mrs Snape  Head of Year 10 - Miss Holmes  Head of Year 11 & Key Stage 4 Co-ordinator - Mr Green

New Exercise Books - We are moving towards bespoke Madeley School exercise books to develop pride in the presentation of work, helpful literacy tips, clear spaces to track progress and celebrate successes and spaces to respond to teacher feedback.

4 Library - In September 2017 we aim to re-open a Library space to continue to foster a love of reading. This will also build on the excellent work which we have started this year through Accelerated Reader and we aim for many more word millionaires in the next term. We would welcome suggestions from students and parents about “good reads” as we look to build up this facility once more.

Key Stage 3 Graduation Ceremony - The Key Stage 3 graduation event now takes place at the end of Year 9. This is a celebratory event and gives a chance for all parents to share in the success of their children. Students will be dressed in gowns and hats to celebrate on their special day!

Whole School Assessment - The school is continuing to develop its assessment system following national changes to GCSEs. Assessment at Madeley School is based on GCSE criteria (skills and/or content) for all year groups. In all year groups, this is reported with a GCSE band (1-9) followed by a + (very secure), = (secure) or - (developing). A working towards (W) grade is awarded as a grade before the 1-9 scale. More details can be found on the parents guide to assessment on the school website.

School Website - We are currently developing a new look website. Departments are developing the subject section of the website to provide more useful information and support for you and your child. We will also be adding a new careers and work related learning section. If you wish to provide any ideas/suggestions for improving the website please email Mr King ([email protected]).

Careers Information, Advice and Guidance/Work Related Learning - From September we will be using a new Careers Information and Guidance (CIAG provider) called Changing Education for work experience placements and CIAG interviews. Work experience is being reintroduced with Year 10 (current Year 9). This will take place at the end of Year 10. There will be a lead up programme prior to the placement to help students develop the key employability skills required to be successful at their chosen workplace. Year 7, 8 and 9 Personal Development lessons will include a comprehensive CIAG/work related learning unit to support students with their chosen career paths.

We are currently developing a number of CIAG/enterprise days for Years 10 and 11 (current Years 9 and 10). The website will include an updated careers section to support students and parents with career choices.

Electronic Parent Evening Booking System - We are currently exploring the use of an electronic parent evening booking system to replace the paper based one that we have currently. The system will allow you to make appointments with teachers quickly and efficiently.

Parental Engagement - We have invested in the Xpressions App to improve our home / school communication about your child. The App is free for you to download and use and will also be free for the school to send information to you. The big roll out will come in September but if you want to find out more and to get started more information is available at http://parents.groupcall.com/ follow the set up menu to get the app and get signed up.

Curriculum - We constantly review our curriculum model and the subjects offered to our students to inspire excellence, provide support for those who need it whilst always striving for positive outcomes for all our students. For the coming year we are re-naming our bands. The upper band in each year group will be band x and the lower band will be y. Your child will be placed in bands and classes based on their abilities and always in consultation with subject staff.

IE Time - This is a new 30 minute slot created at the end of the day to Inspire Excellence in our students. Students in Key Stage 3 will choose from a range of clubs, activities and exciting opportunities that aren't necessarily part of the more formal, structured curriculum but will have the capacity to broaden horizons and encourage them to "get involved" with school life in a broader sense.

The Eco-Council at Madeley School are very proud to have received the Eco-Schools Bronze Award for 2016-17. Throughout the year with the help of Mr Salmon the Eco-council have met to complete an Environmental Review of Madeley School, in order to determine how sustainable we are in our approach to such things as recycling, litter management, electricity consumption and in our awareness of local and global issues. In conjunction with Newcastle Borough Council, we have also recently received a certificate in recognition of our completion of three litter picks around the village of Madeley during the course of the year. On one of our litter picks we were also delighted to be accompanied by the Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Councillor Simon White, who helped in the clean-up operation around the village.

We would like to say a big thank you to Keith from Elmside Nurseries for donating a lovely selection of bedding plants which have helped us to enhance our school environment, we are very grateful.

7 Madeley Parliament held a meeting on 5th July 2017 and below is a summary of the items discussed. The meeting began with the whole of Madeley Parliament expressing their best wishes for our Year 7 student’s recovery.

Kitchen / Canteen was discussed and the following points were raised.  students pushing in the queue  students avoiding the queue by sneaking in the back door  Parliament expressed a wish for a greater variety of vegetarian options.

Future of Madeley Parliament was discussed and the following points were raised and voted upon.  The House of Lords is to be abolished and no permanent MPs allowed.  The current Cabinet Members should stay on in their roles up until the end of the first term of the next academic year to ensure continuity.  All current MPs who do not have cabinet responsibilities will stand down at the end of this term.  Fresh elections should be held at the beginning of the next academic year.  In previous years students have only been allowed to be an MP for one year. However, it was felt that MPs should be able to stand for re-election if they have been doing a good job.

Reports from Ministers: Minister for Health A proposition was put forward that the school should increase the amount of First Aid training given to students in light of recent incidents. This was passed with unanimous support and the Minister responsible will be submitting the proposal to SLT before the end of the year.

Minister for Environment After consultation with students across the school and recent surveys it was felt that issues with the girls toilets needed to be discussed. Issues raised included graffiti, broken locks, etc. and it was decided that more research needed to be done on this issue before any votes or recommendations could be made.

Head Boy and Head Girl Update: Guy and Val introduced themselves to Parliament.

Celebrating Success:  Mr Nixon: Response to the Year 7 student Incident  Mr Walker: Raising Money to support our Year 7 family  Mrs Kretschmer: College Taster Days

Improvements needed / wanted.  Issues with bus drivers smoking at the school gate.  Can we get rid of toilet passes?  Can we have a representative of the Shaw Education Trust at our next meeting so we can ask  them questions?  Can we have a zebra crossing or a lollipop person outside of the school?  Can we have the St John ambulance qualifications?

Some local Madeley residents have set up a petition calling for speed calming measures to be introduced in Madeley. If you would like to sign the petition or find out further information please use the link below.

Year 11 Ball The Year 11 Ball took place on Friday 30th June and everyone enjoyed a fabulous final farewell at Tern Hill Hall. Students looked absolutely fantastic and arrived for the evening in a variety of amazing vehicles.

An Oscar style awards evening took place and memories were shared. There was even a chocolate fountain and a dress up photo booth to keep everyone amused. A fantastic evening was had by all.

Year 11 GCSE Examinations Year 11 students started their GCSE examinations on Monday 15th May, both staff and students did a lot of preparation work and revision lessons ready for the start of the exams. The students behaviour was impeccable, they worked hard throughout the exam series, always being on time, well prepared and organised.

We had a few unusual languages this year with students taking GCSE’s in Hebrew, Italian, Latin and Russian. We wish the class of 2017 all the very best for results day on Thursday 24th August and we wish them well as they move on to the next stage in their education.

9 The KS3 Growth Mindset Graduation was a splendid event. Year 9 students (and some form tutors!) were dressed in their hats and gowns and walked down the red carpet surrounded by parents as they entered the hall. Liz Barnes, the Vice Chancellor from University delivered the inspirational key note speech, and students and parents were also address by Mr Nixon and Mr Ostrowski about the growth mindset theme.

All students received their certificates, and students who met all of the criteria received a special graduation award. Fantastic musical performances by Victoria, Marilyn and Eve capped off a superb event. Many congratulations to all of the Year 9 students.

Well done to the Young Enterprise team of 2017 who won North Staffordshire Young Enterprise Competition Award 2017 and The Best Company Report award 2017.

Their enterprising idea was to build storage boxes out of recycled pallets. They extended this to include chalkboards and garden planters.

Thanks also to Gill Sherwin our business mentor who owns Best of British Beers in Silverdale who offered invaluable advice to help them build their successful business.

10 On Monday 3rd July year 6 students came to Madeley High school to participate in two transition days before their official start in September. Students arrived in their array of primary uniforms and were eager to begin their first day. Congregating in the hall, Mr Nixon led the welcome before students were assigned to their forms getting to know their form teacher. From there, they got to spend some time getting to know one another as well as taking a tour around the school. At break time, students were able to enjoy some snacks from the dining hall before having a well-deserved break in preparation for the rest of the morning’s activities. At lunch time, students got to know the peer mentors and spent time making new friends whilst enjoying their lunch. From there it was over to the prefect team who led a fun filled afternoon of form time games and activities which were enjoyed by all.

Day two saw students getting involved in more subject time and it was a good opportunity for teachers to meet the year 6 students and for the students to meet some more teachers. They enjoyed sessions from: Drama, Music, Art and Food Technology to Computing, English, Maths and Science. In the afternoon, it was time for some sport and all of the cohort took part in their choice of activity, either: dodgeball, zone ball or football. Well done to our overall winners 7HL who led their form to victory in the afternoon’s activities. Overall, it was a very successful two days, students got to know; teachers, form tutors and other students and the feedback was very positive. We hope that they now feel more comfortable and excited ready to join us in September!

Intake evening This was a very informative evening in which new parents were able to attend the school to find out some more information in preparation for their child’s new start in September. It was led by a welcome from Mr Nixon and then an introduction to the year 7 team from the Head of Year. Parents then got the chance to see their child’s form room and form teacher and to ask any questions about the school. There was also an opportunity to purchase the new school uniform which was on display throughout the evening as well as signing up to the new parent App Xpressions. Parents left well informed and positive for their child’s new start in September.

This year has seen the launch of the Accelerated Reader programme to year 7 and 8 students, an online programme which aims to improve reading comprehension. Students select books on their reading level, read independently, and take an independent comprehension test on the computer. Over the course of the year, there have been many competitions relating to Accelerated Reader, from the form bunting competition which encouraged all members of the form to get involved in creating a bunting design to promote Accelerated Reader. 8CL and 7SW won this competition and got to enjoy a breakfast with Miss Goodhead. The next competition was the bingo challenge where students had to read a wide variety of different texts before crossing off the criteria on the bingo card. Well done to Rose Mellor 8JB for winning and she was rewarded with a giant Easter egg. The word challenge was the third competition to be introduced, students working in form teams who read the most amount of words during the set time frame were awarded with a film afternoon with drinks and popcorn. Well done to 7SW and 8PD who won the challenge! Finally, the last competition of the year was the Millionaires’ Garden Party open to Millionaires only so the race was on to get as many millionaires as possible! Well done to everyone who qualified and who enjoyed the garden party reward on Tuesday 11th July.

11 On 11th May Year 10 music students were fortunate enough to take a trip down memory lane and visit the Beatles Story museum in Liverpool. The students got a real insight in to the history of the Beatles and the band's musical journey. This now forms part of the new AQA GCSE music course, where students have to study three pieces of music from the album 'Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band'. The students had a fantastic day out.

There have been some excellent music examination successes from students this term, congratulations to them all. 12 AT MADELEY HIGH SCHOOL

FAME! The tune echoes onwards for so many grown-ups of a certain vintage! Musical Theatre International have prepared a fantastic Junior version, which has been a perfect play for us this year.

Students received their libretto and studied hard for auditions. The wealth of talent amongst Madeley students continues to amaze Mr Smith, Miss Holmes and myself, who undertook the auditions. After many hours of 'Hard Work', just as the song says, students look forward to 'Tomorrow' in a blaze of optimism.

Students in this production range across all abilities and experience and give something much more to school than a good performance; a sense of belonging and family are so precious in these special experiences.

At writing, we have two more performances to play. 'FAME! I'm gonna live forever...'. I hope the memories of this great production live on in the hearts of the performers .., forever! Thank you for everyone's hard work to produce this performance, especially staff and students. Ms Vorwerg

13 On Friday 16th June our Year 10 team 'Made in Madeley' went to Staffordshire University to take part in the KMF Young Engineer of the Year. This year's project involved making and programming a LEGO robot. Although things had gone well in training when it came to the competitive matches it didn't go quite as well. Students conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and it was a pleasure to be with them. We are already looking forward to next year.

On 21st June Mr Mayers and Mr Hardy accompanied students in Years 5 and 6 from Woore Primary School to the 11th Staffordshire Schools Greenpower Goblin Car event at Seighford. We were delighted to find that Woore won the Slalem and students received a trophy and individual medals.

Also on 21st June Mr Whalley and our Young Engineers in Years 7 and 8 were at JCB taking part in the 'JCB Loadall Challenge'. Students were successful in winning the award for best and most innovative design!

Members of the Rotary Club visited the department to judge their annual 'Young Innovator' Competition. A number of Year 11 projects were displayed showing a wide range of high quality products. The winning entry was an innovative table designed by Chloe Fox Robertson.

Year 10 Food Technology students have undertaken their first attempt at a three hour food practical where they had to produce three dishes within three hours. The theme was Dishes from a Cultural Area. What can’t be seen in the pictures is that many of the students had to fillet fish and dissect a chicken in order to produce the meat for their dishes. They have shown excellent skill levels and we are very proud of them all.

Year 10 students enjoyed a trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park on 15th May. Students were able to engage with the sculptures and they were even allowed to climb on some of them. They also had fun avoiding all the sheep all daylong! Students have been studying the work of the sculptor Tony Cragg and have produced a personal response in clay.

14 A group of Y8 students visited Treak Cliff Cavern to look at the limestone formations and underground caverns, caves and mines along with features such as stalactites and stalagmites.

The visit was a reward for their performance in the unit about Limestone in the UK and included an educational tour of the mines and caverns containing Blue John. An excellent time was had by all. Review by Mr Walker

Geography Fieldwork 2017 – Llandudno, North Wales. At the end of June, our Year 10 GCSE Geography students travelled along the North Wales coastline in order to carry out their Geography fieldwork in Llandudno. On the journey, our students were able to take the opportunity to witness, at first hand, many of the coastal management strategies that they had been taught about in the classroom: groynes, rock armour, accropodes, fishtail groynes, and wave-return walls. On arrival the Year 10s set about collecting both QUANTITATIVE and QUALITATIVE data in order to fulfil the GCSE coursework requirements, in preparation for their final examinations next summer. By working really hard and behaving impeccably, all students completed both their Physical and Human Geography fieldwork by the end of the day.

In the morning, for our Physical Geography study, we measured beach slope angles along several transects of the West Shore beach (using ranging poles and clinometers) and collected and measured sediment samples (using calipers, sediment sieves and measuring tapes). This data was collected in order to test the hypothesis that ‘pebble beaches have a steeper gradient than sand beaches’. In the afternoon, our focus switched to Human Geography, with a specific focus on TOURISM and Land-use. Our students had to complete a land-use map of the town Llandudno, classifying properties and buildings to work out their FUNCTION: either Tourist services, Hotels/Guest Houses/ none-tourist shops & services or residential. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that ‘Tourist services in Llandudno change with distance from the beach’ and more specifically, to find out if Llandudno fits into the ‘TOURIST LAND-USE MODEL’, which is the typical land-use pattern for tourist resorts in Britain. Year 10 Geographers are now in the process of collating the data, graphically presenting it, interpreting their findings and evaluating strengths and weaknesses of their primary data collection methods.

A fantastic day was enjoyed by all! Thanks to Mr Walker from the Humanities Department and to Mrs Lee for supporting on the field trip. Madeley School can once again be proud of its Geography students who represented us on the day. They were well behaved, sensible, safety-aware, hard-working and committed to their studies. Well done, everyone! Review by Dr Curtis, Subject Leader for Geography. 15 This year has gone far too quickly yet again and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported our events and / or provided support in any other way, either through; time, contacts or donations. All contributions are very welcome and much appreciated.

We have undertaken some new fundraising events this academic year, one of which saw us host our first Fashion Show in October (which was a great success) and our Car Boot sale a couple of months ago, the footfall for which was not great but many thanks to those of you who did join us on that glorious Sunday morning. Contributions to the school this year have included; the purchase of Lego for which we received a very special thank you from the children, a thank you made entirely out of lego, thank you to Mrs Tye for supporting the students with the Lego Club.

We helped to purchase gardening materials and equipment for the gardening club, Mrs Holdcroft is doing a great job, the pots and the beds around school are looking lovely and we are hopeful for some vegetables later in the year.

The FOM also submitted a bid to the parish council for a netball kit to enable them to compete on an equal footing with other teams, most of whom already had a specific netball kit. FOM made up the difference from the grant. Miss Holmes and members from the team attended a meeting of the parish council to thank them for the donation. A sizeable financial donation was also provided to assist Year 11s to manage exam stress and anxiety. We are currently and will continue to support the Accelerated Reader programme run by Miss Goodhead in the English department. We are arranging a bag pack at a local supermarket in early September, to help raise funds for the Accelerated Reader programme, the focus being on creating an inviting environment for the students to read in. If you and / or your little 'book worms' are able to help in any way, please get in touch. A letter has gone out seeking volunteers to assist on the day. Be inspired!

Our regular meetings will continue in September we usually meet once per half term, if possible, as we are well aware how busy everyone is. We remain keen for as many parents as possible to come along and get involved. This could be through the generation of new ideas for fund raising, by sharing contacts you may know who could help us or simply by contacting us to find out if you work for a business which could support us through matched funding. There really is no cost involved for you and it is ‘money for nothing’. Please get in touch so that we can tell you more.

We will be hosting another Fashion Show in early November so please, watch out for reminders on the school website or by following our Facebook page, Friends of Madeley. This was a great afternoon, many great bargains were had and it was a hugely successful fundraiser. Make sure you get your tickets early and do your best to promote the event with friends. You could start or finish your Christmas shopping. We wish everyone a fabulous summer and look forward to welcoming you to our first meeting of the new school year, in September. Dates will be advertised on the website or FoM facebook page. Many thanks again for your continued support. Friends of Madeley Follow The Friends of Madeley on Facebook! Keep up to date with all our fundraising events and news or alternatively you can email us at [email protected]

16 On Friday 23rd June there were two fund raising events to raise funds for the Air Ambulance and the Birmingham Children's Hospital in appreciation of the care provided for our Year 7 student after his terrible accident.

The popular cake sale saw an enormous amount of cakes bought and eaten during the morning break time session.

In the afternoon, around half the school (students and staff) participated in a fun run/walk around the field for sponsorship towards the fund. There were several runners/walkers in fancy dress and the atmosphere created and support for our Year 7 family was overwhelming. Well done, everyone!

The events raised over £600.

17 Twenty eight years ago, I first walked into Madeley High School on a mission to teach Dance - little did I know this would be a life's work! Madeley has been a source of worry, pleasure, fun, joy, tears and fulfilment for all this time. I have had the privilege of working with so many great colleagues and wonderful children, it would be wrong to single individuals out but, of course, there are moments and people I will never forget! Where to begin... the occasional tustle between friends, the sadness of loss of colleagues and students, the satisfaction of success and the pleasure of performances. Too many memories to share in this space but ask me if I remember . . . and I expect I will. The joy of performances has made its mark with many students and Ms Vorwerg will live on in my heart as the high points of my time here. It is with real sadness that I Assistant Principal say farewell and hope that I can stay in touch with the family that is Madeley School. Thank you for the happy times and wonderful memories and good luck!

I joined the Air Cadets on the 9th September 2015; I joined because I want to be an RAF Nurse as I want to save people’s lives. I have had plenty of life skills i.e. shooting, flying, map reading, DofE and many more to come. On Friday the 7th I had a once in a lifetime experience to go flying in a Grob Tutor I had a wonderful time and I did it with two of my best friends. Before I got to go up in the skies I had to do a safety lesson so I knew how to use the parachute and what to do if something happened. When I got into the plane we did the safety lesson refresh on the plane and then got ready to take off, I took off on grass when I got up into the skies I got to do a loop the loop and a barrel roll on my own and turning left and right and how to get level with the horizon. I did it at RAF Cosford with an amazing pilot who taught me all the stuff that I needed to know to do acrobatics, we flew near RAF Shawbury and had to swap frequencies. The views were spectacular and I even got to take a selfie. We then landed on grass. As well as flying I got to go on camps like STEM Quest it was really good and I have loads of photos and I got to ride an 8 man bike which was interesting. Review by C. Weymouth

18 Newcastle College: Schools Honours Programme Introduction Day On Tuesday 25th April L Pountain, V Garro, J Scott, T Le Toquin & I were invited on a taster day at Newcastle- under-Lyme College as part of a wider Oxford University trip. When we arrived at the college we had an introductory talk about the right mind set for approaching questions, then we went on over the Science labs to take part in two Science taster sessions. The first one was about Physics and the solar system; the second was a practical activity in Chemistry on coloured compounds. Both were really interesting, especially the Chemistry and they really gave a flavour of what Science would be like at NULC. After a delicious lunch we had talks on Higher Education and the different opportunities it provides and offers, such as the Honours Programme. Included in these talks was a section about Russell Group Universities and it was really interesting to find out what different options we have in the future of where to study. Overall, it was a really good day and left us really looking forward to the visit to Oxford University. Review by E McMillan Y10

Year 10’s visit to Oxford Our visit to Somerville College in Oxford took place on Thursday 18th May. We set off at 7am by coach and made our way to Oxford. When we arrived at the college we received a talk about Oxbridge and other Russell Group Universities. We then had a taster session in Linguistics and enjoyed lunch in the hall. This was followed by a tour of the college. Later we had a walk around Oxford and visited the museum which contained dinosaur skeletons and much more. Finally we all boarded the coach for home. It was a great experience and gave us all a brilliant taste of what it is like as a student at Oxford! Review by L Pountain Y10

Dyslexia Friendly Status Success

On Tuesday 4th July, an external assessor from Entrust visited Madeley for the re -verification of our Dyslexia Friendly Full status. After a learning walk and look- ing at evidence and data we were awarded this status for the next three years.

This status highlights the inclusive support given to all students with dyslexia and other additional needs at Madeley; something that as a school we are incredibly proud of.

19 We have had another really successful expedition season for the Duke of Edinburgh! With nearly 50 students across Year 9 and 10 involved in either their Bronze or Silver Award.

The 18 silver students completed their qualifying expedition at the beginning of July near Bakewell in the Peak District, it was incredibly tough but, despite this, coupled with various injuries along the way, they all made it! Well done!

The 31 Bronze students have still got their qualifying expedition to complete in September, but they have been tirelessly working to log and complete their hours for all sections as well as completing their practice expedition in the local area.

We look forward to seeing all of the video presentations at the Presentation evening! And of course massive thanks go to all of the staff who work with all of the students to help them achieve the award, both in school and on expedition. Just some to name a few Mrs Lee, Mr Royall, Mr Walker, Miss Slight, Mrs Pain & Miss Austin.

Gold Presentations at Buckingham Palace

Due to the outstanding completion rates for the award last year at Madeley, we were lucky enough as a school to receive a Royal invitation to Buckingham Palace to attend some of this year’s prestigious Gold Award Presentations.

Miss Holmes travelled down to London and attended the event, she said “it was amazing to experience one of the presentation ceremonies at such a fantastic venue! It was also incredibly inspiring to meet some of the young people from across Staffordshire who have spent a great deal of time completing their Gold Award.”

Let’s hope that some of our Bronze and Silver award holders at Madeley go on to complete their Gold and get their very own Royal invite!

U14 - County Cup Despite their best efforts the u14 boys suffered a 9 wicket defeat in the opening round of the County Cup against Painsley High School. Painsley reached their target of 81 with an over to spare. Squad: Oliver Wilde, Jack Boulton, Oliver Day, Kuviraj Sandhu, Hari Satchithananda, William Denfhy, Harry Woodward, William Birkin, Louis Coggins, Matthew Waller

U15 - County Cup The u15s had a fantastic run in this year’s U15b competition. Victories against Painsley High School, Newcastle -under-Lyme School and Netherstowe School saw the boys reach the final of the competition at Penkridge CC.

In the final the boys unfortunately fell just short in their quest for glory.

A strong Tettenhall College side playing their 18th game of the summer and fielding 5 county age group players made 152-4 from their 20 overs. Jake Vousden was the pick of the Madeley attack, taking 1 for 12 from his 4 overs.

In reply Madeley closed their innings on 132-3. After an excellent opening partnership of 70, which only ended with the run out of Oliver Wilde (31), the boys looked on course to pull off a famous victory. However, Tettenhall's highly rated young leg spinner put the brakes on the chase and when Toby Degg departed for an outstanding 56, the required rate of 10 an over for the last 4 overs proved too big a challenge.

Nevertheless making the final alone was an immense achievement and the boys should be hugely proud of their performances. Squad : Toby Degg, Matthew Ball, Christian Gething, Alex Dobson, Jake Vousden, Oliver Wilde, Jack Boulton, Oliver Day, Louis Coggins, Harry Taylor, Matthew Waller, Hari Satchithananda, Cameron Morris.

U15 Newcastle Schools Festival Due to college taster days a squad of Y7, 8 & 9 students took part in the inaugural Newcastle Schools Cricket festival. The team fell agonisingly short of making the final on net run rate. After an opening game defeat against an experienced Sir Thomas Boughey team, Madeley produced a stunning performance to beat Clayton by 7 wickets, when they knocked off 70 runs with 2 overs remaining. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough to see the team qualify for the final. Squad : Oliver Wilde, Jack Boulton, Cameron Morris, Kuviraj Sandhu, Hari Satchithananda, Dominique Harrison, Louis Coggins, Harry Taylor.

Leadership Opportunities This term has seen 33 Madeley High School students support Primary School Tri-Golf and Kwik Cricket competitions. Students undertook training sessions in each activity before officiating the Newcastle Schools Competitions as well as the County Finals at Keele University.

The feedback received from Primary School members of staff and Carl Inskip (Newcastle Schools Games Organiser) was outstanding. The leaders were both role models to the younger students and excellent ambassadors for Madeley.

21 This term:  Seventy Key Stage 2 pupils from 10 primary schools continue to attend Maths workshops at Madeley  Y8 pupils entered the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge  Y11 Maths Clinic—students attended numerous revision classes  All Key Stage 3 pupils are improving their numeracy skills by working through the Numeracy Ninja booklets.  Y10 girls visited a Maths Conference at Keele University  Teachers from a range of secondary schools visited Madeley to attend a Secondary Mathematics Mastery course.

All of the Year 9's had such an amazing time on the Alton Towers science trip visit! Not only did we get to explore that park but also learn about the rides too! Learning about the rides was really interesting and fun because if you answered a question correctly you got a free fast track pass! I used to have a fear of rides before my visit however I enjoyed myself so much that I did all the big six and really enjoyed myself. The trip was really fun and I am sure all of the Year 9's had a great time! Thanks to Miss Jones who won the trip which was funded by travel company COGO, our school name was pulled out of a hat from over 300 other schools - lucky us! Review by Z Bailey Y9

22 Badminton The KS4 girls’ team of Hattie Bourne, India Toon, Bridie Harding and Alisha Campbell crowned a fantastic year by winning the inaugural North Staffs Schools Badminton Competition. After topping their qualifying group, the girls made it a clean sweep of victories on finals night at Clayton to take the title. Many congratulations on an outstanding season.

Athletics The athletics season got underway in the summer term with the Senior District Athletics meet at Northwood Stadium. There were some excellent performances throughout the day from Madeley’s athletes. Congratulations to Kara Magee for finishing 3rd in the 200m, Scarlett Cotton for finishing 1st in the Hurdles and 2nd in the 1500m and Alisha Campbell for finishing 2nd in the 1500m and 3rd in the 800m. They went on to represent the Newcastle schools in the County Athletics event.

On 15th July the Junior Athletics competition took place at Northwood Stadium. Thirty students represented Madeley, 8 of them winning medals. They were then selected to compete at the County Athletics competition, a fantastic achievement. Special congratulations to Harry Woodward for finishing 3rd in the 100m, Jack Allman for finishing 3rd in the Long Jump, Alfie Farr for finishing 3rd in the Triple Jump, Owen Johnson for finishing 1st in the High jump, Kiera Owen for finishing 1st in the 200m, Rebecca Gaskell for finishing 2nd in the 1500m and 3rd in the Long Jump, Iona Young for finishing 3rd in the 1500m and Hannah Molyneux for finishing 3rd in the High Jump.

Cheerleading Due to popular demand, Madeley has its first very own Cheer- leading after school club! The sessions have been attended by a core group of around 15 girls, who have all worked incredibly hard, learning new techniques and putting routines together. We have also been lucky enough to book in an external coach to come in to do some taster sessions with the girls, these have been so successful that we are going to make this a more permanent thing, with the coach running sessions in September on a regular basis.

Rounders

Both the Year 8 and 9 Girls Rounders team have had a great run in the District competition over the summer term. The Year 8s unfortunately didn’t make it through to the semi-finals, after some games against some tough competition. However the Year 9 team made it all the way to the final after some gutsy performances! They played Newcastle-Under-Lyme School, the two teams couldn’t be separated, level on rounders score by the end of the game. The decision came down to the number of outs per team, Newcastle had 1 and unfortunately Madeley had 2. Don’t worry girls we’ll get them next year!

23 This finish line is in sight for this year’s competition… with Sports day still to come there are plenty of points up for grabs, but it’s looking like a two horse race unless Fire, Water or Earth can conjure up some magic!

1st - Air 172pts 2nd - Space 160pts 3rd - Fire 135pts 4th - Water & Earth 172pts
