T Initially, the Ara project began as a flood control channel which was originally designed to discharge water from the Gulpo River into the West Sea in 1992 so as to prevent habitual flooding of the Gyeyang-gu and Bucheon areas of Incheon, and Gimpo. To overcome the shortcomings of seasonal operation during the monsoon season only and to utilize land efficiently, a project to create a watercourse connecting the West Sea and the Han River was launched by conjoining the flood control channel of the Gulpo River and a 3.8km section of the Han River. In fact, the dream of the Gyeongin Ara Waterway was conceived a long time ago. The history of the Ara Waterway started some 800 years ago when King Gojong of the Koryo Dynasty was in power. Back then, the Jowoon Waterway was used to transport tax revenue collected from local areas to the central government from Yeomha, between Gimpo and Ganghwa Island to Mapo Gyeongchang in Seoul. However, Yeomha was passable during high tide only and Sondolmok seaway(off the coast of Gwangseong-ri, Buleun-myeon, Ganghwa-gun) was extremely dangerous. The pioneer of the Jowoon Waterway was the son of Chung-Heon Choi(figure of authority at the time), Lee Choi. He tried to build the Gulpo Canal bypassing Sondolmok and directly linking the coastal waters of Incheon and the Han River. He tried to construct the first canal in Korea that was designed to start from the coast of Gajwa-dong, Seo-gu, Incheon via Wontonghyeon(AKA Wontongee Hill) and present day Gulpo River, and to flow into the Han River. The present-day Maroon settle- ments — Moore Town, Charles Town, and Scott's Hall in the east, and Accompong in the west — are now nearly indistin- guishable, on the surface, from other rural Jamaican villages.1 Among the things which continue to set the Maroons apart from their non-Maroon neighbors are a number of linguistic features which appear to be found only in Maroon areas. The Maroon settlements have been described by two leading authorities as "centres of linguistic conservatism" (Cassidy & Le Page 1980: xli); but very little substantial documentation has yet appeared in print to back up this claim.2 While conducting an ethnographic study among the Jamaican Maroons in 1977-8,1 encountered a number of complex linguistic phenomena which were closely tied to the traditional ceremonial sphere in the various communities.

Next, the impact of heavy drinking on Gross National Happiness will be examined. As an outcome of this study, some relevant strategies to minimize harm related to alcohol in Bhutan will be presented. The study makes a contribution to the increasing number of anthropological, legal, pedagogical, philosophical, political, and socio-legal studies concerned with pragmatism and hope by approaching crisis as ground, hope as figure, and pragmatism as transition or placeholder between them. In effect this work makes evident the agency of the past in the apprehension of the present, whose complexity is conceptualized as scale, in order to hopefully refigure ethnography’s future role as an anticipatory process rather than a pragmatic response to crisis or an always already emergent world. This dissertation is based on over two years of fieldwork inside NGOs, NPOs, and think tanks, hundreds of conversations, over a hundred interviews, and archival research in Seoul, South Korea. The transformation of the “386 generation” and Roh Moo Hyun’s presidency from 2003 to 2008 serve as both the contextual background and central figures of the study. This work replicates the historical, contemporary, and anticipated transitions of my informants by responding to the problem of agency inherent in crisis with a sense of scale and a rescaling of agency.

Whereas films in the 1990s presented North Koreans as villains, by the 2000s most films took a more nuanced approach, presenting North Koreans as complex people with the potential to adapt in South Korean society. This paper analyzes three films from the mid-2000s dealing with North Korean issues (A Bold Family [2005], Over the Border [2006], and Welcome to Dongmakgol [2005]) in the context of the South Korean political landscape and North-South relations at the time. The paper argues that mid-2000s films represent a transitional point in the filmic depiction of North Koreans in South Korean film, opening up possibilities of hybridity in Korean identity. These films exhibit an almost ethnographic impulse to document everyday life, and as such contribute broadly to a visual anthropology of North-South Korean relations.     The Rise of Soju 燒酒: The Transfer of Distillation Technology from “China” to Korea during the Mongol Period (1206–1368)* Hyunhee PARK 朴賢熙** Introduction Since 2012, Paul Buell has examined the key role that the Mongols played, dur- ing the age of their massive empire (early 13th to late 14th century), in improv- ing on a pre-existing Chinese technology through producing an easily portable apparatus for distillation.
