Sabarmati River originates from Aravalli hills near village Tepur in Udaipur district of Rajasthan, the biggest state in India is well known for its Rajasthan and flows for 371 km before finally merging diverse topography. The state of Rajasthan can be divided with the Arabian Sea. Thus the Basin of Sabarmati River into the following geographical regions viz.: western and encompasses states of Rajasthan and Gujarat covering north western region, well known for the Thar Desert; the an area of 21,674 Sq.km between 70°58’ to 73°51’ East eastern region famous for the Aravalli hills, whereas, the longitudes and 22°15’ to 24°47’ North latitudes. The southern part of the state with its stony landscape offers Vatrak stream basin is circumscribed by Aravalli hills typical sites for water resource development where most on the north and north-east, Rann of Kachchh on the of the man-made reservoirs are present. Mahi River basin west and Gulf of Khambhat on the south.

Degree College, Oghi, Pakistan E-mail: [email protected] Received 12 August 2020; Accepted 20 September 2020; Published 1 December 2020 Abstract Ichthyofaunal composition is the most important and essential biotic component of an aquatic ecosystem. There is worldwide distribution of fresh water fishes. Pakistan is blessed with a diversity of fishes owing to streams, rivers, dams and ocean. In freshwater bodies of the country about 193 fish species were recorded. There are about 30 species of fish which are commercially exploited for good source of proteins and vitamins. The fish marketing has great socio economic value in the country. Unfortunately, fish fauna is declining at alarming rate due to water pollution, over fishing, pesticide use and other anthropogenic activities. Therefore, about 20 percent of fish population is threatened as endangered or extinct. All Mashers are ‘endangered’, notably Tor putitora, which is also included in the Red List Category of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as Endangered. Mashers (Tor species) are distributed in Southeast Asian and Himalayan regions including trans-Himalayan countries like Pakistan and India. The heavy flood of July, 2010 resulted in the minimizing of Tor putitora species Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the fish is now found extinct from river Swat.

Factors like altitude, bed gradient, dominated substratum and habitat types of the streams have also been studied. These streams fall under Type-B category on the basis of habitat variability, gradient and sinuosity. 43 fish species represented by 6 orders have been reported from the study area. Out of all 43 fish species, 13 come under threatened categories of Red List of IUCN, out of which 2, 3 and 8 come under Endangered (EN), Vulnerable (VU) and Low Risk near threatened category (LRnt) respectively. It has been analyzed from the above pattern that maximum fish species reported from this wetland have fallen under different threatened categories. We have been extracting energy, materials and organisms from nature and altering landscapes at a rate that cannot be a sustainable one. Our nature is an essential partnership; an 'essential', because each living species has its space and role', and performs an activity vital to the whole; a 'partnership', because the biological species or the living components of nature can only thrive together, because together they create a dynamic equilibrium. Nature is further a dynamic entity that never remains the same- that changes, that adjusts, that evolves; 'equilibrium', that is in spirit, balanced and harmonious. Nature, in fact, promotes evolution, radiation and diversity. The current biodiversity is an inherited vital resource to us, which needs to be carefully conserved for our future generations as it holds the key to the progress in agriculture, aquaculture, clothing, food, medicine and numerous other fields.

												  Surveys of Native Freshwater Fishes in Surin Province, ThailandSurveys of native freshwater fi shes in Surin province, Thailand Hatairat SAOWAKOON*, Samnao SAOWAKOON, Apaporn PADOONGPOJ and Kittikorn JINDAPOL Rajamangala University of Technology Isan ABSTRACT Surveys of native freshwater fi shes in Surin were conducted during October, 2000-September, 2002. Fish specimens were collected by various types of fi shing gears e.g. gill net, purse seine, hook and lines, traps, and other fi shing methods such as electro-fi shing and Sodium cyanide were applied in some cases. The fi sh samplings were undertaken at the following fi ve sampling sites; 1) Mun River at Thatoom District, 2) Chee River at Muang district, 3) Ampauen reservoir at Muang District, 4) Haui Lampork reservoir at Srikhorapoom District and 5) Haui Sa-neng reservoir and Surin Campus Reservoir at Muang District. The fi sh were subsequently analyzed for taxonomy and distribution. The results indicated that 108 fi sh species within 25 families were recorded. Cyprinidae family was found as the most dominant comprising of 49 species, followed by Siluridae (7 species), Cobitidae (7 species), Bagridae(6 species), Pangasiidae (6 species), Belontiidae (4 species), Channidae (4 species), Mastacembelidae (4 species), Notopteridae (2 species), Ambasseidae (2 species), Soleidae (2 species), Clupeidae (2 species), and the families of one species ; Blonidae, Hemiramphidae, Clupeidae, Balitoridae, Gyrinocheilidae, Anabantidae, Eleotridae, Helostomatidae, Osphronemidae, Nandidae, Sundasalangidae, Synbranchidae and Tetraodontidae. The populations are mostly farmers, working in extensive farming systems. Natural water resources are mainly exploited as farm inputs, such as rivers, creeks, reservoirs and some from irrigation projects for crop cultivation.

Department of Zoology, Bajali College, Pathsala, Barpeta, Assam - 781325, India *Corresponding Author E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The present study was done on the basis of a preliminary survey conducted during May, 2012 to April, 2014 for two consecutive year in the Kaldia river of Barpeta district in lower Brahmaputra valley of Assam, India to assess the diversity of fish germplasm and their conservation status on the river. Findings revealed that the occurrence of 116 indigenous freshwater fish species from 9 orders, 31 families and 72 genera. Order Cypriniformes was the most dominant with 55 species followed by Siluriformes, Perciformes, Osteoglossiformes, Clupeiformes, Anguilliformes, Cyprinodontiformes, Symbranchiformes and Tetradontiformes. Among the families recorded, cyprinidae was the most dominant. Result of the present study showed that 50 species common, 48 species scanty and 18 species were found rare in the area. Among the collected ichthyofauna 1(0.86%) species are endangered, 4 (3.45%) species are vulnerable, 10 (8.62%) species are near threatened, 94 (81.03%) least concern, 5 (4.31%) data deficient, 2 (1.72%) not evaluated as per IUCN (2013.2). Whereas 5 (4.31%) species are endangered, 22 (18.96%) species are vulnerable, 37 (31.89%) species are lower risk near threatened, 8 (6.89%) are lower risk and least concern, 1 (0.86%) is data deficient, 1 (0.86%) is critically endangered and 42 (36.21%) are not evaluated according to CAMP status(1998).

College, Shahdol, M.P., INDIA Available online at: www.isca.in, www.isca.me Received 7th April 2015, revised 17th May 2015, accepted 22 nd June 2015 Abstract The present piece of research work carried out to explore the variations in reproductive physiology in an experimental teleost fish, Rasbora daniconius at the different ecological habitats. The experimental fish species was collected from the different selected experimental sites at regular intervals and the gonadosomatic index was observed. A great deal of variation in gonadosomatic index was observed in fishes collected from the different sites. At a particular site the gonadosomatic index value was very diminished in comparison to other sites. The diminished value of GSI at a particular site was due to heavily intoxicated water reservoir.
