Our mission stays the same: to support our community’s green spaces, and to educate our community in the areas of gardening, horticulture, conservation, and related topics. GCH members serve as volunteers, and our profits from the Bulb Mart are given back to WELCOME the community in support of our mission. In the last fifteen years, we have given back over $3.5 million in grants to the community! The Garden Club of Houston’s first Plant Sale was held in 1942, on the steps of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, with plants dug from members’ gardens. Plants propagated from our own members’ yards will be available again this year as well as plants and bulbs sourced from near and far that are unique, interesting, and well suited for area gardens. -

ENH1151 Rainlily, Zephyranthes and Habranthus spp.: Low- Maintenance Flowering Bulbs for Florida Gardens1 Gary W. Knox2 What is a rainlily? Rainlily refers to any of about 70 species of Zephyranthes and Habranthus, all of which are flowering bulbs that share common names of rainlily, fairy lily, rainflower and zephyrlily. These small bulbs earned the name “rainlily” because they often flower within a few days after rainfall. From spring through fall, rainlily can produce flushes of star-shaped, trumpet-like flowers that are white, pink or yellow, depending on the species. Flowers of some new hybrids are in shades of peach, orange and red, and some have multi- colored flowers in striped or picotee patterns. Rainlily’s easy care, broad adaptability and beautiful, starry flowers make it ideal for gardens in Florida! Rainlily flowers in spring, summer or fall, depending on species and garden conditions. Each six-petalled, funnel- shaped flower is perched at the top of a stem that ranges in Figure 1. Atamasca rainlilies (Zephyranthes atamasca) in a home height from 2 inches to more than 12 inches. The process of urbanization from 2000 was analyzed in the area of "one major city with three vice cities and six groups", according to the urban master planning of Hangzhou from 2001 to 2020. The results show that dramatic changes have occurred for land use types during the ten years from 2000 to 2010 in Hangzhou, of which urban land has become the main type of land use and the area of arable land has presented serious loss. This study found that the Gramineae and Compositae species were the main groups of ruderals in 1665 quadrats, which reflected the characteristics of a few large families. The number of Monotypic and Oligotypic family/genera accounted for 67.3% of the total number of families and 97.5% of the total number of genera. -

A consensus classification is pro- posed here, based on recent molecular phylogenetic studies, morphological and cytogenetic variation, and accounting for secondary criteria of classification, such as nomenclatural stability. Using the latest sutribal classification of Hippeastreae (Hippeastrinae and Traubiinae) as a foundation, we propose the recognition of six genera, namely Eremolirion gen. nov., Hippeastrum, Phycella s.l., Rhodolirium s.str., Traubia, and Zephyranthes s.l. A subgeneric classification is suggested for Hippeastrum and Zephyranthes to denote putative subclades. -

In India, the plant species is used in folk medicine along with Z. flava for treatment of diabetes, ear and chest ailments and viral infections. A study was conducted to see the diversity of microbes associated with rhizosphere of this plant. It was observed that fungal species such as Alternaria zinniae, Aspergillus niger, Penicillium sp., Paecilomyces sp. were present in the rhizosphere. Among the bacterial diversity, 3 different species of Bacillus and only 1 Streptobacillus sp. was isolated. Some endomycorrhizal species i.e. Gigaspora gigantea, Acaulospora bireticiulata, Glomus macrocarpa, Glomus sp.-1, Sclerocystis coccogenum, Sclerocystis sinuosa, Glomus mosseae, Glomus sp.-2, were isolated from the rhizospheric soil samples. The roots were detected for extreme arbuscular mycorhizal endomycorrhizal fungal infection with Arum type colonization having rectangular and profuse vesicles with hyphae entering the cortical cells of root. About 3 different species of Actinomycetes i.e. Streptomyces spp. were too observed in the rhizosphere. -

Master Gardener Corner: Summer bulbs for summer splendor Originally run week of February 7, 2017 Now is the time to get your catalog orders in for summer-blooming bulbs such as caladiums, gladiolas and dahlias. Summer blooming bulbs tend to come from tropical places and like it warm. They should be planted after the soil has warmed up and all danger of frost has passed. Many are tender or marginally hardy in zones 7 and colder. In Western New York they can be grown as annuals or dug up and stored for the winter. If you plan to save them, all tender bulbs need to be lifted in fall before the soil freezes. There are a number of unusual tender bulbs that are worth trying if you are looking for something different and a bit exotic for your garden. Summer Hyacinth (Galtonia candicans) hails from South Africa. The three to four foot flower spikes are laden with sweet-scented, bell-shaped, white, waxy blossoms. A single plant may bloom for up to six weeks as each bulb produces several flowering stems. The long-lasting flowers are also suitable for cut flowers. Long, strap-shaped, grey-green leaves grow at the base of the stems. Just a half- dozen bulbs can create an impressive display from mid-summer to early fall. They prefer to be left undisturbed so try growing them in a container for a real showstopper. -

VERDIANUM, A NEW SPECIES FROM SANTA CATARINA1 HENRIQUE MALLMANN BÜNEKER2 REGIS EDUARDO BASTIAN3 ABSTRACT In this article, Hippeastrum verdianum, a new species of Amaryllidaceae (Amaryllidoideae, Hippeastreae), which occurs in rocky cliffs in Santa Catarina (Brazil), is described and illustrated. Data are provided on their habitat, ecology and geographical distribution. The new species shows morphological affinity with H. correiense and H. papilio. In order to establish a consistent argumentative basis for the description of the new species, we clarify the taxonomic identity of H. correiense, proposing lectotypes for it as well as other binomials that we consider as synonyms.
