Newsletter 8 – 19th October 2020

Virtual open night info

The open night will take place on Monday 19th October at 7.30. Microsoft Teams calls are on-going with our feeder primary schools. We wish to thank the staff in all the schools for their support and help. Ordinarily we would travel around to each school getting a wonderful insight into the amazing work that takes place in the schools, but all is changed unfortunately. The idea of virtual school visits this time last year would not have figured on any of our radars, but such is life. We would also like to thank our students that helped with the calls to the primary schools. For any families of 5th or 6th class boys that wish to take part in our virtual can do so by using this link to join http://bit.ly/CBSTOpen20

There will be lots of samples of what we do in the school on the night. Staff have been working hard as always to prepare for this new venture. The open night is always a lovely night to make connections with people around the school or afterwards for a cup of tea, so we hope to continue in a similar trend from a distance. The closing date for enrolment is the 9th November this year and applications are already coming in. All information and applications are available on our website through the enrolment link, https://cbsthurles.ie/enrolment/

Mr Charlie O’Loughlin

It was with deep regret that we were informed of the passing of our friend and former colleague Mr. Charlie O’Loughlin. Charlie hailed from Kanturk, Co. Cork, and gave most of his working career as a teacher of Accounting and Business here in CBS, starting in 1970. Charlie settled in Thurles, marrying Mary and having two sons Barry and Brian, both themselves becoming teachers. Charlie was a former Harty Cup coach in the school and retired in 2009 happy and proud as the school ended its long wait to return the Harty Cup to the trophy cabinet. Long after his retirement Charlie continued to be seen on the side-line at school matches. An avid sports fan, Charlie was always completely unwavering in his support of his home county and in particular Cork GAA. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

1st Year hurling at lunchtime

60 boys are out hurling daily in the Railway Field. They are pucking around in pairs looking to improve their striking. The rest of the boys play fun games in the near section of the field. A handful of boys also choose to walk the boundary of the field with all groups getting plenty of fresh air and exercise at a social distance and getting a break from wearing their face mask in the wide-open surrounds.

First Year History

Pictures of 1st years from 1E and 1A in Ms McGraths History class excavating like archaeologists. There were taking chocolate chips out of cookies using a compass and toothbrush and putting the findings into polythene bags. We are reliably informed that no cookies were harmed during the exercise, but some teachers are upset over their missing cookies turning up in class.
