NG-16 Cygnus Spacecraft Named After Astronaut Ellison Onizuka
>>>> July 2021 State News for NSPE Members NG-16 Cygnus Spacecraft Named After Astronaut Ellison Onizuka Kona's own homegrown hero, the late astronaut Ellison Onizuka, is being honored by having a spacecraft named after him. The S.S. Ellison Onizuka is a NG-16 cargo delivery mission shuttle serving the International Space Station, according to the West Hawaii Today article. Northrop Grumman Corporation announced on July 13 that it was proud to name the NG-16 Cygnus spacecraft after Ellison Onizuka. It is the company's tradition to name each Cygnus spacecraft after an individual who has played a pivotal role in human spaceflight. Onizuka was selected in honor of his status as the first Asian American astronaut to reach space. (Credit:NASA) Onizuka's NASA career began in January 1978, when he was selected for the astronaut program. Completing his training in August 1979, he went on to work on orbiter test and checkout teams, as well as launch support crews at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. His first spaceflight experience came on Jan. 24, 1985, when he flew as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery for STS 51-C—the first space shuttle mission for the Department of Defense. Onizuka, who spent nearly his entire life flying in air and in space, lost his life during the STS 51-L mission when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after launch on January 28, 1986. NASA ASTRONAUT (FORMER) PERSONAL DATA: Born in Chicago, Illinois, March 17, 1936. One grown son. EDUCATION: Attended Florida elementary and secondary schools and is a graduate of Miami Edison High School, Miami, Florida; received a bachelor of science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Auburn University in 1958. ORGANIZATIONS: Associate Fellow, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics; Fellow, American Astronautical Society; and Member, Society of Experimental Test Pilots, and the U.S. Naval Institute. SPECIAL HONORS: Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal (1982); NASA Distinguished Service Medals (2); JSC Certificate of Commendation (1970); JSC Group Achievement Award (1972); Navy Distinguished Service Medal; Navy Astronaut Wings; SETP Ivan C. NASA Reflects America’s Changing Opportunities; Social, NASA Impacts US Culture Education: Inspiring Cultural, and Students as Only NASA Can Educational Legacies Social, Cultural, and Educational Legacies 459 NASA Reflects The Space Shuttle, which began flying in 1981 and ushered in an entirely new human spaceflight program, was a watershed for cultural diversity America’s within NASA and had substantial cultural impact outside the realm of Changing spaceflight. In the 1950s and 1960s, opportunities for American women and minorities were limited as they were often segregated into pink Opportunities; collar and menial jobs. NASA’s female and minority employees faced NASA Impacts similar obstacles. The Space Shuttle Program opened up opportunities US Culture for these groups—opportunities that did not exist during Projects Mercury and Gemini or the Apollo and Skylab Programs. NASA’s transformation was a direct consequence of a convergence of events Jennifer Ross-Nazzal Shannon Lucid that happened in the 1960s and 1970s and continued through the Helen Lane following 3 decades. These included: public policy changes instituted on the national level; the development of a spacecraft whose physical capabilities departed radically from the capsule concept; and an increase in the number of women and minorities holding degrees in the fields of science and engineering, making them attractive candidates for the space agency’s workforce. Over the course of the program, the agency’s demographics reflected this transformation: women and minorities were incorporated into the Astronaut Corps and other prominent technical and administrative positions. The impact of NASA’s longest-running program extends beyond these dramatic changes. -

Smith Resources, Science, and Industry Division Summary On August 9, 2005, the space shuttle Discovery successfully completed the first of two “Return to Flight” (RTF) missions — STS-114. It was the first shuttle launch since the February 1, 2003, Columbia tragedy. NASA announced on July 27, 2005, the day after STS-114’s launch, that a second RTF mission has been indefinitely postponed because of a problem that occurred during Discovery’s launch that is similar to what led to the loss of Columbia. Two shuttle-related facilities in Mississippi and Louisiana were damaged by Hurricane Katrina, which may further delay the next shuttle launch. It currently is expected some time in 2006. This report discusses the Columbia tragedy, the Discovery mission, and issues for Congress regarding the future of the shuttle. The Loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia The space shuttle Columbia was launched on its STS-107 mission on January 16, 2003. After completing a 16-day scientific research mission, Columbia started its descent to Earth on the morning of February 1, 2003. As it descended from orbit, approximately 16 minutes before its scheduled landing at Kennedy Space Center, FL, Columbia broke apart over northeastern Texas. He enjoys genealogy, traveling, photography, stained glass, woodworking and model rocketry. His parents, Donald J. Ross and Phyllis E. (Dillabaugh) Ross, are deceased. Karen’s mother, Wilma Pearson, resides in Sheridan, Indiana. Her father, Morris D. Pearson is deceased. EDUCATION: Graduated from Crown Point High School, Crown Point, Indiana, in 1966; received Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 1970 and 1972, respectively. ORGANIZATIONS: Lifetime Member of the Association of Space Explorers, the Purdue Alumni Association and the Clan Ross Association of the USA. He served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Space Explorers, USA from 2011 through 2013. SPECIAL HONORS: Awarded two Defense Superior Service Medals, the Air Force Legion of Merit, four Defense Meritorious Service Medals, two Air Force Meritorious Service Medals and the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement. He was a Distinguished Graduate of the United State Air Force Test Pilot School and the recipient of the Outstanding Flight Test Engineer Award, Class 75B. Ross received 15 NASA medals. He was awarded the American Astronautical Society’s Victor A. Prather Award for spacewalking achievements (1985, 1990 and 1999) and the Flight Achievement Award (1992, 1996, 1999 and 2002). Ross received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Purdue University in 2000 and the Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award from Purdue University in 2004. -
