W o ne a o O hen this Synod assembled year g , deep solicitude p of pressed every serious mind . The bloody strife four years of civil war was Closed ; but the menwho had lived so long away from the humanizing influences of home and fromthe purifying po wer of the Sanctuary were returning to the places whence they had gone out; and it could not be foretold how o urcommunities would be aff ected cor thereby. Indeed , already there was seen to be an alarming m l i ruption of public ora s . Cr me was fearfully prevalent ; atrocious murders were daily committed ; gigantic frauds were perpetrated by men of high position ; suddenly acquired wealth had begotten luxurious and profiigate manners hitherto unknowni nourrepublic mammon and fashion . w ere leading the peOple in a carnival of un godliness ; and the piety o f the church did not seem v igorous

' m flo o 'of an nl ho ef ul enough to ste this d irreligion d vice . The o y p ’ S n m d ig was that God s children recognized the peril , and be oane t o wn h . heir supineness . The churc throughout the land felt that i n a and r $ r help was God lone ; the prayer eve ywhere was, Tu n us $ a 0 God and e e and ed . gain , , caus thy face to shin we shall be sav hi s s n s a l ana ff e in the L rd T ighi g of I r e arose as . cceptable o r g ; o 8

Eight of our Presbyteries rejoice over more or less extended re $ v i v als . r 0 m The Presbytery of Bu lington reports , that most of congregations have received a l arger increase than usual and C h w w n particularly mentions the first hurc of Camden , to hich bet ee 4 0 50 o f and have been added . The co grega m w w n w tions ost abundantly blessed , ere To a da, Monroeto n , Wysox , w l w Or e l , Rome , Terryto n and Wyalusing .

2 ud . w The additions ere largely from the youth , especially of th e . has of New w Sabbath Schools Nor the Presbytery Bruns ick, two of so often blessed , been passed by . The churches Princeton 1 1 0 have received during the year members . In other churches there have been special tokens of the presence of the Spirit. The college o f New Jersey has been again visited w ith a precious work of w h a of f o r grace , hic first ppeared after the day prayer colleges ; 6 about 0 students expressed a hope in Christ . The High School at Lawrenceville has also beensignally favored ; 3 0 appear to have n f w l passed from death u to li e . In this religious a akening the Fema e

. o f Seminary at the same place , has shared In the Presbytery 3 rd w 1 st w and Passaic, the church of Ne ark, church Morristo n ’ L . of yon s Farms, report large additions The Presbytery West J ersey has w itnessed the converting power o f the Holy Ghost in m o f w any its churches , but more prominently in Green ich , Cape 1 st d n Island , Salem , Cold Spring, and church Bri geton ; more tha w o ne half of the additions are from Sabbath Schools . There ere l m 1 4 w a so any heads of families , and in one church ere recei ved f w l t over sixty years o age . The Presbytery of Ne ton reported as w r o f L has year, a blessed o k grace in several churches . The ord returned and visited other portions of that field , and Yellow Frame, r t w 2 nd S troudsbur h re Ma ksboro , S e artsville, Oxford and g , are n th j oi ci g over e conversion of sinners . While there has been no general visitation o f the Spirit in his converting power in the Pres $ b ter y yof Raritan , several churches have received larger additions M usconetcon e the than usual ; Milford and g Valley , have receiv d largest accessions . Fromthis narration we shall look for certain results and these ' ’ i n the s i ri tuali t o God eo le o f we find p y f s p p . One the Presby $ teri es w revived reports, the tone of piety seems to be marked ith $ $ m . l ore than ordinaryhealth and vigor Another dec ares, new 9 vigor is infused into churches as a result of the revival ; and a desire d d to occupy waste places . Yet another recor s the cheering wor s , $ over the whole ground there is the commencement of a new w $ state of things in prayer meetings and public orship . The Pres b ter of New w at y y Bruns ick thus expresses its hope , the devout nto W tention give the preaching of the ord , the willingness of the n unconverted to converse upo the subj ect of personal religion , the m n arked interest manifested by the you g in this momentous subject, and the increased attendance at our weekly prayer meetings , the ’ gro wing disposition of God s people to labor and pray f or the con o f version souls, are al l indications that the Holy Spirit is moving $ uponthe hearts of the people . It is gratifying to learn that Sabbath Schools are receiving that the care w hich their importance demands . All Presbyteries make fl in special mention Of these, as ourishing, and in manyinstances creasing i nvigor and efficiency . The study of the shorter Cate o ur chism receives attention in Presbyteries, and yet its importance of w requires evengreater consideration . The Presbytery Ne ton has a committee to whom reports are ordered to be sent fromthe Sabbath Schools of the churches ; and by answers to a schedule of m of of questions , Presbytery is infor ed the condition the schools . ’ Thus this branch o f the churches operations passes under the su of p ervi si o nof Presbytery . This plan is well worthy universal i mitation . The attendance upon the preached Word is reported as encour a ging, improving, and in many instances the attention is marked , t l serious, and prayerful . A spiri of iberality is manifested in the ’ w increase of pastors salaries, and in some hat enlarged contributions

B . w of to the oards of our church Very few ho ever have, in either w these respects, attained the measure, hich the indispensable needs or of n of the ministry require, the wants of a race dying si ners call for. ' The Presbytery of Susquehanna deplores an indiflerence to th e pastoral relation and a disposition among their churches, to rest
