York Academy Upper School MYP Summer Reading Assignment Over the course of your summer break you will be expected to read at least three different novels from the summer reading list for your grade level. For one of your selected novels, please complete one of the following tasks by the start of next school year (8/12/19). This will be your first graded assignment for next year. 1: Mix-Tape (no tech. required) Create a mix-tape for your novel. Choose at least 10 songs that correspond to different scenes in your book. For each song, list the title and artist, and provide a thorough description of where in the novel this song fits best. Explain how each song connects to a significant aspect of the novel (characters, plot, theme, etc.). Quote lyrics from the song and justify why you think this is an appropriate choice using at least one piece of textual evidence per song (for a total of 10). Choice 2: Profile Presentation Create a Google Slides presentation that focuses on how the protagonist of your novel has or develops IB Learner Attributes. You must list all ten traits and discuss how the protagonist has demonstrated each one. If he or she does not demonstrate a trait, you must explain why. (Remember, the traits are thinker, knowledgeable, reflective, principled, inquirer, balanced, communicator, risk-taker, caring, and open- minded. See our school’s website for specific definitions.) Provide a piece of textual evidence for each trait to justify your analysis (for a total of 10). Choice 3: Essay (no tech. required) The essay will be a minimum of 800 words and discuss an important theme from the novel. You must share how this theme emerged throughout the novel and what literary devices the author used to illustrate the theme (ie. characterization, setting, conflict, symbolism, figurative language, etc.). Consider how the characters developed throughout the novel and how they grew in response to the various conflicts that took place. Your essay must be at least five paragraphs and include at least 10 examples of textual evidence. Summer Reading Lists Choice 4: YouTube Book Talk This is a four minute video where you will explain all about the book: title, author, page length, plot, while also providing a short summary and review. In your summary, you will discuss important points in the story about the characters and the plot. After completely summarizing what took place, you will provide a detailed review about your reaction to the book overall. You will need to share what you liked about the novel, what you didn't like, and any deeper connections that you made while reading. During your video, provide a list containing 10 of the best quotes and explain why you chose each one.
