CLASSROOM COUNTRY PROFILES Hungary (Magyarország) The name “Hungary” is adapted from Hungaria, the Medieval Latin term derived by writers from the name of the people (H) ungari or ungri. Hungarians call their country Magyarország, derived from Magyars which likely refers to the most promi- nent Hungarian tribe known as the “Megyer “. King Stephen I (997-1038), defeated various tribes, implementing Christiani- ty, and ultimately founding the Hungarian state. After WWII, Hungary fell into the Soviet sphere. In 1956, Hungarians tried to put an end to Soviet control. University of Miskolc Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering MSc in Petroleum Geoscience Engineering The University of Miskolc (Hungary) is one of the few higher education institutes in Central Europe where engineering training related to geology, geophysics, hydrology, environment, mining and hydrocarbon industries takes place. The Faculty has a nearly 280-year old tradition in mining education, being a legal successor of the Mining School founded in 1735 in Selmecbánya (now Banska Stiavnica). The Petroleum Geoscience Engineering Masters program builds up on strong earth sciences and petroleum engineering basis. It focuses on competencies, skills and methods applied in geology, geophysics, petrophysics and geochemistry as demanded by exploration, field development and production projects. Special attention is paid to the grey area between geology and petroleum engineering including but not limited to estimation, categorization and classification of resources and reserves as well as management of petroleum E&P projects. Literacy and Illiteracy in Austria–Hungary. the Case of Bulgarian Migrant Communities

The Case of Bulgarian Migrant Communities The present study aims to contribute to the clarification of the question of the spread of literacy in East Central Europe and the Balkans in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by offering an examination of Bulgarian migrant diasporas in Austria–Hungary and, in particular, in Hungary, i.e. the Eastern part of the Empire. The study of literacy among migrants is important because immigrants represent a possible resource for the larger societies in which they live, so comparisons of the levels of education among migrants (for instance with the levels of education among the majority community, but also with the levels of education among the communities of their homelands) may shed light on how the different groups benefited from interaction with each other. In this essay I analyze data on literacy, illiteracy and semi-literacy rates among migrants on the basis of the Hungarian censuses of 1890, 1900 and 1910. I present trends and tendencies in levels of literacy or illiteracy in the context of the social aspects of literacy and its relationship to birthplace, gender, age, confession, migration, selected destinations and ethnicity. I also compare literacy rates among Bulgarians in Austria–Hungary with the literacy rates among other communities in the Dual Monarchy and Bulgaria and investigate the role of literacy in the preservation of identity. My comparisons and analyses are based primarily (but not exclusively) on data regarding the population that had reached the age at which school attendance was compulsory, as this data more accurately reflect levels of literacy than the data regarding the population as a whole. -

Although Hungary enjoyed independence for centuries in its early history, the experience of foreign domination over the last five centuries is one of the defining features of Hungarian public consciousness. Most notably, Hungary was under the control of the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, the Habsburgs in the eighteenth, nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century, and the Soviet Union from 1945 until the regime change in 1989. Therefore, Hungarians had to master the techniques of survival under foreign domination.1 They learned how to operate informally, under and within formal, rigid rules, which represented the interests of the dominant foreign power. Nonetheless, during its twentieth-century history, Hungary made some genuine albeit short-lived attempts to achieve democracy. First, there was the brief liberal-democratic government of Count Mihály Károlyi in late 1918. A second attempt was made during the semi-democratic coalition government between 1945 and 1947. Finally, Hungary operated as a democracy for twelve remarkable days during the anti-totalitarian revolution of October 1956. The Hungarian revolution was internally successful but was crushed by the inter- vention of the Soviet Red Army. These shining moments of recent Hungarian history cannot hide the fact that throughout the twentieth century Hungary enjoyed democracy for one decade only, the 1990s. -

The city has excellent accessibility by road, train, and air, while the Trimodal Logistics Centre, operating at Debrecen International Airport, creates direct rail connections between Debrecen and some of the major European ports (Hamburg, Germany – Rotterdam, the Netherlands – Koper, Slovenia and Constanța, Romania). Debrecen is directly connected to the Hungarian motorway network, and thereby also to Western Europe, and so it is easily accessible from any major European city via motorways. Debrecen is an important hub of the international railway corridor connecting Budapest and Moscow, whose Hungarian section is the busiest railway line in Hungary, and part of the core railway network corridors of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). Debrecen International Airport, complying with the Schengen criteria, serves scheduled flights to several major European cities. John Hayter and Laurinda Brown were, at that time, tutors for the course. More particularly, Zsolt joined John Hayter’s study group and John became his personal tutor for the year. John and Laurinda taught in the university and visited the members of their study groups in schools when they were on school practice (2 different schools over the year). -
