  • Irish Schools Champions 1916
Irish Schools Athletics Champions 1916-2021 Updated May 2021 To be forgotten is to die twice In February 1916 Irish Amateur Athletic Association (IAAA) circularised the principal schools in Ireland regarding the advisability of holding Schoolboys’ Championships. At the IAAA’s Annual General Meeting held on Monday 3rd April, 1916 in Wynne’s Hotel, Dublin, the Hon. Secretary, H.M. Finlay, referred to the falling off in the number of affiliated clubs due to the number of athletes serving in World War I and the need for efforts to keep the sport alive. Based on responses received from schools, the suggestion to hold Irish Schoolboys’ Championships in May was favourably considered by the AGM and the Race Committee of the IAAA was empowered to implement this project. Within a week a provisional programme for the inaugural athletics meeting to be held at Lansdowne Road on Saturday 20th May, 1916 had been published in newspapers, with 7 events and a relay for Senior and 4 events and a relay for Junior Boys. However, the championships were postponed "due to the rebellion" and were rescheduled to Saturday 23rd September, 1916, at Lansdowne Road. In order not to disappoint pupils who were eligible for the championships on the original date of the meeting, the Race Committee of the IAAA decided that “a bona fide schoolboy is one who has attended at least two classes daily at a recognised primary or secondary school for three months previous to 20th May, except in case of sickness, and who was not attending any office or business”.

They say your school days are the best of your life. So too, the task of capturing the memories of these years is of great importance to us. Every St. Mary’s College Annual is published retrospectively but the production of these particular volumes is very late indeed. The ideal way to record memories is quickly. They fade with the passing of time. Working on the 02/03 and 03/04 Annuals after such a length of time has been difficult; records have been filed away, memories are rusty and some things which we would like to have included are simply gone.

Conditions, if any, Stipulated by Witness. Nil. File No S.241. From B.S.M.2 STATEMENTBY EDMUNDTOBIN, Ballinalackin, Carryspillane, Kilmallock, COUNTYLIMERICK. I was born in Ballinalackin in the year 1S94 and was educated in Glenbrohane National School. In about the year 1910 I went to learn the blacksmith trade at my uncle's place hi Ballylanders. About the year 1913 a Company of Volunteers was formed in Ballylanders. Amongthose who joined at the start were Tadhg Crowley and Thomas Murphy. I was also one of the first to join and the three of us became great pals. Tadhg Crowley became Captain. A short time later I was accepted into the I.R.B. local circle. Soon after the formation of the Volunteer Company a Company of the Cumann na mBan was formed in the area. Our Company was one of several Companies in Count Limerick, County Cork and County Tipperary which from their formation became known as the Galtee Regiment. As well as I can remember Liam Manahan was then the O/C. of the Regiment. We met one night every week for drill with wooden rifles. Our Drill Instructor was a man named Davy Walsh of Mitchelstown. He was a very good training officer. The Cumannna mBan also met once a a week for First Aid lessons.
