C1901 in Widows Cottages, Flamstead 9 Currell James PR 1813 - Jas. labourer Marriage in IGI as Sorrell C41 b in Herts Lab at Norton. C51 widower at Norton, said b Preston, Herts. Ag Lab (Note ML do not locate any Currells in Hitchin parish then and birth is not recorded in IGI. Only Currells recorded are Thomas a labourer at Hitchin 1769 and Robert, a lab at Langley 1781-4. But 1770-71 are not included in ML.) Living near Shadrach, Alice and George Currell at Norton in 1841 who would have been his brother, nephew's widow and son if this theory is correct. 10 ? Elizabeth C51 not born in Herts. Death Index - 77 years 11 Currell Sophia C51 with father. C1871 with sister Susan Kitchener at Norton, idiot from birth 12 Currell James C61 at Hoxton, drug grinder. Ag lab 14 Currell Thomas In Militia List 1768-69 at Norton. A Thomas was at Hitchin 1771, and Kings Walden 1775. Thomas at Norton in 1786 with 5 children. I believe Thomas is James' father (who said he was born at Preston on C51). Thomas was at Hitchin parish in 1771. Also, James was living very close to Shadrach, Alice and George Currell in C41.After writing this, I checked in Herts Removal Orders and behold! Thomas was removed from Hitchin to Norton 17 1 1776 with wife Mary, and sons JAMES (2) and Shadrack (6 mo)The question should be asked: Why did Thomas go to Hitchin - where was his wife living, and were any of his relations there at the time? Is there any connection to Robert Currell (x1762 Graveley) who was my ancestor? 16 Currell William I think that William is the son of Wm and Frances who were living at Willian. First presence of Currells at Norton is baptism of Ruth in 1750 Militia List - there is a William in 1758 (Lab). Again in 1765 with 5 children. MLs kept during the intervening years, so where was William? 23 Currell William In Militia List 1781-6. Single in 1784, with 1 child 1785 24 Currell Lawrence In Militia Lists 1781-1786 - single in 1785. 29 Currell George PR gives parents as William and Mary, but clearly there is a mistake as there are William and Elizabeth and Thomas and Mary. She consistently gave her birth and birthplace details as 1814c at Norton. So, whose daughter was she? Making the unsafe assumption that she was the daughter of a married couple, there are only two possibilities (George Currell and Elizabeth had a daughter Elizabeth who was living with them in1851): James and Elizabeth Currell and Shadrack and Mary Currell. Although Elizabeth was living near Shadrack's son, Robert in 1851 and might therefore be his sister, I feel that she was more likely the daughter of James and Elizabeth. They have no recorded daughter named after Elizabeth - and a son is named after his father, James. Also, Elizabeth named a daughter, Martha. The only other Martha Currell at Norton was the daughter of Elizabeth's possible brother, George. This theory is weak and identification is not helped by the witnesses at Elizabeth's wedding who were William and Rebecca Scales who were her husband's sister and husband. 248 Giddings James Ag Lab at Norton End C41-71; labourer out of employment C81 Winesses at wedding William and Rebecca Scales.
