Welcome*to*SASE*2015*in*London.**This*will*be*our*27th*annual*conference*and*one*of*our* largest.*It*is*a*great*pleasure*to*hold*this*event*at*the*London*School*of*Economics*and*Political* Science.*The*LSE*remains*one*of*the*leading*world*centres*for*the*social*sciences*and*the*theme* of*the*conference*“Inequality*in*the*21st*Century”*resonates*with*the*history*and*traditions*of*the* institution.* * It* has* been* very* gratifying* to* see* how* SASE* participants* have* responded* to* this* theme*resulting*in*a*large*number*of*mini#conferences,*plenary*sessions,*and*network*meetings* exploring*the*subject*of*inequality*from*a*variety*of*angles.*** As*a*setting*for*the*discussion*of*this*issue,*London*is*of*course*a*living*laboratory.**Going* East*from*the*LSE*will*take*you*past*the*Royal*Courts*of*Justice*and*Fleet*Street*into*the*heart*of* the* old* City* of* London,* with* the* Bank* of* England,* the* Stock* Exchange,* the* Lloyds* Insurance* Market,*and*continuing*further*Eastwards*down*to*Docklands*and*Canary*Wharf*will*lead*you*to* where* the* huge* powerhouses* of* global* financial* markets* are* located.* Going* down* the* Strand* leads* to* the* National* Gallery,* the* West* End* Theatreland,* Covent* Garden,* cafes,* pubs,* and* restaurants* galore.* * Going* from* there* down* the* Mall* leads* to* Buckingham* Palace* and* then* Westminster,* followed* by* the* Royal* Borough* of* Kensington* and* Chelsea* where* the* wealthiest* live.* This* wealth* and* opulence* is* serviced* by* a* huge* number* of* invisible* and* semi#visible* workers* (including* many* migrants),* who* make* it* all* possible* but* whose* jobs* are* precarious,* wages*low*(and*often*supported*by*the*state*welfare*system),*and*hours*long*and*unsociable,* made*worse*by*the*lack*of*housing*at*affordable*prices*in*the*inner*city.*Alongside*this*grouping,* London* also* contains* a* huge* number* of* educational* and* research* institutions,* feeding* into* medical* services,* the* IT* industry,* the* arts* and* culture* sectors.* The* Houses* of* Parliament* and* much* of* the* British* civil* service* remain* located* in* Westminster.* This* mix* makes* London* a* vibrant*and*dynamic*place*characterized*by*deep*inequalities,*but*where*different*lifestyles*co# exist.* We* hope* alongside* the* academic* programme* of* the* conference* you* will* be* able* to* experience*some*of*this*diversity.* Participating* in* organizing* the* conference* has* been* a* pleasure* thanks* to* all* the* great* people* who* have* been* helping.* David* Marsden,* Professor* of* Industrial* Relations* at* the* LSE,* former*SASE*President*and*organizer*of*a*previous*SASE*conference*in*the*LSE,*played*a*central* role*in*ensuring*that*it*was*possible*to*hold*SASE*in*this*location.*He*has*taken*on*the*role*of* Local*Organizer*with*his*customary*efficiency*and*courtesy*and*has*ensured*that*the*conference* arrangements* and* our* relations* with* LSE* have* worked* smoothly.* Rachel* Ward* from* the* LSE* Conference*Office*has*handled*all*our*requests*with*great*efficiency*and*helpfulness.*Central*to* 5 SASE*2015:*Inequality*in*the*21st*Century London*School*of*Economics*and*Political*Science the*whole*process*has*been*the*continued*great*work*of*the*SASE*secretariat,*the*inspirational* Martha*Zuber,*forever*full*of*ideas*and*provocations*as*well*as*hugely*efficient*in*managing*the* conference*process*along*with*her*great*staff:*Jacob*Bromberg*and*Pat*Zraidi.*We*also*need*to* thank*Sciences*Po*and*the*current*and*former*directors*of*the*CSO,*Olivier*Borraz*and*Christine* Musselin* for* continuing* to* support* SASE’s* Paris* Office.* Also* my* personal* thanks* are* due* to* previous*SASE*Presidents,*Bruce*Carruthers*and*Patrick*Legales,*for*all*their*help*and*advice.* We*hope*you*have*a*great*conference,*enjoy*LSE*as*a*venue*and*experience*some*of*the* delights*that*London*can*offer.* 6 SASE*2015:*Inequality*in*the*21st*Century London*School*of*Economics*and*Political*Science About&This&Program& This*conference*schedule*has*been*loosely*divided*into*two*event*types:*speakers*and*sessions.* The*latter*category*includes*all*panels,*including*featured*panels*and*author#meets#critic*events.* In*an*attempt*to*limit*scheduling*conflicts,*sessions*do*not*overlap*with*featured*speakers.**
