2020 ROAD AIGLEMARTIGNY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS SWITZERLAND

WELCOME TO THE HOME OF CYCLING

Making a mark on history... Making a mark on cycling fans... And making an indelible mark on cycling, an integral part of the lifeblood of the Swiss cantons of and ... The 2020 UCI Road World Championships will take place in Aigle-Martigny, Switzerland, on 20-27 September. Our country is tremendously proud to be hosting one of the highlights of the cycling season, an event symbolised by the legendary rainbow jersey and which comes as recognition for Switzerland. Though this is the first time that Vaud and Valais will be hosting the UCI Road World Championships, there is a very good reason why it is coming to this part of the world. Cycling is king in the region. Ride around these two cantons and you’ll dive deep into a unique culture, discover landscapes that will take your breath away, pass through charming mountain villages and climb up to some of the world’s best-known ski resorts. You’ll also savour delicious local produce. From Aigle to Martigny and from to Verbier, the 2020 UCI Road World Championships promise to be a unique experience. Vaud and Valais have provided the venue for many Elite races in the past, among them stages of the 2009 and 2016 Tour de France, the 2016 Swiss Championships and every year stages of the Tour de Romandie and the Tour de Suisse. Known around the world for the warmth of its welcome, its expertise and authenticity, Switzerland has hosted many major sporting events, such as the Ice Hockey World Championships, the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships, the Alpine Ski World Cup and the Winter Youth Olympic Games. Situated in the heart of the Alps and Europe, Aigle-Martigny 2020 enjoys excellent transport links. The international airports of Genève-Cointrin and Zürich-Kloten link Switzerland to the rest of world, with Basel, Paris and Milan all just a short journey away. Aigle, in the canton of Vaud, is home to the UCI World Cycling Centre (UCI WCC), which also houses the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the governing body of world cycling. Most of the races will start in this town where tradition and modernity happily coexist in a natural setting and where viticulture is very much to the fore. Martigny, in the heart of Valais, will provide the venue for the final circuit of the road races. A town steeped in sport, art and culture, it plays host to a number of international events such as Agrovina and the Valais Fair (Foire du Valais), which last year attracted no fewer than 420 exhibitors and 233,779 visitors. Over the course of eight days of racing, the world will discover some magnificent landscapes, showcased by some technically challenging courses. The races in each category and discipline will wind their way through plains, vineyards and mountains. The climb up the imposing Petite Forclaz, which runs for four kilometres and boasts an elevation gain of 406 metres and an average incline of 10.2%, promises to decide the men’s and women’s road races, across each category. The Men Elite will have to negotiate it seven times, the Men Under 23 five times, the Women Elite and Men Junior three times and the Women Junior once. Some 650,000 spectators will be roadside to cheer the riders on over the course of the week. “We had Sallanches in 1980. And now we have Aigle-Martigny in 2020,” said UCI President David Lappartient. Welcome to our place, in the heart of the home of cycling.

VEHICLES ALLOCATED TO NATIONAL FEDERATIONS

The limited supply of team cars for National Federations will be provided by the organiser and its vehicle partner on the same basis as during previous UCI Road World Championships. The limited supply will be distributed to the top-ranked National Federations according to the number of riders making up their delegation. Information on the allocation of these vehicles to the National Federations will be detailed in the Technical Guide of the 2020 UCI Road World Championships which will be published at the beginning of September. All drivers representing National Federations in the race convoy at UCI Road World Championships must have a UCI Licence issued by a National Federation and are obliged to respect the UCI Regulations as well as the current guidelines for vehicle circulation. The UCI Licence must include the necessary third-party liability insurance in case of material damage or injury to others, which must be valid in all countries where the licence-holder is likely to perform his/her duties. Drivers are required to have an in-depth knowledge of cycle racing and its regulations as well as experience and ability to anticipate a wide range of race situations. It is the National Federations’ responsibility to ensure that their drivers have the necessary experience to drive in the race convoy at the UCI Road World Championships. Drivers are responsible for the manner in which they drive; if they fail to observe the regulations, they face significant financial penalties as well as the suspension of their UCI Licence (as a driver and any other role they may have). The sanctions related to driving in the race convoy are defined by Articles 2.2.038 and subsequent of the UCI Regulations.
