The pandemic brought into striking focus the role of the Arboretum as a vital community resource, essential for our mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. We saw that manifested in a remarkable uptick in visitors (weekdays were like holiday weekends!), as we welcomed kids after a remote-school day, health care workers looking to decompress, and multigenerational families from all across the region seeking a safe, restful place to gather outdoors. Even though many of our revenue sources were paused, our community responded with their donations, digging deeper to protect this treasured urban oasis. Jenny Wyatt We learned to connect with our audience in different ways, taking the 60th anniversary kanreki President, celebration of the Seattle Japanese Garden and the March Spring Forward! gala into the virtual Board of Directors sphere with events that were both informative and uplifting.

However, not all things translate to the cyber world! We dearly missed our volunteers in 2020 and are so grateful to re-introduce their passion and energy. The Arboretum team is also re-examining what it means to be an inclusive and welcoming space, and how that can be consistently seen and felt by all who visit this 230-acre haven.

As we gradually take our finger off the Pause button, what have we learned? Perhaps it’s the strength of human connections, the undeniable interplay between nature and health, and the Jane Stonecipher importance of this beloved public garden as a source of healing and inspiration for the entire community. Foundation Garden Stewards Staff Zoom 5 Events and Contributions Arboretum Foundation members and donors stood strong alongside us during this highly unusual year to steward, preserve, and enhance the Arboretum. Due to the pandemic, we were unable to host our annual cycle of fundraising events, including the 2020 Japanese Garden Party, the fall and spring plant sales, and the Gifts & Greens Galore Holiday Sale. Nonetheless, our community responded in a massive way, starting with Giving Tuesday in early December 2020, which raised more than $10,000 for the Arboretum. Shortly after, we were blown away by the response to our end-of-year appeal, which raised more than $160,000—double the amount raised during the 2019 appeal, itself a record-breaker. With the cancellation of the 2021 Northwest Flower & Garden Show, our annual Opening Night Party morphed into a virtual gala and auction entitled Spring Forward!, held on March 4. The hour-long, live-studio and pre-recorded video broadcast—hosted on YouTube—celebrated the transformative power of nature and community at our treasured park. The livestream began with a land acknowledgement by recently retired UW Botanic Gardens Director Fred Hoyt and a wonderful performance by Native American violinist Swil Kanim. Our audience then enjoyed a video tour of the Arboretum and Seattle Japanese Garden—and their core programs— led by Foundation board member Jason Morse. Ciscoe Morris made a lively cameo, Dan Hinkley shared memories in a beautiful video about Azalea Way set to music by renowned composer Paul Chihara, and UW researcher Kathy Wolf spoke about the many health benefits of spending time in nature. Our studio host, King 5’s Angela Poe Russell, did a fabulous job emceeing the live program, with help from Jason and Foundation Director Jane Ancestral Grounds: Native American violinist Swil Stonecipher. It was tremendous success, grossing more than $300,000 in Kanim performed as part of the land acknowledgement support of the Arboretum and Japanese Garden. ceremony during Spring Forward! 6 Fred Hoyt Botanical Fund In January 2021, Fred Hoyt retired as the And finally, in early May, more than 160 donors contributed over Director of UW Botanic Gardens after a $31,000 in support of the Arboretum during the annual 2021 hugely influential 38-year career at GiveBIGthe event. In July and August 2020, with funding from the Arboretum Foundation, UW Botanic Gardens horticulture staff worked on a project to restore the lower stream channel connecting the two ponds in the Woodland Garden. The channel and its rockwork—part of the original Olmsted Brothers design for the Arboretum—were badly damaged when a large sweet gum tree uprooted during a windstorm. We received a generous grant from the Hugh and Jane Ferguson Foundation to fund the removal of the sweet gum’s enormous root ball, restore the channel, and plant a new specimen tree plus numerous companion plants. Rockery Renewed: The restored rockery on the south In the fall of 2020, major new planting took place in the “upper bowl” of side of hte Rhododendron Glen stream. Rhododendron Glen as part of the multiyear restoration project funded by Mary Ellen and Gordon Mulder. New species rhododendrons and companion plants were added around the main staircase and along the streambed, as well as in and above the restored rockery on the north side of the stream. The design and permitting process is under way for improvements to the stream and adjacent plantings in the central area of the Glen, which will be both visually pleasing and positively impact the overall health of the watershed. A new, accessible overlook is planned for the area just above the Azalea Way Pond, along with path improvements leading down to the Centennial Garden—some of which have already been completed by Seattle Parks. The Mulder’s 2019 gift has had a catalytic effect, helping us leverage additional funding to complete the project from a variety of other sources, including local foundations and private donors. We are also delighted to announce that the Rhododendron Glen Restoration Project is the 2021 winner of the prestigious Garden Club of America Founders Fund, which provides monetary funds for projects nominated by member clubs (in this case, the Seattle Garden Club).

8 In late November, the Arboretum partners opened a new composting restroom in the bus-turnaround Equity and area of the Pacific Connections Garden. Solar-powered, ADA accessible, and odor-free, it is the first Justice restroom of its kind in a Seattle city park. The unit will alleviate the lack of facilities at the south end of the Arboretum, while reducing water waste, promoting sustainable practices, and providing a gender-neutral option for the park. The project was made possible through a Seattle Department of As part of our Equity Neighborhoods grant with matching funds from the Arboretum Foundation. and Justice Working Group with UW In February 2021, Seattle Parks—with matching funds from the Arboretum Foundation—completed Botanic Gardens, a long-needed restoration of the central pond in the Seattle Japanese Garden. Our volunteer community is strong! The past year posed many challenges, yet our volunteers stuck with us through it all. Despite lengthy closures, we were able to safely reopen most of our volunteer programs by May 2021! To adapt to the “new normal,” our hopeful and encouraging volunteers took on new roles and learned new procedures in order to continue supporting the Arboretum. In October 2020, we were able to reopen our Garden Stewards program in a limited capacity. Our Stewards volunteers proved up to the challenge of winter weather as we opted to continue weeding into December and January for the first time ever, in order to make up for lost time. This past fiscal year, 37 Stewards donated more than 600 hours of work to the Arboretum, battling the buttercup, herb Robert, morning Weed Warriors: The Garden Stewards went glory, and other weeds that threaten to overwhelm the collection plants. As people back to work in fall 2020. flocked to the Arboretum to get some much-needed Nature RX, the grounds needed the support of our community, and these volunteers really came through! With no Gifts & Greens Galore in December, the Foundation staff adapted by launching an online version of the Mary Ellen Mulder Gift Shop, offering curbside pickup from the Graham Visitors Center (arboretumfoundationshop.square.site). Support from The Arboretum Units The Arboretum Foundation Units continued to be a source of strength and resilience throughout a very difficult year, and we appreciate their ongoing work to support the Arboretum Foundation in unique ways. As always, the Units were able to adapt to the times, and over the past year they held online Zoom events, meetings, and even a few fundraisers for the Foundation! Our Events & Corporate Sponsorship Manager Tess Forté is now the liaison between the Foundation and the Units, ensuring open lines of communication and that ongoing records of Unit activity are kept. Special thanks to Units 5, 26, 1-75, and 80 for their generous gifts to the Spring Forward! gala (see page 6). Unit 16’s sponsorship of the gala contributed to its success. A gift of $5,000 from Unit 86 helped fund the restoration of the Seattle Japanese Garden’s central pond. And Unit 69 held their spring “Friday Flowers” sale in April and May, 2021, raising over $600 for the Arboretum. 10 The online Gift Shop will continue, however, we were delighted to welcome back our Shop volunteers in early April 2021, when the Visitors Center reopened. This provided impetus for the reopening of our Plant Donations Nursery in late April and the Pat Calvert Greenhouse in mid-May! Things look a little bit different now than before the pandemic, but it feels a lot more like our Arboretum again, with the volunteers back in action, taking care of plants and welcoming visitors. On April 24, 2021, we brought back Earth Day at the Arboretum. Putting our focus on safety, we co-hosted a small-but-mighty work-service event with UW Botanic Gardens and the Student Conservation Association. Sixty Propagating Plants: Pat Calvert Greenhouse volunteer volunteers worked on five restoration Jim Olson helping prep for reopening in May 2021. projects spread out in the Arboretum and accomplished a lot. Their weeding, mulching, and planting helped set the stage for a beautiful spring season in the park. At our virtual Annual Meeting in June of 2020, we honored Sherrey Leutjen with our Volunteer Legacy Award for her longstanding and passionate commitment to the Arboretum Foundation. Sherrey’s tenure included nine years on the Board of Directors and countless leadership positions, such as Board President and chairing our Opening Night Party Committee. In August 2020, without being able to gather in person for our joint annual Volunteer Appreciation Party, the Arboretum Foundation and UW Botanic Gardens tried something new! During your 60 years, you have seen moments of emotion of all kinds. Some people came to take wedding photos; others came to reflect the loss of loved ones. There were many who came to admire your beauty; there were those who sought solace in your tranquility. You provide answers to all questions; and you cast questions over all answers. You will remain the boundless recipient of all human feelings because you are so welcoming to all. I wish you will always remain the same; important things stay above the restlessness of modern life. —Yoichiro Yamada, Consul General of Japan June 5, 2020 marked the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Seattle Japanese Garden. In Japan, the 60th year of life is called “kanreki” and is celebrated as a rebirth or re-entry into childhood. This auspicious anniversary seems especially fitting for our garden, which is constantly renewing. However, when you consider that many of the most famous Japanese gardens are hundreds of years old, our anniversary feels more like a graduation out of childhood rather than a re-entry! The Covid-19 pandemic put a big complication into all our anniversary plans, as the Garden closed for several months in the spring and summer of 2020, before re-opening in July. Despite the closure and our inability to host on-site public events after reopening,

Kaleidoscope Series: A sample of the Instagram posts we created to advertise our online webinars.

12 we were able to make the most of virtual programming to celebrate all season long. Many community members shared their memories of the Garden through social media. Our Kaleidoscope series presented webinars on maple pruning, butoh dancing, traditional calligraphy, and more. We also co- hosted an online art exhibit with the Miller Library entitled “Seeing Seeds Stories.” It featured commissioned work from five local artists who each expressed their own narrative about the Garden space and what makes visiting it so special. We hope to host an on-site version of the exhibit in the near future. One of the most special moments of celebration was on October 5, 2020, when a small Ginkgo biloba sapling was planted just outside the Garden. This very special tree was gifted to us by Green Legacy Hiroshima, a conservation group dedicated to spreading a message of peace through the world by sharing the seeds from trees that survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the welcoming ceremony for the tree was limited to just a few speakers and volunteer organizers. Representatives from both Japan and Seattle gave speeches to honor the legacy of both the Seattle Japanese Garden and Green Legacy Hiroshima. The full video of the planting is available on the Seattle Japanese Garden’s blog, www.seattlejapanesegarden. org/blog, as are the videos for the Kaleidoscope series.
