The direct monologue of the story is the story of his life, which dialogues directly with his father – the writer – and the reader. Unlike conventional autobiographies which narrate the developmental (procedural) course of the narrator (self- consciousness), Barth’s story concentrates on and deconstructs such dichotomies as narrator/story and writer/reader. Contra responsive to other meta-fictions which mainly challenge the authorial voice, this “self-begetting” story targets the reader and destabilizes his/her writer- like performance. Besides, Bakhtinian dialogism is deployed in order to show the inter-discursive quality of the story’s texture. Key words: John Barth, autobiography, meta-fiction, deconstruction, Bakhtinian dialogism Introduction John Barth is the American postmodern novelist and short story writer. Lost in the Funhouse (1963) is his collection of fourteen short stories which most blatantly deconstructs the conventions of short story. Barth’s experimentations with the genre of novel, short story, and language have led many critics to take him as a writer of meta-fiction. Comparatively, Barth’s novels have been the point of interest with most critics and only some have turned their attention to his short stories. Those who have written about his short stories have generally addressed his collection as a single entity, resituating it within Barth’s narrative enterprises. A critic like Charles A. S. Ernst (2004) takes Lost in the Funhouse as the manifestation of the writer’s biographical concourse. Ernst mainly works on the story titled “Night-Sea Journey” and shows how this story stands as the text-world and life-text of the author. Similarly, Evelyn Glaser- Wohrer (1977) argues this collection bears autobiographical traits. W. Todd Martin treats this collection as a novel, relying on Barth’s own note at the beginning of the 1981 edition where he Language in India www.languageinindia.com ISSN 1930-2940 14:10 October 2014 Dr. Abdulmomin Al-Rubaiee An Analysis of Barth’s Autobiography: A Self-Recorded Fiction as a Metafiction 2 states it is “neither a collection nor a selection, but a series . to have been meant to be received ‘all at once’ and here arranged”. (1981, p. vii) Alan Lindsay, likewise, numbers the collection among Barth’s novels. (1995, p. 3) Metafictionality Although the stories of Lost in the Funhouse share some basic postmodern and meta- fictional features, each cherishes its own meta-fictional status. The present analysis is concerned with “Autobiography: A Self-Recorded Fiction” in order to achieve two objectives. First, the paper approaches the story as a meta-fiction; second, there is an attempt to pinpoint that unlike most meta-fictional stories, “Autobiography” targets the reader and his/her active role and thereby implicitly restores the author to the text. The main argument is that “Autobiography” deconstructs not only Barth’s but also the reader’s authorial voice, hence Bakhtinian dialogism. Theoretical Framework With the postmodern hail to the context and its constructing role, the West has been experiencing an increasing social and cultural self-awareness. The post-War-II period is the era of meta-history and meta-criticism. Hayden White, the American historiographer, attempts to bridge the gap between history and fiction through his notion of meta-history. Meta-history is historical narrative on history and historiography. In the same vein, meta-criticism is criticism on criticism itself. This self-reflexivity is the inherent trend of postmodernism, which has emerged as the notions of autonomy and representation that have been de-defined. Language has come to be thought of as having a functional role in constructing and maintaining man’s sense of the “real” and “reality”. Beginning with Ferdinand de Saussure’s structuralist theories, language itself was seen as the problem, as a representational and communicational means. The Lacanian idea that man’s unconscious is a linguistic construct, put more emphasis on the key role of language.

It is not simply “a grammar and texts”, as the title proposes, but is rather a comprehensive documentation of a language or languages (I will return to this point), some features of which include an extensive literature review, a dialect survey, an explication of scripts and ceremonial-literary traditions, the current versions of three already very substantial dictionaries-in-progress (as well as a digitization of a previously unpublished dictionary by another author), a descriptive grammar, and a far larger body of fully analysed and annotated texts than is usually found in works of this kind, in addition to many helpful ancillary materials such as large colour photographs, detailed maps and consultant biographies. The sheer scale of Morey’s presentation is made possible through the inclusion of an ingeniously conceived and designed CD-ROM, which not only contains the full text of the bound presentation (replete with numerous links and clickable cross-references), but includes sound files for nearly every example, and every text, to which the author 141 142 Mark Post makes reference, as well as numerous materials (such as the dictionaries and text analyses) which are simply too extensive to include in a printed work of acceptable size and cost.

Learning system and material content were validated by experts. The data were collected using expert validation sheets, observations, questionnaires student and lecturer, and tests. The results showed the following things. (1) MOODLE learning system used in Fiction Appreciation learning has been validated by experts with good grades; (2) Students had positive responds to the MOODLE system developed; and (3) Blended learning based on Learning Moodle System (LMS) was very useful in improving the quality of lectures.     Situation Update Response to COVID-19 in Indonesia As of 18 January 2021 As of 18 January, the Indonesian Government has announced 917,015 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in all 34 provinces in Indonesia, with 144,798 active cases, 26,282 deaths, and 745,935 people that have recovered from the illness. The government has also reported 77,579 suspected cases. The number of confirmed daily positive cases of COVID-19 in Indonesia reached a new high during four consecutive days on 13-16 January since the first positive coronavirus case was announced by the Government in early March 2020. Total daily numbers were 11,278 confirmed cases on 13 January, 11,557 cases on 14 January, 12,818 cases on 15 January, and 14,224 cases on 16 January. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has declared the COVID-19 Vaccine by Sinovac as halal. The declaration was stipulated in a fatwa that was issued on 8 January. On 11 January, the Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) issued the emergency use authorization for the vaccine. Following these two decisions, the COVID-19 vaccination program in Indonesia began on 13 January, with the President of the Republic of Indonesia being first to be vaccinated. To control the increase in the number of cases of COVID-19, the Government has imposed restrictions on community activities from January 11 to 25. The restrictions are carried out for areas in Java and Bali that meet predetermined parameters, namely rates of deaths, recovered cases, active cases and hospitals occupancy. Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk mencari tahu tentang pengaruh antara citra destinasi, pengalaman, motivasi dan kualitas makanan terhadap niat kunjungan kembali wisatawan domestik ke Kota Batam. Objek dan sampel pada penelitian ini adalah wisatawan domestik yang pernah melakukan kunjungan ke kota Batam. Penelitian ini diteliti dengan menggunakan metode non-probability sampling. Total sampel responden yang akan diuji adalah sebanyak 372 data dengan mengunakan metode statistik yaitu metode regresi berganda. Pengujiaan pada penelitian ini mengunakan IBM SPSS Statistics 24. Hasil uji hipotesis menyatakan bahwa terdapat pengaruh antara citra destinasi, motivasi, pengalaman dan kualitas makanan terhadap niat kunjungan kembali.     Chapter 7 Income Inequality and Socioeconomic Segregation in Jakarta Deden Rukmana and Dinar Ramadhani Abstract Socioeconomic segregation has become a common phenomenon, both in the Global North and Global South, and highly relates to income inequality. The merging of these two notions affects the geography of residential areas which are based on the socio-occupational composition. This chapter focuses on the Jakarta Metropolitan Area (JMA). Not only is Jakarta the largest metropolitan area in South- east Asia, it is also one of the most dynamic. Batavia, the colonial capital of the former Dutch East Indies in the first half of the twentieth century, was a small urban area of approximately 150,000 residents. In the second half of the century, Batavia became Jakarta, a megacity of 31 million people and the capital of inde- pendent Indonesia was beset with most of the same urban problems experienced in twenty-first-century Southeast Asia, including poverty, income inequality, and socioeconomic segregation. This study aims to identify the correlation among income inequality, socioeconomic segregation, and other institutional and contextual factors which caused residential segregation in JMA. The analysis consists of two stages. First, we examine income inequality measured by the Gini Index as well as the occu- pational structure based on the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO). Second, we investigate residential segregation by using the Dissimilarity Index as a result of socioeconomic intermixing in residential areas. The data in this study comes from multiple sources including Indonesia’s Central Bureau of Statis- tics, Indonesia’s National Socio-economic Survey (Susenas), Indonesia’s Economic Census, Jakarta’s Regional Bureau of Statistics, and policies related to the housing system and investment in the JMA.

  • Indonesia's Sustainable Development Projects
    a INDONESIA’S SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS PREFACE Indonesia highly committed to implementing and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Under the coordination of the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, Indonesia has mainstreamed SDGs into National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) and elaborated in the Government Work Plan (RKP) annual budget documents. In its implementation, Indonesia upholds the SDGs principles, namely (i) universal development principles, (ii) integration, (iii) no one left behind, and (iv) inclusive principles. Achievement of the ambitious SDGs targets, a set of international commitments to end poverty and build a better world by 2030, will require significant investment. The investment gap for the SDGs remains significant. Additional long-term resources need to be mobilized from all resources to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In addition, it needs to be ensured that investment for the SDGs is inclusive and leaves no one behind. Indonesia is one of the countries that was given the opportunity to offer investment opportunities related to sustainable development in the 2019 Sustainable Development Goals Investment (SDGI) Fair in New York on April 15-17 2019. The SDGI Fair provides a platform, for governments, the private sectors, philanthropies and financial intermediaries, for “closing the SDG investment gap” through its focus on national and international efforts to accelerate the mobilization of sufficient investment for sustainable development. Therefore, Indonesia would like to take this opportunity to convey various concrete investment for SDGs. The book “Indonesia’s Sustainable Development Project” shows and describes investment opportunities in Indonesia that support the achievement of related SDGs goals and targets.
