Summer Weekend 20-22 July 2007 at Urchfont Manor The Take 20 Week end 2007 is at U rchfont Manor, near Devizes in Wiltshire. Urchfont is a small village in the green rolling countryside of Wiltshire. Although further from London than some of our other destinations, the house and grounds are beautiful. In the village there is a typical country pub within easy walking distance, and it is generally agreed that the food is excellent – Urchfont Manor even publish their own cookbook. We begin on Friday evening with supper and a free evening, followed by a full day on Saturday learning new repertoire. On Saturday evening we have traditionally put on a cabaret for each other – all contributions very welcome – featuring anything vocal from poems, arias, madrigals, barbershop and close harmony to instrumental solos and duets. Join in – it is a great opportunity to try things out on an enthusiastic audience. On Sunday morning we continue rehearsing and after lunch we have an informal ‘sing- through’ for a small local audience and visitors. Accommodation at Urchfont is divided between four buildings: the Manor House; the Coach photos from House, Seymour House and Fiddlers Cottage. Urchfont 2005 All rooms except the cottage have en-suite accommodation. Please can everyone who is coming return the booking form to Belinda as soon as possible, together with a £30 deposit or the full amount, stating your preferred accommodation (allocated on a ﬁrst come ﬁrst served basis). Further details regarding travel arrangements etc will be sent nearer the time, but please remember that Urchfont is approximately 90+ miles from London, so an early start on the Friday afternoon is advisable. I have taught 25 courses at Urchfont Manor over a span of 15 years. I have enjoyed working with committed students from the local community and beyond, backed up with superb care in a stunning landscape. I have never thought of the courses I teach at Urchfont Manor College as ‘holidays’, to me they are study weekends with students, people who are keen to learn and develop a skill. A study break at Urchfont Manor can be a life enriching experience, not only as a result of the learning on the course and the meeting and making of new friends, but also the impact of the environment in which this all takes place, the beautiful garden around the Manor, Oakfrith Wood and surrounding fields and delightful village. Urchfont Manor is a unique and outstanding place for adult education, development, training and learning. Closure would have a great impact on the local community. Reputations for continued excellence take years to achieve and maintain. It has been proven that adults learn more quickly in a residential, safe and secure environment, it would be a disaster if the residential adult education provided by Urchfont Manor was to be curtailed. Urchfont Manor can offer more than just a high standard of education, the situation is superb and the staff there are a dedicated team, the food is wholesome and considered by myself and my students as absolutely outstanding.

Page 309 – Point 4 - To continue the delivery of the councils’ policy to ensure all its property holdings are sustainable, fit for purpose, and represent value for money for Wiltshire residents, both now and in the future. 2. Page 312 – Para 12 - The current ‘traded’ service run from Urchfont has a projected £120,000 overspend for 2011/12. 3. Page 312 – Para 16 - In relation to Urchfont Manor, the disposal of this facility will result in a limited loss of revenue to local businesses. This will include provisions from the local farm and a potential loss of revenue to the local public house. Other services, such as grounds maintenance, are provided through the council’s Sodexho contract and so have little or no benefit to the local community. Depending on the future use of the building by a purchaser, it is possible that its disposal may, in the longer term, have a beneficial impact on the immediate local economy, but that is not possible to predict at this time. 4. Page 314 - Para 25 - In relation to Urchfont Manor, there are currently five weddings and one 90th birthday party with confirmed bookings in the period up to the end of August 2012. There are a small number of provisional bookings, which have yet to pay a deposit, after this date. Closure in September 2012 will allow all confirmed bookings to go ahead.

Stone-Curlew Recovery Project Location: Salisbury Plain, North Dorset and the Wiltshire Downs Initiated by the RSPB Project Origins RSPB research identified the causes of decline in the stone-curlew population in the 1980s. One major factor was accidental loss of eggs and young due to farming operations.Teams of fieldworkers were employed to find nests and liaise with farmers.This successfully halted the decline and the population started to increase.Another factor was the lack of suitable habitat for nesting and feeding. Case Study This is being addressed by encouraging farmers to provide set-aside and enter agri-environment 7 schemes.The UK Biodiversity Action Plan aims to increase the stone-curlew population to 300 pairs by 2010.There were 262 pairs in 2003. THE PREHISTORIC SOCIETY UK STUDY TOUR 2007: WILTSHIRE Monday 20th August – Friday 24th August 2007 Urchfont Manor, Urchfont, Devizes, Wiltshire, SN10 4RG, Tel. no. 01380 840495 www.urchfontmanor.co.uk This study tour will be based at Urchfont Manor in the Vale of Pewsey, located in the heart of Wiltshire. It is a scenic, peaceful, location for our Study Tour and provides us with easy access to some of the most outstanding prehistoric sites and landscapes in the British Isles. During the tour we will encounter a wide range of well preserved sites on the chalk downland that lies at the heart of Wiltshire, focussing specifically on the Avebury and Stonehenge World Heritage Site. As well as this we are fortunate to gain access to normally restricted areas on the Salisbury Plain military ranges. All of these areas have either seen recent investigation or are currently the subject of major, internationally significant, research. So, as well as the monumental complex at Avebury, we will visit the high profile work taking place at Stonehenge and Durrington Walls and include an evening visit to the ‘stones’. The tour will be rounded off in the Wylye Valley of South Wiltshire, an important routeway flanked by a variety of significant archaeological sites. Urchfont Manor, though in a rural position is easily reachable by car, lying some 3km to the south-east of the market town of Devizes at NGR SU 036570 just off the A342. There are relatively nearby train stations at Pewsey and Westbury; it may well be possible to arrange a pick up for those travelling by train.

ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012 www.urchfont-pc.gov.uk 1 CHAIRMAN’S REVIEW (Mrs. Nicky Mitchell) Life is never dull in Urchfont is it? In addition to all the usual items we have had to deal with over the course of the year, we had 2 major, contentious issues to consider: 1. The Development of Manor Farmyard reappeared in November, historically controversial; and 2. In January the news that Wiltshire Council had decided to sell Urchfont Manor. The impact of this news being twofold, firstly the loss of the Residential Adult Education College with the related economic implications for the village and secondly the potential threat to our community facilities which occupy part of the Manor estate. This year I feel I must begin my report by highlighting our volunteer Parish Councillors. They have put in a particularly enormous amount of work due to these 2 major issues arising within a very short space of time requiring our immediate action as well as the general running of Parish business. When you look at the display boards and listen to the Chairmen’s reports to come, you may not realize the time and effort that goes into it all. Our thanks go in particular to Liz Clifton-Page for updating the photos in the display for this year. Have you ever thought what would happen if we didn’t have a Parish Council? How would all these things be accomplished and issues be coordinated? Many are statutory requirements but many are to deal with our own Parish requirements, requests from you, the residents, to improve our facilities.

Both economic and political factors have been at play and, depending on the location and the price bracket, some quite different trends are emerging. They include strong price growth in the higher reaches of the prime property market in and around London, and a drop in sales and value among homes affected by this year’s change in stamp duty rates. Any review of 2012 needs to start with a look at the broader economic picture. Disappointing news towards the end of 2012 saw the IMF dramatically downgrade its forecasts for the UK and predict that the economy would shrink by 0.4%. This was offset, though, by IMF expectations of 1.1% growth for 2013. Any sense of optimism has remained cautious, however, and this is being reflected in both the current performance of the UK residential market and its outlook for the year ahead.
