Introduction We discuss some topics on the Yang-Mills equations. We first develop some of the geomet- ric background needed to understand the statement of the equation; namely, the notions of a connection, curvature, and the Hodge star operator. We then state the equation and briefly discuss gauge transformations. As an aside, which is interesting from a physics standpoint, we derive the Maxwell’s equations from the Yang-Mills framework. Since Yang-Mills theory is a generalization of Hodge theory, we spend some time carefully proving the Hodge theorem. We conclude by investigating the Yang-Mills equations over a compact four-manifold and discuss selfdual and antiselfdual instantons. The majority of these notes were written while following Jost’s Riemannian Geometry and Geometric Analysis [1], with some inspiration from more physics-oriented texts such as [2]. The last section was written while following [4]. The prerequisites are graduate level courses in smooth manifolds and partial differential equations. The Einstein summation convention is always assumed. 1 2 2. Connections and Curvature In this section, we explore connections on vector bundles. Let π : E → M to be a vector bundle of rank n over a smooth manifold M. We use the notation Γ(E) to denote the set of smooth sections σ : M → E of the vector bundle E. In the case E = T M, we have that σ ∈ Γ(T M) is a smooth vector field on M. A connection on a vector bundle in a generalization of the directional derivative in Rd. The precise definition is the following: Definition 2.1. Let M be a smooth manifold, and π : E → M a vector bundle. A connection on E is a map D : Γ(T M) × Γ(E) → Γ(E), (X, σ) 7→ DX σ such that for any τ, σ ∈ Γ(E), X,Y ∈ Γ(T M), and f ∈ C∞(M), the following four properties hold: (1) DX+Y σ = DX σ + DY σ, (2) DfX σ = fDX σ, (3) DX (σ + τ)= DX σ + DX τ, (4) DX (fσ)= X(f)σ + fDX σ. Rule (4) is called the Leibniz rule. We start by investigating the local properties of D. Given any point q ∈ M, by the definition of a vector bundle, there exists a neighbourhood U containing q and a diffeomorphism Φ : π−1(U) → U ×Rn that acts linearly on the fibers. (Φ is called a local n trivialization.) If {e1,...,en} is the standard basis of R , we obtain local sections εi : M → E, −1 εi(p) = Φ (p, ei) such that at each p ∈ U, {εi(p)} forms a basis of the fiber Ep. Its importance lies in the fact that given a piecewise continuous curve connecting two points on the manifold, the connection defines a linear isomorphism between the respective tangent spaces at these points. Another fundamental concept in the study of differential geometry is that of a metric, which provides a measure of distance on the manifold. It is well known that a metric uniquely determines a Levi-Civita connection: a symmetric connection for which the metric is parallel. Not all connections are derived from a metric and so it is natural to ask, for a symmetric connection, if there exists a parallel metric, that is, whether the connection is a Levi-Civita connection. More generally, a connection on a manifold M, symmetric or not, is said to be metric if there exists a parallel metric defined on M.

    A GEOMETRIC TRAPPING APPROACH TO GLOBAL REGULARITY FOR 2D NAVIER-STOKES ON MANIFOLDS AYNUR BULUT AND KHANG MANH HUYNH Abstract. In this paper, we use frequency decomposition techniques to give a direct proof of global existence and regularity for the Navier-Stokes equations on two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds without boundary. Our techniques are inspired by an approach of Mattingly and Sinai [15] which was developed in the context of periodic boundary conditions on a flat background, and which is based on a maximum principle for Fourier coefficients. The extension to general manifolds requires several new ideas, connected to the less favorable spectral localization properties in our setting. Our argu- ments make use of frequency projection operators, multilinear estimates that originated in the study of the non-linear Schr¨odingerequation, and ideas from microlocal analysis. 1. Introduction The goal of these lectures is to explain the existence of special structures on the coho- mology of Kahler manifolds, namely, the Hodge decomposition and the Lefschetz decom- position, and to discuss their basic properties and consequences. A Kahler manifold is a complex manifold equipped with a Hermitian metric whose imaginary part, which is a 2-form of type (1,1) relative to the complex structure, is closed. This 2-form is called the Kahler form of the Kahler metric. Smooth projective complex manifolds are special cases of compact Kahler manifolds. As complex projective space (equipped, for example, with the Fubini-Study metric) is a Kahler manifold, the complex submanifolds of projective space equipped with the induced metric are also Kahler.     DIRAC OPERATORS FOR MATRIX ALGEBRAS CONVERGING TO COADJOINT ORBITS MARC A. RIEFFEL Abstract. In the high-energy physics literature one finds statements such as “matrix algebras converge to the sphere”. Earlier I provided a general precise setting for understanding such statements, in which the matrix algebras are viewed as quantum metric spaces, and convergence is with respect to a quantum Gromov-Hausdorff-type distance. But physicists want even more to treat structures on spheres (and other spaces), such as vector bundles, Yang-Mills functionals, Dirac operators, etc., and they want to approximate these by corresponding structures on matrix algebras. In the present paper we provide a somewhat unified construction of Dirac operators on coadjoint orbits and on the matrix algebras that converge to them. This enables us to prove our main theorem, whose content is that, for the quantum metric-space structures determined by the Dirac operators that we construct, the matrix algebras do indeed converge to the coadjoint orbits, for a quite strong version of quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance. This article is an open access publication Abstract We elaborate on the construction of a prequantum 2-Hilbert space from a bundle gerbe over a 2-plectic manifold, providing the first steps in a programme of higher geometric quantisation of closed strings in flux compactifications and of M5- branes in C-fields. We review in detail the construction of the 2-category of bundle gerbes and introduce the higher geometrical structures necessary to turn their cate- gories of sections into 2-Hilbert spaces. We work out several explicit examples of 2-Hilbert spaces in the context of closed strings and M5-branes on flat space. We also work out the prequantum 2-Hilbert space associated with an M-theory lift of closed strings described by an asymmetric cyclic orbifold of the SU(2) WZW model, pro- viding an example of sections of a torsion gerbe on a curved background. We describe the dimensional reduction of M-theory to string theory in these settings as a map from 2-isomorphism classes of sections of bundle gerbes to sections of corresponding line bundles, which is compatible with the respective monoidal structures and module actions.
