Congratulations to Christina Andrews on her Chrismation into the Orthodox church yesterday, January 30, before the Divine Liturgy on the Feast Day of the Synaxis of the three Hierarchs: Saint Basil the Great, Saint Gregory the Theologian, and Saint John Chrysostom. May God Grant Christina, her husband Matthew, and her sponsoring godparents, Jennifer Cantrell and Daniel Herbert, Many Healthy and Blessed Years! ***************************************************************************************************** As a result of the new Covid restrictions set by City of Philadelphia officials, the following changes will occur at the parish until at least the end of February 2021: * NO coffee hour after services; * NO Sunday school in church basement (ZOOM classes to be held instead); and * Father will serve a Saturday Divine Liturgy for those who wish to attend Liturgy in a smaller gathering. Now, if the Saturday Divine Liturgy attendance reaches levels near the maximum restriction amount, the parish may…repeat may, split the parishioners into two grouping with one group attending on Saturday and the other attending on Sunday. ***************************************************************************************************** CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS! SAVE YOUR CHRISTMAS CARDS! Please save your Christmas cards this year. Matushka Janine and the Charity Committee are collecting Christmas cards to send to the troops for next year. They will use the front cover and paste it on a new card, write an appropriate verse on the inside of the card, and address the card to our soldiers. Please consider donating your cards you received this year. Please see Matushka Janine as to where to drop off your Christmas cards at a designated area in the church basement, or whether she will collect them directly. As always, thank you for your generosity! This year we collected and sent out just under 600 cards for our troops! ***************************************************************************************************** 2021 House Blessing If you wish to have your home blessed, please speak with Father Mark for date availability to schedule a house blessing. The blessing of houses will begin after Theophany, which is Wednesday, January 6. Items of importance when having your home blessed: 1) have a candle available to be burned during the house blessing, 2) a bowl of blessed holy water, 3) an icon (preferably the icon of Christ being baptized in the Jordan River), and 4) please make enough space for Father Mark to maneuver in the rooms you wish him to bless. He was a Christian and he treated the sick without charge, not only curing their bodily afflictions, but also healing their spiritual infirmities. He would say, “Whoever wishes to avoid being ill should refrain from sin, for sin is often the cause of bodily illness.” Preaching the Gospel, the holy physician converted many pagans to Christ. During the persecution by Diocletian (284-305), St Cyrus withdrew into Arabia, where he became a monk. He continued to heal people by his prayer, having received from God the gift to heal every sickness. In the city of Edessa at this time lived the soldier John, a pious Christian. When the persecution started, he went to Jerusalem and there he heard about St Cyrus. He began to search for him, going first to Alexandria and then to Arabia. When St John finally found St Cyrus, he remained with him and became his faithful follower. They learned of the arrest of the Christian woman Athanasia and her three young daughters.

At the age of thirteen, he was baptized and began to search for Christian philosophy. In the year 155, when Emperor Antoninus Pius started to persecute Christians, Saint Justin personally gave him an apology in defense of two Christians who were innocently condemned to execution. When he arrived in Rome to debate with Crescentius, who he had always beaten, he found that there were many false accu- sations against him brought to the court and Saint Justin was imprisoned on false charges. He was killed in the year 165. June 1: Saint Dionysius of Glushitsa was one of the greatest ascetics of St. Petersburg, Russia. After being tonsured, he spent nine years in a monastery until he went to a remote area named Saint Luke. There he established a monastery dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Monks began to gather at the site and soon he needed to build another monastery. The saint fell ill on May 29, 1437, and died three days later on June 1 at the age of 74. June 2: Saint Nicephorus, Patriarch of Constantinople, was born in 758 and was raised reading the Holy Scriptures. He was pressured by the emperor Nicephorus to lead the imperial city’s main poorhouse. After four years, Saint Nicephorus was tonsured and became the Patriarch of Constantinople on April 12, 806. After Leo the Armenian took the throne, Saint Nicephorus was exiled and tortured for his beliefs.

    Explanation of the Proskomedia of the Divine Liturgy Praise be Jesus Christ! Let’s begin our class by praying to the Holy Spirit for inspiration and understanding. Today we are going to give an explanation of the Proskomedia which is the service of preparation before the actual beginning of the Divine Liturgy. Origin of the Proskomedia The name Proskomedia comes from the Greek word” proskomidzo,” which means “to bring” or” to offer.” In the Roman rite, the Proskomedia is known as the Offertory. The Proskomedia is the cere- mony of offering and bringing the bread and wine to the table of oblation or preparation table called the Prothesiis. Later on, at the consecration of the Liturgy particles of bread will be changed into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. The origin of the Proskomedia goes back to apostolic times. It was part of the very ancient form of the Divine liturgy, although not in the same arrangement as we know it today. It developed from an old Christian custom of bringing offerings for the celebration of the Liturgy. The oldest liturgical manuscripts about the Proskomedia relates that this was a simple ceremony of bringing bread and wine for offering at the altar. In the eleven century, this simple ceremony grew into an enriched rite of preparation where prayers and symbolic actions were added to commemorate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the Holy Mother of God, the saints, the living and the dead. The origin of the commemoration of the living and the dead goes back to the early centuries of Christianity where the Christians of the first century prayed for each other and held their dead brethren, especially their martyrs, in great honor and respect.

Forty days after His birth the God-Infant was taken to the Jerusalem Temple, the center of the nation’s religious life. According to the Law of Moses (Lev. 12:2-8), a woman who gave birth to a male child was forbidden to en- ter the Temple of God for forty days. At the end of this time the mother came to the Temple with the child, to offer a young lamb or pigeon to the Lord as a purification sacrifice. The Most Holy Virgin, the Mother of God, had no need of purification, since she had given birth to the Source of purity and sanctity without defilement.
