Richter Secretary for 2007-2008. ❊ THE CITY BAR JUSTICE CENTER HELD ITS SECOND ANNUAL GALA ON April 18. The event honored Skadden, Arps, Slate,Meagher & Flom and Time Warner Inc. with the City Bar Justice Award for their leadership and dedication to public service. Accepting on behalf of Skadden, Arps was Robert C. Sheehan, Execu- tive Partner. Paul T. Cappuccio, Executive Vice President and General Counsel, accepted on behalf of Time Warner. Co-chairs for the evening were Rose- mary T. Berkery, Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Merrill Lynch & Co. and Robert D. Joffe, Partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore. To help mark the event, hundreds of lights transformed the City Bar’s historic 1897 landmark building into a modern New York lounge. The event raised more than $750,000 to support the wide range of programs and services of the City Bar Justice Center, the pro bono affili- ate of the New York City Bar. By harnessing resources from the legal pro- fession, the City Bar Justice Center annually provides direct legal repre- sentation, information and advocacy to nearly 30,000 individuals from all five boroughs. ❊ THE NEW YORK CITY BAR’S ENHANCE DIVERSITY COMMITTEE PRESENTED the second annual Diversity Champion Award at an Award Ceremony, June 7, at the Association. The award recognizes the critical role individu- als have played in initiating and sustaining change within their organi- zations and the overall New York legal community. The award seeks to honor individuals who embody the New York City Bar’s Statement of Diversity Principles. Nominations are limited to attorneys, although it is not necessary that they be actively practicing law. The honorees for 2007 are: Sharon Bowen, Vice Chair of the Latham & Watkins Diversity Committee; Laurie Robinson, founder and CEO of Corporate Counsel Women of Color and a practicing employment lawyer in CBS Broadcasting’s legal department; Zakiyyah Salim, Associate, Heller Ehrman LLP, and a member of the firmwide diversity and New York office hiring committees; and Hon. John Stackhouse, New York County Supreme Court Justice, and Co-Director of the Supreme Court Civil Division Anti- Bias Committee, charged with the court’s internal diversity efforts. T H E R E C O R D 230 O F N O T E Susan Kohlmann, Co-Chair of the Enhance Diversity in the Profes- sion Committee, presented the awards. The awards are sponsored by the City Bar’s Office for Diversity and the Committee to Enhance Diversity in the Profession, and the winners were selected by the Committee to En- hance Diversity in the Profession (Susan J. Kohlmann and Elipidio Villarreal, Co-Chairs). ❊ TWO OUTSTANDING LAW STUDENTS HAVE BEEN AWARDED THURGOOD Marshall Fellowships for the 2007-2008 academic year. The program provides two exceptional minority students from New York area law schools the opportunity to work with the Association to advance the goals of civil rights and equal justice. Fellowships have been awarded to Shuva Paul of CUNY School of Law and Johane Severin of Brooklyn Law School. Mr. Paul will assist the Association’s Civil Rights Committee and Ms. Severin will work with the City Bar Justice Center. The fellowships are funded by the Orison S. Marden Lecture Fund. Fellows were nominated by their schools and selected by the Association’s Committee on the Thurgood Marshall Fellowship Program (Ira M. Feinberg, Chair). ❊ THE ANNUAL PRESENTATION OF THE HENRY L. STIMSON MEDAL TO outstanding Assistant United States Attorneys in the Southern District and in the Eastern District of New York was held on June 12 at the Asso- ciation. Hon. Gerard E. Lynch, United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York, made opening remarks, and Barry M. Kamins, Presi- dent of the Association, presented the medals. This year’s recipients are: Celeste L. Koeleveld (Criminal Division) and Sheila A. Gowan (Civil Division) of the Southern District, and Richard P. Donoghue (Criminal Division) and Scott A. Dunn (Civil Division) of the Eastern District. The Stimson Medal, made possible by the firm of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, honors Mr. Stimson, who served as United States At- torney for the Southern District from 1906-1909 during a career of distin- guished public service. D. Cornell University 2009 Commentators have frequently suggested that India is going through an “age of intolerance” as writers, artists, filmmakers, scholars and journalists among others have been targeted by institutions of the state as well as political parties and interest groups for hurting the sentiments of some section of Indian society. However, this age of intolerance has coincided with a period that has also been characterized by the “deepening” of Indian democracy, as previously subordinated groups have begun to participate more actively and substantively in democratic politics. This project is an attempt to understand the reasons for the persistence of illiberalism in Indian politics, particularly as manifest in censorship practices. It argues that one of the reasons why censorship has persisted in India is that having the “right to censor” has come be established in the Indian constitutional order’s negotiation of multiculturalism as a symbol of a cultural group’s substantive political empowerment. This feature of the Indian constitutional order has made the strategy of “seeking offense” readily available to India’s politicians, who understand it to be an efficacious way to discredit their competitors’ claims of group representativeness within the context of democratic identity politics.

The remedies include fast-tracking the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) and easing of FDI (foreign direct investment) regulations in aviation and other sectors. Addressing a press conference on 5th June 2012, CII President, Adi B. Godrej, said that the primary concern for the nation was its GDP growth rate which was a mere 5.37 per cent in the last quarter was lowest in nine years. Some of the important reform to improve GDP growth as suggested by him are - early introduction of GST, the Government and the RBI inclusion of a strong monetary stimulus, correcting the current account deficit by encouraging exports and containing imports, arresting rupee slide, reducing subsidies, implementing financial sector reforms and removing bottlenecks in infrastructure growth. 06 Venus Transits between Sun and Earth June World > Space Planet Venus passed directly between the Sun and Earth on 6 June 2012, an astronomical rarity that sky watchers were eager to witness. Address Informing the Public about the U.S. Supreme Court's Work Ruth Bader Ginsburg* My remarks this afternoon concern informing the public about the work the Supreme Court does. I will speak of efforts simply to describe the Court's actions (both in-house efforts and press reports), and also of feedback on the Court's dispositions-comment on, or criticism of, the Court's work from people who keep us alert to our fallibility, reviewers who stimulate us to try harder, especially to write more comprehensibly. I. The Court speaks primarily through its opinions. It holds no press conferences and its members appear on no talk shows. But we try, in several ways, to advance public understanding of the Court's role and judgments. On mornings when decisions are announced, opinion authors read aloud in the Courtroom short bench statements, running three to ten minutes in length, summarizing what the Court held and the principal reasons for the decision.

I have the honor and privilege of being the Dean of Fordham University School of Law. I sense the anticipation in this room is palpable. We are all incredibly excited to be here, and I want to welcome you to tonight’s Robert L. Levine Distinguished Lecture. Robert L. Levine, as your notes describe in more detail, was a member of the Fordham Law School great Class of 1926 and practiced law for sixty- two years. Before we begin the program, I would like to just say a few words of thanks and acknowledgement. We are grateful to the Levine family, who join us here this evening, for making this lecture possible. Because of their generosity, Fordham Law has been able to host many distinguished guests for this series, including Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the late great Judge Judith Kaye, Judge Robert Katzmann, Judge Raymond Lohier, and of course our illustrious guest tonight, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I would like to thank our President of Fordham University, Father Joseph McShane, and our Provost, Dr. Stephen Freedman, who join us here this evening. I would also like to acknowledge my colleague, Dean Emerita Nina Appel of Loyola University Chicago, who has made a special trip here this evening to be with her good friend Justice Ginsburg. Tehelka investigators had captured on spy camera the president of the BJP, Bangaru Laxman, the Samata Party president, Jaya Jaitly (described as the ‘Second Defence Minister’ by one of the middlemen interviewed on videotape), and several top Defence Ministry officials accepting money, or showing willingness to accept money for defence deals. · This they had managed to do through a sting operation named Operation West End, posing as representatives of a fictitious UK based arms manufacturing firm. · Tehelka claims it paid out Rs. 10,80,000 in bribes to a cast of 34 characters. · Among the shots forming part of the four-and-a-half hour documentary are those of Bangaru Laxman accepting one lakh and asking for the promised five lakhs in dollars! He did not deny accepting the money. Bangaru Laxman resigns as BJP president. · Even before screening of the tapes at a press conference at a leading hotel here was over, the issue rocked both Houses of Parliament forcing their adjournment with the opposition demanding an immediate government statement on the issue. · The Union government says it is prepared for an inquiry into the tehelka.com expose of the alleged involvement of top politicians and government officials in corrupt defence deals. At an emergency Union Cabinet meeting George Fernandes reportedly offers to resign but the offer is rejected by the Prime Minister.
