“Consider the Source” A Resource Guide to Liberal, Conservative and Nonpartisan Periodicals 30 East Lake Street ∙ Chicago, IL 60601 HWC Library – Room 501 312.553.5760 ver heard the saying “consider the source” in response to something that was questioned? Well, the same advice applies to what you read – consider the source. When conducting research, bear in mind that periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers) may have varying points-of-view, biases, and/or E political leanings. Here are some questions to ask when considering using a periodical source: Is there a bias in the publication or is it non-partisan? Who is the sponsor (publisher or benefactor) of the publication? What is the agenda of the sponsor – to simply share information or to influence social or political change? Some publications have specific political perspectives and outright state what they are, as in Dissent Magazine (self-described as “a magazine of the left”) or National Review’s boost of, “we give you the right view and back it up.” Still, there are other publications that do not clearly state their political leanings; but over time have been deemed as left- or right-leaning based on such factors as the points- of-view of their opinion columnists, the make-up of their editorial staff, and/or their endorsements of politicians. Many newspapers fall into this rather opaque category. A good rule of thumb to use in determining whether a publication is liberal or conservative has been provided by Media Research Center’s L. Brent Bozell III: “if the paper never met a conservative cause it didn’t like, it’s conservative, and if it never met a liberal cause it didn’t like, it’s liberal.” Outlined in the following pages is an annotated listing of publications that have been categorized as conservative, liberal, non-partisan and religious.

INTRODUCTION On May 8, 1997, the Supreme Court of Washington decided Nelson v. McClatchy Newspapers.1 The Court determined that a state law prohibiting employment discrimination based upon an employee's polit- ical conduct could not be constitutionally applied to newspaper publishers.2 This case presented a conflict between two well-established, but polar principles in First Amendment jurisprudence.3 The plaintiff, for- mer Tacoma News Tribune (hereinafter referred to as "the Tribune") reporter Sandra Nelson, argued that the free press has "no special immu- nity from the application of general laws" and, therefore, is prohibited from engaging in employment discrimination.4 Conversely, the defend- ant, McClatchy Newspapers, maintained that the First Amendment shields newspaper publishers from statutory interference with their con- trol of editorial content.5 1.

IN THE UNITED STATES BANKRUPTCY COURT FOR THE EASTERN DISTRICT OF PENNSYLVANIA IN RE:: CHAPTER 11 : PHILADELPHIA NEWSPAPERS, LLC, ET AL : CASE NO. 09-11204 SR : DEBTOR(S): JOINTLY ADMINISTERED OPINION BY: STEPHEN RASLAVICH, CHIEF UNITED STATES BANKRUPTCY JUDGE. Introduction Before the Court is the Debtors’ Motion For an Order Rejecting Asset Purchase Agreement and Related Agreements Between Certain of the Debtors and the McClatchy Company (McClatchy).1 The Motion is opposed. After hearing held November 17, 2009, the Court took the matter under advisement. For the reasons which follow, the Motion will be granted. Background Because the parties are in agreement as to what are most of the salient facts, little, if any, in the way of documentary or testimonial evidence was offered. The following is established by their pleadings: that the parties entered into an Asset Purchase Agreement (APA) in May 2006 (Motion, ¶ 7; Response, ¶ 2); that under the APA the Debtors assumed certain liabilities of McClatchy (Motion ¶ 7, Response ¶ 3); 1The Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors has filed a Joinder to the Motion. In it, they have included their own proposed form of Order with suggested revisions to the Debtors’ proposed Order. The Court finds the Committee’s Order to be satisfactory and will enter it. that at the time of the sale, McClatchy had workers compensation insurance in place (Motion ¶ 9, Response ¶ 3); that the Debtors assumed liability for pre-existing workers compensation claims on those policies (Motion ¶ 9; Response ¶ 4); that although the Debtors assumed that liability, McClatchy remained listed as the insured on those policies (Id.); that McClatchy has continued to pay those “historical” claims (Id.); and that the Debtors routinely reimbursed McClatchy through the petition date but not thereafter.

  • 092508 but He's a Muslim!
"But He's a Muslim!" | HuffPost US EDITION THE BLOG 09/25/2008 05:12 am ET | Updated May 25, 2011 “But He’s a Muslim!” By Marty Kaplan It made me think of my own family. Having coined “O’Bama” for the Irish working-class values that Joe Biden brings to the Democratic ticket, Chris Matthews called his family in Pennsylvania — where Scranton-born Biden is known as the state’s “third senator” in some quarters — to ask whether now they’d be voting for Obama. “But he’s a Muslim!” That’s the reply Matthews told his viewers he got. The Matthews clan is not alone. Going into the Democratic National Convention, depending on which poll you read, somewhere between 10 percent and 15 percent of American voters thought that Obama is a Muslim. A Newsweek poll found that 26 percent thought he was raised as a Muslim (untrue), and 39 percent thought he grew up going to an Islamic school in Indonesia (also untrue). I’m not shocked by Americans’ ability to think untrue things. After all, under the relentless tutelage of the Bush administration and its media enablers, nearly 70 percent of the country thought that Saddam Hussein was personally involved in planning the Sept. 11 attack. In fact, if you told me that double-digit percentages of voters believe that Jewish workers were warned to stay home on Sept. 11, or that the American landing on the moon was faked, or that every one of the words of the Bible is literally and absolutely true, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised.

People often express opinions that offend others. But the First Amendment protects virtually all of those opinions, even offensive and hurtful ones, to promote a greater good: robust political discourse. The price of free speech is putting up with all sorts of name-calling and hurtful rhetoric. 2 C.M. is a politically vocal boy. He claims that a Newsweek article tarred him, at age twelve, by accusing him of “defending raw racism and sexual abuse.” Appendix, infra, p. 12 (Newsweek’s pagination). But the article contained derogatory opinions based only on disclosed facts, which are not enough to show defamation or false light.

  • Hello, and Welcome to Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, NY
Hello, and welcome to Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, NY. Our museum features a wide variety of American art, including folk art, fine art, American Indian art, and photography. This fall, the Fenimore is fortunate to be showcasing the special exhibit, Pete Souza: Two Presidents, One Photographer. Pete Souza was the official White House photographer for two extremely influential presidents on opposite ends of the political spectrum: Republican Ronald Reagan, our 40th president from 1981 to 1989, and Democrat Barack Obama, our 44th president and first African American president, from 2009 to 2016. Souza had unprecedented access while photographing these two men, recording moments that were central not only to their own lives but to the history of the United States and even the entire world. In this program, we'll explore some of these photographs and dig deeper into the moments they capture. Before his life as a politician, Ronald Reagan was an actor in Hollywood, playing parts in many films in the 1940s and 1950s. He became more and more politically active, and in 1967 he was elected Governor of California as a Republican. He remained in this position until 1975 and the next year he made his first attempt to run for president but he would have to wait for the 1980 campaign for it to become a reality, defeating Jimmy Carter handily in the electoral vote, carrying 44 of the 50 states. Pete Souza became one of Reagan's official white house photographers in 1983, and soon afterwards he found himself recording the events after the deadliest attack against US Marines since world war two.
