Overview of Maidstone Hickmotts

To date we have only accessed the Maidstone All Saints registers and a few others covered by LDS. No Hickmotts found in the registers in the 1500s. Virtually all Hickmotts appearing in the registers in the 1600s and the first half of the 1700s were not from Maidstone. The first local Hickmott to appear in the Maidstone All Saints register was Susannah Hickmott who married Edward Gorman there in 1750. No further Hickmotts appeared in the registers until 1756 with the burial there of Mary Hickmott the infant daughter of Richard and Mary Hickmott (nee Sweetman who were married at Boughton-Monchelsea in 1755).

The decade 1770-81 saw three Hickmotts married at Maidstone. We think that two of these – Henry Hickmott who married Mary Nowell in 1779 and Walter who married Anne Bishop(e) in 1781 – were born at Horsmonden, the sons of William and Elizabeth Hickmott nee Walter (who were married at Horsmonden in 1739). Henry and Mary had two girls – Mary and Harriet Foster Hickmott – baptized at Maidstone before Henry’s probable death there in 1790 (we suspect that Mary re-married the following year). Walter and Ann had six children at Maidstone, only two of whom survived childhood: Mary Ann (1788) and James (1806). We further suspect that another son of William and Elizabeth, Leonard Hickmott, married Mary Maynard at Cranbrook in 1789 but later lived at (on the northern outskirts of Maidstone) where he had at leat two children: Elizabeth Walter (1791) and Anna Hickmott (1795). A further son, Thomas Hickmott, may have married Esther Cook at Yalding in 1774 and had five children there: Walter (1775), Thomas (1779), Henry (1781), Leonard (1786), James (1789). Some of these would later live at Maidstone.

05 May 1706 Stephen HICKMOTT/Ann RELFE Marden igi The Marden History Group index of baptisms shows that an Ann Relfe was baptized at St Michael’s and All Angels Church on 20 July 1684. The LDS index shows that her parents were William and Jane Relfe (nee Cooper) who were married at Wadhurst in 1672. Stephen may have been born at Tenteden in 1688, the son of Henry Hickmott and Ann Seath or he may have been born at Horsmonden in 1677, the son of Thomas Hickmott and Mary Masters. We don’t know if Stephen and Ann had any children.

14 Jun 1713 John HICKMOTT/Ann(e) RUSSELL both of Horsmonden East Farleigh igi John was born at Horsmonden in around 1684, son of Thomas Hickmott and Mary Masters. Ann(e) was born at Horsmonden in 1697, dau of Stephen and Anne Russell. As joint executor of his father’s will, John was given sole access to eighty acres of land known as the ‘Kettles’ as well as joint access to two pieces of land known as

3 Castoins Field and the Great Tutchburys all said to be in the vicinity of Horsemonden and Lamberhurst. This may have facilitated his move, in around 1722, from Horsemonden to Lamberhurst where their last eight children were baptised. Known children: Susan (1714), John (1716), Thomas (1718), William (1720), Anne (1722), Mary (1724-5), Joseph (1726), Russell (1728), Richard (1729), Mary (1731), Timothy (1732), Elizabeth (1733), Elizabeth (1736). John died at Lamberhurst in 1750 and Anne there in 1754.

03 Apr 1714 William HICKMUT (w) / Sarah YEOMANS (w) both of Yalding West Farleigh reg William may have been known as William of ‘Bockenfold’ or ‘Buckingfielday’. We think he was previously married to Alice Tyler and had the following children with her: Thomas (1698, Brenchley), William (1700, Brenchley), Ann (1701 Brenchley), Mary (1703, Brenchley), Martha (1705-8, Horsmonden), William John (1706, Horsmonden), Stephen (1708, Horsmonden) and Frances (1710, Horsmonden). Alice died and was buried at Horsmonden in 1712. William and Sarah probably had at least two children baptised at Horsmonden - William (in 1715) and James (1715).

04 Oct 1736 John HICKMOTT/Hannah FINCETT Hunton Kent igi We think that John was born at in 1693, the second son of Richard Hickmott and Mercy Beechin. The local parish registers show that he and Hannah had two children baptized at Yalding - Alice in 1737 and Anne (1738/9) – and a number at Goudhurst: Elizabeth (1746), Obedience (1747), Richard (1749), Thomas 1751), Ceelia (1754).

03 Feb 1756 Alice HICKMOTT/William STARNES botp Yalding reg (Wit: John Hickmott, Wm Humphrey). We think Alice was born at Yalding in 1737, the eldest daughter of John Hickmott and Hannah Fincett. The local parish registers show they lived at Yalding after their marriage and had the following children baptized there: William (1759- 73), Alice (1763), William H. (1766) and Mary (1774). There is no record of their burials at Yalding, suggesting they have moved away from the parish sometime after 1774.

15 May 1756 Mary HICKMOTT, dau Richard & Mary Maidstone igi Probably dau of Richard Hickmott and Mary Sweetman who were married at Boughton Monchelsea in 1755.

14 Aug 1757 John HICKMOTT of Brenchley /Mary WHITTLE otp Yalding reg (Wit: Nicholas Mol;e, William Humphrey). A John Hickmott, the son of John, was baptized at Brenchley in 1724. His mother was either Mary Sennock (married at Brenchley in 1703) or Judith Saxby (married at Brenchley in 1722). There is no record of Mary being born at Yalding (the LDS index of baptisms does show that a Mary Whittle, daughter of Robert, was baptized at East Malling in Kent in 1734). John and Mary’s known children: Thomas (1759, Brenchley), Judy (1764, Brenchley) and John (1766, Brenchley). The parish registers show that a John Hickmott was buried at Brenchley in 1765.

24 Dec 1758 Ann HICKMOTT, 74 Yalding reg We think this is Ann Relfe who was baptised at Marden in 1684 and married Stephen Hickmott there in 1706.

His last will and testament states that he was a yeoman farmer who held a number of parcels of land around Horsmonden. Possible children: William (1793, Maidstone) and Thomas (1796, Yalding). The 1841 census has a William Hickmot, aged 79, said to be independent and born in the county, living at Marden with a Mary Ladams aged 58 and also both independent and born in the county.

The 1841 census has a Walter (66 year-old nurseryman) and Mary (66) Hickmott living at Maidstone with their son William (23). We think that Mary died at Maidstone in 1844. The 1851 census has a Walter Hickmott, a 76 year- old former brewer and distiller born at Yalding, living at 4 College Almshouse in West Maidstone. The Catherine House records show that a Walter Hickmott died in the Maidstone RD in 1860. John died sometime between 1851 and 1871 (Ancestry’s National Probate Index shows that a James Hickmott, husband of Susanna, died at East Malling on 5 September 1863). By the latter date, Susanna, then aged 78, was an inmate at the Union House. She died in 1879, aged 86 years.

Mary Ann was born at Rotherfield in Sussex in around 1819 (the LDS index shows that an Anne Maynard, daughter of Edward and Mary Maynard was baptized at Rotherfield in 1819). The censuses indicate that the family lived at East Farleigh in 1851 (next door to Charles’ younger sister Eliza Spicer) and Yalding in 1861 (Charles’ mother, Mary Hickmott, aged 77 years and born at West Farleigh, was living with them at the time) and 1871 (the three year-old Charles Day was a visitor). Mary Ann died the following year, aged 53 years. The 1881 census shows the widower Charles living by himself in Yalding. We are not sure when and where Charles died. The censuses and local parish registers show that Charles and Mary Ann had at least six children: Mary (1837, East Farleigh), Matilda (1839, East Farleigh), Eliza (1841, East Farleigh), James (1843, West Farleigh), Charles (1846, West Farleigh), William (1847, West Farleigh), Ann (1848, West Farleigh), Louisa (1850, East Farleigh), George (1853, East Farleigh), William Page (1855, East Farleigh), Eliza Matilda (1857, Yalding) and Kate Maynard (1860, Yalding). Harriet was the daughter of Edward Jury a victualler. The wedding, held at All saints in Maidstone was witnessed by Samuel Wyand and James Ruck. We think that John was born at Maidstone in around 1815, son of Walter and Mary Hickmott nee Whyman who were married at Maidstone in 1798. The UK censuses show that Harriet was born at Maidstone in 1821 (the LDS index shows that a Harriet Jury, daughter of Edward and Elizabeth, was baptized at Maidstone on 22 December 1820). The censuses and parish registers show the couple had the following children at Maidstone: Harriet (1841), Edward (1843-9), Walter (1846), John Henry (1847), William (1850), Edward (1850), Robert (1852) and Charles (1856, Boxley).
