Chapter 4 the Right-Wing Media Enablers of Anti-Islam Propaganda
Chapter 4 The right-wing media enablers of anti-Islam propaganda Spreading anti-Muslim hate in America depends on a well-developed right-wing media echo chamber to amplify a few marginal voices. The think tank misinforma- tion experts and grassroots and religious-right organizations profiled in this report boast a symbiotic relationship with a loosely aligned, ideologically-akin group of right-wing blogs, magazines, radio stations, newspapers, and television news shows to spread their anti-Islam messages and myths. The media outlets, in turn, give members of this network the exposure needed to amplify their message, reach larger audiences, drive fundraising numbers, and grow their membership base. Some well-established conservative media outlets are a key part of this echo cham- ber, mixing coverage of alarmist threats posed by the mere existence of Muslims in America with other news stories. Chief among the media partners are the Fox News empire,1 the influential conservative magazine National Review and its website,2 a host of right-wing radio hosts, The Washington Times newspaper and website,3 and the Christian Broadcasting Network and website.4 They tout Frank Gaffney, David Yerushalmi, Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Steven Emerson, and others as experts, and invite supposedly moderate Muslim and Arabs to endorse bigoted views. In so doing, these media organizations amplify harm- ful, anti-Muslim views to wide audiences. (See box on page 86) In this chapter we profile some of the right-wing media enablers, beginning with the websites, then hate radio, then the television outlets. The websites A network of right-wing websites and blogs are frequently the primary movers of anti-Muslim messages and myths. -
Arabs and Muslims in the Media After 9/11: Representational Strategies for a “Postrace” Era
Arabs and Muslims in the Media after 9/11: Representational Strategies for a “Postrace” Era Evelyn Alsultany American Quarterly, Volume 65, Number 1, March 2013, pp. 161-169 (Article) Published by The Johns Hopkins University Press DOI: 10.1353/aq.2013.0008 For additional information about this article http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/aq/summary/v065/65.1.alsultany.html Access provided by University of Michigan @ Ann Arbor (21 Oct 2013 10:05 GMT) Arabs, Muslims, and “Post-race” Representations after 9/11 | 161 Arabs and Muslims in the Media after 9/11: Representational Strategies for a “Postrace” Era Evelyn Alsultany fter 9/11 a strange thing happened: there was an increase in sym- pathetic portrayals of Arabs and Muslims on US television. If a TV Adrama or Hollywood film represented an Arab or Muslim as a terror- ist, then the story line usually included a “positive” representation of an Arab or Muslim to offset the negative depiction. Dozens of TV dramas portrayed Arab and Muslim Americans as the unjust target of hate crimes or as patriotic US citizens. President George W. Bush was sure to distinguish between Arab and Muslim “friends” and “enemies,” stating “the enemy of America is not our many Muslim friends; it is not our many Arab friends. Our enemy is a radical network of terrorists, and every government that supports them.”1 News reporters interviewed Arab and Muslim Americans, seemingly eager to include their perspectives on the terrorist attacks, careful to point out their experiences with hate crimes. Yet at the same time that sympathetic portrayals of Arab and Muslim Americans proliferated on US commercial television in the weeks, months, and years after 9/11, hate crimes, workplace discrimination, bias incidents, and airline discrimination targeting Arab and Muslim Americans increased exponentially. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Advisory For more information or to schedule an interview, contact: David Reaboi, [email protected] or 202-719-2410 End the Shariah War On Women: Center for Security Policy Launches Campaign Washington, D.C., May 8, 2012 This Thursday, May 10th, at 10:00 a.m. in the Bloomberg Room of the National Press Club, the Center for Security Policy will launch a national public education campaign to ask America's leaders to end the real ‘war on women’ -- the Shariah War On Women. Shariah law oppresses women’s liberties and human rights, denying them their unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness: Life: Shariah destroys women's lives through honor killings, physical abuse, female genital mutilation, and rape. This occurs not only to Muslim women but also to Christian and secular women through acts of kidnapping, imprisonment and murder. Liberty: Shariah crushes women's liberty through censoring free speech, freedom of religion and freedom of association. Pursuit of Happiness: Shariah punishes women's pursuit of happiness by denying equal rights and freedom in marriage, divorce, child custody, education and employment A panel discussion, moderated by Center President Frank J. Gaffney, Jr. and featuring several prominent civil liberties and human rights activists, will launch the national campaign to end the Shariah War On Women. Panelists will include: Nonie Darwish: Ms. Darwish is an American human rights activist, writer, public speaker as well as founder and Director of Former Muslims United and founder of Arabs For Israel. Chapter 3 the Grassroots Organizations and the Religious Right
Chapter 3 The grassroots organizations and the religious right “Take your Sharia and go home, you terrorist lovers. Your hands are bloody! Your money is bloody! Get out! Terrorists! Terrorists! Terrorists!” These statements were shouted by protestors at Muslim American children walk- ing into a fundraiser event in Yorba Linda, California, in February of this year. The Muslim American families moved briskly into the building as some parents shielded their children from the men and women in the crowd, who were waving flags, carrying homemade signs, and barking obscenities. The taunts and howls of the mob were captured on video and later circulated online. The YouTube video left many observers around the country outraged at the visceral display of hatred toward a minority group.1 But it was just the latest in a string of events that have included vandalism at mosques, Koran burnings, and street protests against American Muslims. Our nation is witnessing a rising tide in anti-Muslim sentiments. A Washington Post -ABC News poll last September showed that nearly half of Americans (49 percent) hold an unfavorable view of Islam, which is a 10 percent increase from October 2002.2 Yet the Yorba Linda rally did not occur in a vacuum. Nor was it spontaneous. Some of the people involved are members of national organizations dedicated to targeting the Muslim American community. One of the largest such hate groups, ACT! for America, was involved in both the Yorba Linda incident and similar hate rallies in Tennessee, Florida, and other states, as this chapter of our report will demonstrate. -
Nonie Darwish
Nonie Darwish • Nonie Darwish, a writer and speaker, describes herself as “an American woman born Muslim in Egypt [who] warns the West of the dangers of Radical Islam and Sharia law.” • A convert to Christianity, Darwish is founder of Former Muslims United, a program of the American Freedom Defense Initiative, a group founded by Pamela Geller that the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) considers an anti-Muslim hate group. With Geller, she has put on programs, including an event called “Islamic Apartheid Week,” on some US college campuses. • Darwish is a Senior Fellow with the Frank Gaffney’s Center for Security Policy and has written for the David Horowitz’s Freedom Center’s Front Page Magazine. The SPLC considers both of these organizations anti-Muslim hate groups. • The Center for American Progress (CAP) identifies Darwish as an actor in the “Islamophobia network.” CAP considers Darwish one of numerous “validators,” a group of “individuals who claim inside knowledge about the realities of radical Islam,” not because of their expertise on Islam but because they are of Middle Eastern descent. • At a rally in 2011 organized by Geller’s Stop Islamization of America, Darwish said, “Islam is a poison to a society. It’s divisive. It’s hateful. Look what Islam is doing on our college campuses. It’s full of anti-Semitism... Islam should be feared, and should be fought, and should be conquered and defeated and annihilated!” • In a 2013 article for the Gatestone Institute, Darwish wrote that the “so-called ‘moderate’ Muslims have often been silent enablers and defenders” of “Muslim jihadists.” In that article, she also claimed that Muslims see Islam as “more than a religion – that it is, in fact, a state, legal system and a military institution.” The notion that Islam is a political ideology (and not a religion) is an idea commonly employed by anti-Muslim groups. -

DAVID YERUSHALMI 65 INTRODUCTION AND EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Based on the tracking of media coverage on American Muslims, anti-Muslim sentiment seems to be at an all-time high.1 The negative sentiment appears in many venues, from state legislatures debating anti-Sharia bills to opposition over construction of new Islamic centers. At the same time, media coverage has begun to focus on anti-Muslim activists in the United States and their corrosive effects on American pluralism.2 Within a national security and law enforcement context, there is no denying that extremists constituting the leadership of Al-Qaeda and its affiliates explicitly articulate their justifications for violence in “worldly” political terms – including the now-deceased Osama Bin Laden.3 They have also manipulated religious beliefs for their propaganda and terrorism recruitment purposes. -
