Anji had won all seven of their European games in Russia prior to Newcastle's visit. Previous meetings • Anji and Newcastle met for the first time in the first leg, the Magpies' first encounter with Russian opposition. • Anji met an English club for the first time in the shape of Liverpool FC in the group stage, each side recording a 1-0 home win. Match background • Newcastle have not conceded in three games since the turn of the year and are unbeaten in 12 home fixtures (W8 D4) since a 2-1 loss to RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2005 UEFA Intertoto Cup semi-finals. • Anji have not won in four away games (D2 L2) since beating AZ Alkmaar 5-0 in the UEFA Europa League play-offs. • This is the first time Anji have reached the last 16 of a European tournament; Newcastle are at this stage for the fifth time. They reached the quarter-finals in 1996/97, 2003/04 (when they went as far as the semi-finals) and 2004/05, missing out for the first time in 2006/07 after surrendering a 4-2 first-leg lead against AZ Alkmaar. • Anji and FC Viktoria Plzeň are the two longest surviving teams in the competition, having both entered in the second qualifying round. • Newcastle have made it to the round of 16 despite scoring just eight goals from matchday one onwards – the lowest tally of any of the group stage survivors to have made it this far. Team facts • Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper celebrates his 38th birthday on the day of the game; his midfield team-mate Yven Moyo turns 21 the morning after. • Samuel Eto'o is the only player to have featured in every minute of Anji's nine games since the start of the group stage – 810 minutes in total. • Eto'o featured in both matches as RCD Mallorca were beaten 7-1 on aggregate by Newcastle in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup fourth round. • Anji's Mbark Boussoufa and Newcastle's Cheick Tioté were team-mates at RSC Anderlecht in 2006/07. • Anji's Lassana Diarra (Chelsea FC 2005-07, Arsenal FC 2007-08, Portsmouth FC 2008-09) and Yuri Zhirkov (Chelsea 2009-11) have both played in England. • Newcastle defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa celebrates his 24th birthday on the day of the UEFA Europa League final – 15 May. • The round of 16 features teams from 11 UEFA member associations; eight nations have a single representative, with England and Russia both taking three teams through and Italy two. Russia enjoyed a perfect round of 32, with all three representatives - Anji, FC Zenit St Petersburg and FC Rubin Kazan – making progress. • Newcastle's Alan Pardew was the 2011/12 Premier League manager of the year, having been in charge of Reading FC, West Ham United FC, Charlton Athletic FC and Southampton FC prior to a move to Tyneside in 2010. A glazier and taxi driver while playing non-league football, the midfielder was in his mid-20s when he became a professional, playing for Crystal Palace FC and Charlton among others. • Anji coach Hiddink achieved little of note as a midfielder, but as a coach has racked up six league titles and five domestic cups with his various clubs. The Dutchman has also led the Netherlands, South Korea, Australia, Russia and Turkey at international level and won the 1987/88 European Champion Clubs' Cup with PSV Eindhoven. He took charge of Anji in February 2012. • During his brief spell in charge in 2009, Hiddink led Chelsea FC to a 2-0 Premier League win at Newcastle – the first game of Alan Shearer's brief spell as manager of his old side. Penalty shoot-outs • Newcastle's only previous penalty shoot-out in UEFA competition is: 3-4 v FK Partizan, 2003/04 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round Last updated 12/03/13 14:46:07CET 3 Match background Newcastle United FC - FC Anji Makhachkala Thursday 14 March 2013 - 21.05CET (20.05 local time) MATCH PRESS KIT St James' Park, Newcastle • Anji have never featured in a penalty shoot-out in UEFA competition. As a Geordie and a Newcastle United supporter, I always kept a keen interest on what was happening on Tyneside in the early stages of my career at Southampton and Blackburn. Although it was common for clubs to sign foreign players in the early 1990s, the market wasn’t saturated the way it is now, but it was certainly unusual for teams to invest in foreign goalkeepers. And Pavel’s arrival on Tyneside certainly caused a stir. He turned up on the club’s doorstep when it was struggling at the wrong end of the old Second Division. It must have been a baptism of fire for the young Czech goalkeeper. Not only did he have to adapt to a new style of football he had to settle in to a new town and culture.

  • Of Our Foundation
Finding more effective ways to detect and treat cancer OF OUR FOUNDATION Bob and I set up our Foundation 10 years ago because we’d been asked for help. We’d not been asked to set up a charity, just if we knew anyone who might like to donate some money to equip a new cancer drug trials centre. That request came from Professor Ruth Plummer, a woman I admire greatly. She was trying to raise £500,000 to fit out what eventually became the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre. They were moving the clinical trials team from its old site to a fantastic, purpose-built facility in the Northern Centre for Cancer Care in Newcastle. As Bob said at the time, they’re a first class team and should have a first class stadium. Alongside a marvellous team of caring professionals, Professor Plummer gives patients the opportunity to try new cancer drugs that might help extend their lives. And in undertaking the trials, these patients are helping build our knowledge about cancer treatment. They’re helping the people who will come after them who will also have to face this terrible disease. Well, Bob and I didn’t understand how Professor Plummer and her colleagues could raise this huge sum of money and keep doing such a demanding day job. That’s why we decided to launch our charity, Lady Elsie with Zara Stokoe, who has been fundraising in memory of her mum, Avril to raise the money for her. It was one of the proudest moments in my husband’s life when he was We don’t have professional fundraisers to organise events or able to hand over that first cheque for money we’d raised.

Now in Our Welcome, 31st Year! George Alexander Vol. 31 No. 5 August 2013 Louis BRITAIN’S new prince has been named George Alexan- der Louis. Speculation over what moniker Prince William and his wife, Kate, would pick for their first child ended just two days after the baby’s birth. Kensington Palace said the royals were “delighted to announce” their son’s name, adding that the Two-day-old baby and third-in-line to the throne will be known as “His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.” Noble names are steeped in history, which explains why thousands of bets rolled in to British bookmakers for the name George, the name of six previous British kings. The moniker evokes the steadfastness of the queen’s father, George VI, who rallied the nation during World War II. Meaning farmer or earth worker, George was the 12th most popular name for boys born in England and Wales in 2011. St George, a fourth-century Chris- tian martyr, is the patron saint of England.
