Gilboy University of Hull 201108684 Abstract (Thesis Summary) The objective of this thesis is to establish meme theory as an analytical paradigm within the fields of screen and fan studies. Meme theory is an emerging framework founded upon the broad concept of a “meme”, a unit of culture that, if successful, proliferates among a given group of people. Created as a cultural analogue to genetics, memetics has developed into a cultural theory and, as the concept of memes is increasingly applied to online behaviours and activities, its relevance to the area of media studies materialises. The landscapes of media production and spectatorship are in constant fluctuation in response to rapid technological progress. The internet provides global citizens with unprecedented access to media texts (and their producers), information, and other individuals and collectives who share similar knowledge and interests. The unprecedented speed with (and extent to) which information and media content spread among individuals and communities warrants the consideration of a modern analytical paradigm that can accommodate and keep up with developments. Meme theory fills this gap as it is compatible with existing frameworks and offers researchers a new perspective on the factors driving the popularity and spread (or lack of popular engagement with) a given media text and its audience. -

Introduction It is human to think in stereotypes. They help us comprehend an increasingly complex environment. Through the pre-construction of images of the “other” cognitive processes of perception can be reduced to an assortment of clichés. Ethnic minorities are particularly prone to being the subject of stereotyping. Specific ethnic markers such as the color of the skin, a foreign accent, or certain modes of clothing and behavior become projections for a pre-con- structed set of character. Indians and Indian Americans in the United States have often been subject to such stereotypes. Their skin color and distinct accent have set them apart from the American mainstream. Additionally, saris and bindi have been ethnic markers for Indian American women. Most of the stereotypes are centered on the alleged character of the ethnic minority and usually have a negative connotation, such as Indians being pas- sive and docile on the one hand and mean and deceitful on the other hand. Such preconceptions are often racist and offensive. However, the Indian American community1 has also been subject to positive stereotyping, being frequently referred to as a “model minority” that works hard and is econom- ically independent. _______________ 1 The application of the word community to describe NRI and PIO in the United States is highly problematic. The term assumes a sense of commonness and belonging among Indian Americans while totally ignoring internal differences. -

Television Out of Time: Watching Cult Shows On Download Will Brooker On 4 November, 2005, Keith, a fan of the TV show Lost, visited a gallery in Cleveland. He found a set of business cards lying innocently in small stacks, and picked one up to examine it. It looked like a lottery ticket, with a tropical resort vacation as the prize. Against a background of an Oceanic Airlines logo and a beach scene, the card read ‘Match your numbers at theislandiswaiting.com.’ and ‘The Island is waiting.’ He scratched the foil off with a fingertip and found a set of digits: 4. 8. 15. 16. 23. 42. He recognised the numbers. To him, they weren’t just numbers, but ‘The Numbers’, the recurring sequence from the first two seasons of Lost. He recognised the brand name, too. It was an Oceanic flight that crashed in the first episode, leaving the survivors stranded. Of course, he knew what the Island was. Keith went straight to his computer, scanned the cards and uploaded them to his favourite discussion board, sharing them with a community of fellow fans he’d never met. The next episode of Lost wasn’t scheduled to be broadcast for another six days, but for Keith and his online friends, the story and its fictional world could occupy their whole week, seeping into their everyday lives both on and off the computer. Following cult television is now a lifestyle experience. This chapter focuses on the practice of watching cult series as video files on a personal computer. It suggests key ways in which this experience differs from the conventional viewing of broadcast television at the time scheduled by the network, usually in a shared living area, on a television set some distance from the viewer. -

Muffuletto Abstract 42 American participants which included heterosexual Indian American men, Pakistani American men, and one biracial American man as well as heterosexual women and LGBTQI+ individuals who are romantically attracted to men, with the exception of one lesbian American woman, were interviewed in order to answer two major questions. Participants were asked how Indian American and Pakistani American men are portrayed in American television shows, films, news outlets, and politics. In order to answer that question, the participants were asked what Indian American and Pakistani American characters from television shows and films they remember from their childhood up until now. Then the participants were asked to discuss their in-depth perceptions of each character. Participants were also asked how Indian American and Pakistani American men are discussed in American politics and in news outlets. After answering those questions, participants were asked to reveal if these media portrayals have affected their general perceptions of Indian American and Pakistani American men in real-life. -
