Tolland Fire Department

TOLLAND FIRE DEPARTM ENT WANTS YOU! (NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY) Connecticut has more than 300 fire departments, staffed by over 26,000 firefighters & EMTs. Approximately 83% of those are volun- teers with professional level training. Volunteers are called upon 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to abandon the warmth and comfort

of their homes in the middle of the night, or during a holiday celebration. Without hesitation they leave the fun of family gatherings on

sunny summer afternoons, enter burning buildings, provide emergency medical assistance, rescue stranded hikers or struggling swimmers, extricate patients from automobiles, and more, because they find helping their neighbors extremely fulfilling.

The majority of fire departments throughout the state are experiencing a shortage of volunteers, and Tolland Fire is no exception. We

can use volunteers of all skill levels and abilities, people willing and able to respond to emergencies whenever called upon, as well as

support personnel such as fire police, auxiliary, and more! Here are just some of the things volunteers can do here in Tolland...

Firefighter - There are few things more exhilarating and satisfying than being a firefighter. Training and certification opportunities as- sociated with Tolland Fire Department will prepare you to engage in activities such as fire suppression, vehicle extrication, rescue, fire prevention & public education.

Emergency Medical Services - Did you know we are not just firefighters? Tolland Fire Department operates two ambulances staffed with EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians) and provides BLS (Basic Life Support) level care to our community. No experience? No problem! EMT training programs are held several times per year in which you can acquire EMT certification and start making a differ- ence.

Fire Police - Without our Fire Police Unit controlling the roadways, organizing vehicles and apparatus, and keeping emergency scenes protected, our fire and EMS personnel wouldn’t be able to operate as efficiently as we do. Training involves a federal Traffic Incident Management program and is an excellent way to contribute to the overall mission of our department.

Auxiliary - Our support services play a vital role in our ability to manage incidents of long duration and our ability to remain a tight-knit

family. The Auxiliary Unit is typically activated during particularly intense incidents in order to assist our responders in staying effective by providing appropriate refreshments and support. This Unit also plans and executes our social, community and fundraising events.

Special Members - Do you have a skill or talent that you think would be particularly valuable to the department, but not sure if you

want to commit to responding to emergency situations? Talk to us about opportunities to contribute as a special member.

Explorer Post 40 - TFD could not be prouder of our Explorers! Our program is for young men and women, aged 14-18, who have an interest in the fire service/EMS world. They train with us, have their own leadership structure, and can earn opportunities to ride along on calls. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) - Our CERT team operates similarly to the Auxiliary Unit, but in closer proximity to

our responders during large scale incidents. They can assist responders directly with scene tasks, as well as work in our Emergency Operations Center (EOC) when activated.

As you can see there are many opportunities in which you can volunteer. Both men and women over age 18 are welcome to apply; volunteers are wanted for each unit. Want to know more? Call the Training Center at 860-871-3677. You can also stop by the Training

Center at 191 Merrow Road, weekdays, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., or on Monday nights after 7:00 p.m., when he hold our

weekly training sessions. Don't forget to follow us on Facebook (@tollandfire), Twitter (@TollandAlert), and Instagram (@TollandAlert).

WILDLIFE REMINDERS FROM TOLLAND ANIMAL CONTROL Every year at this time our department begins to receive an increase in calls regarding concerns of wildlife. Please don’t be alarmed! It is not uncommon to see a glimpse of a beautiful fox, coyote, bobcat, fisher cat, or even a black bear or two crossing through your property especially during the early morning or dusk hours.

For instance fox enjoy laying out basking in the warmth of the sun or hunting for mice in your stone walls. Lying in the sun helps them dry out their wet coat from the spring rains and helps heel their skin of ailments. Unless the animal is aggressive, collapsing, walking in circles/dizzy, or appears lethargic/sick, there is no need to notify our department. Just enjoy watching the animal from a distance while in its natural habitat.

To deter these animals from being on your property, please be sure to keep all garbage in closed containers, don’t put food out in compost piles, put away bird feeders, do not leave pet food outdoors, and do not leave small animals outside unattended. You may hang wind chimes in areas which frequent these animals or bang metal objects from a distance, to frighten them away.

If a resident witnesses any wild animal which is sick or acting aggressively towards either a human or a companion animal, or if a person or animal makes physical contact with a wild animal, please contact Tolland Animal Control at 860-871-3676.

For more information on wildlife facts, please visit the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (D.E.E.P.) website at: http://www.ct.gov/deep/ Click on ‘Natural Resources’ and then ‘Wildlife’.

Now that warmer weather is finally here, many of you may be

thinking of installing a swimming pool. A building permit is re- quired for all in-ground pools and any above-ground pools that are more than 24 inches deep. Building codes have changed a bit and we are here to offer guidance for a code-compliant instal- lation. Items commonly missed by installers are proper bonding of the water and perimeter area; not having a floating pool alarm; not having a proper fence or gate and running the pump off of an

extension cord instead of permanent wiring.

Another thing that we see many people doing is running a window air conditioner off an undersized extension cord. A proper air conditioner cord is usually of 14 gauge wire, has a three-prong plug and is no longer than six feet long. A utility-grade cord may not only damage the air conditioner, but will likely begin to melt and may cause a fire well before the circuit breaker trips. Do

yourself a favor and visit a knowledgeable, well-stocked hardware store for assistance in selecting a proper cord.

The Building Official, James Paquin is typically available in the office to answer questions from 8:00-10:00 AM and Noon-2:00 PM, plus 6:00-7:30 PM on Thursdays.
