DID YOU KNOW…?

…that the number of WA state square dance clubs posting events on WheresTheDance.com (“WTD”) is growing? Yes, it’s true…and it’s about time! 24 square and round dance clubs and associations (roughly 25% of the total in our state) have posted one or more events on the site through the end of 2021 for a grand total of 247 dances, workshops, or classes posted as of August 10th.

Blue Mountain Council – Prairie Shufflers Central Area Council – Gateswingers Central Puget Sound Council – Jet Steppers, Pi-R Squares Mount Baker Council – Dudes & Dolls (Lynwood) North Central Council – 4 x 8’s Peninsula Council – Dudes & Dolls (Bremerton), Gig Harbor Twirlers, Round Squares, Square Steppers, Sweetheart Rounds Rainier Council – Bonney Lads ‘N’ Lassies, Roamin’ Tacomans, Spinners, Swingnuts Sou’ Wester Council – Flutterwheels, Round-A-Bouts Spokane Council – Diamond Squares, Star Shooters, Wild Rose Ramblers Unaffiliated with a particular council – Circle 8 Ranch, Hard-N-Easy, Maple Valley Plus

Congratulations to the “authorized WTD editors” who have seen fit to finally make posting their calendar events on WTD a priority. Everyone will benefit from your efforts once the remaining clubs follow suit---the clubs themselves and, most especially, the dancers in our state! Is your club or council included in the list? Have you tried using WheresTheDance.com to search for dance event postings for your area or elsewhere across the state? [It’s so easy, you can even use your smart phone to do it.] If you answered “no” to either question, stay tuned. I plan to give you ample reason(s) to convert “no” to “yes” in upcoming “Did You Know….?” articles.

5 | FOOTNOTES www.squaredance-wa.org SEPTEMBER 2021 6 | FOOTNOTES www.squaredance-wa.org SEPTEMBER 2021 50th ANNIVERSARY OF CALLINGCALLING.

HARLES J. TOMLINSON…whether you call him Charles, Uncle Chuck, Chuckie, Sparky, CJ or CTom, he is still a Rainier Council caller of great renown. Over the course of his 80 years he has lived and called all over the world. He started the square dancing at the age of 15 in Kingston, Idaho. He joined the Navy and became a ship’s signal man. He danced whenever he could fi nd a dance. Early 1970 found him dancing in Syracuse New York. A group of “friends” talked him into doing an Amateur Night. Th e rest is history. Th e group sent him to caller’s school in Troy New Hampshire where upon graduating he joined CallerLab.

Now that he could call, what was he to do? His “Friends” wanted a club. First came the Barge Th ru’s (in honor of the Erie Canal). But the Teens wanted their own club so then came the Smileys. Did I mention he was also a clogger? Well you guessed it, the Penguins were born. Round dancers wanted a part of the ac- tion, too…so the Ribit Rounds were born (with the teens being Little Riblets). All of these families danced, camped, socialized, and yes, worked together. Th ere was dancing every night of the week!

A friend arranged for Tom to call overseas involving a trip to Switzerland. Once there several additional cities were added to Tom’s itinerary. Th en, back home he came. He was calling so much that his “regular job” kept getting in the way. So Tom became a full-time caller, all up and down the east coast, plus Europe. Being a family man, however, he found himself growing increasingly tired of not having his family close-by, so he eventually “retired” from full-time calling and returned to New York to be a “family man” again.

In 1985 Tom relocated to the West Coast as a civilian working for Uncle Sam at Fort Lewis. He found a house in Steilacoom, and it wasn’t long before he was actively engaged in square dancing again. He’s called for the Phil’s & Phillies in Poulsbo, clubs in Olympia, the T-Squares, the Evergreen Rounds, the Swingin’ Squares in Sumner. Tom learned American Sign Language in the mid-90’s, becoming a licensed interpreter/ translator/educator for the school district. For over 15 years Tom has volunteered his time to teach kids with special needs how to square dance. Tom has also played an active role in helping coach teen square dancers for the PNTSDF competitions.

Now (and for the past 25+ years) Tom is the Caller & Cuer for the Roamin’ Tacomans. Tom has been an integral part of square dancing in Rainier Council and the WA State Federation of Square and Round Dancing for decades, having held too many positions to list here! He is deserving of the attention and admiration of square dancers statewide and beyond. Please help us congratulate Tom, Charles, Uncle Chuckie, Sparkie, CJ or whatever you know him as for sharing his many talents for the last 50 years.

7 | FOOTNOTES www.squaredance-wa.org SEPTEMBER 2021 8 | FOOTNOTES www.squaredance-wa.org SEPTEMBER 2021 9 | FOOTNOTES www.squaredance-wa.org SEPTEMBER 2021 he couple that we have chosen is well-deserving of this recognition. Th ey are square and round dancers Twho, in their words, “love it all”. Th ey consider square dancers “family” and many are among their closest friends. Married in 1984, they began square dance lessons in 1985 where their passion for our activity took hold. Th ey have been non-stop workers since then, involved in Club, Council, State and National positions.

Th ey’ve held numerous Treasury, Finance & Audit positions at all levels, including the 2007 State Festival and the 2012 National Convention. Also, they’ve been club President, Caravan Chairman, Council Delegate, Council and State Historian, etc. Most impressive is the fact that they are long-term in many of these positions - 13 years holding the State Treasurer offi ce, Council Treasurer for 25 years beginning in ‘94, Council Footnotes Reporter since 2008, and more! Th ey do a fantastic job as their club newsletter editor, a position they’ve held since 2007. It is a wonder they have had time to enjoy the dancing! For 9 years they were members of the exhi- bition team “Dream Weavers” who widely promoted the joy of square dancing through public performances. Th ey’ve been to 34 Washington State Festivals, 7 US Nationals and 2 Canadian Nationals.

Past awards include their Council’s Jack Willison award in 2004, and the State Federation’s President Award in 2017.

Everyone loves their company and their infectious smiles & enthusiasm. Th ey have 4 children, 6 grandchil- dren and 3 great grandchildren! She’s been one of my COVID penpals; we’ve kept in touch and her positive up- beat personality shines through even in her emails! I don’t think they’ve ever had a bad day; if so, I can imagine that they just grin and keep going!

Th is couple has a magical connection with the number 19 - their fi rst date, engagement, & wedding all occurred on the 19th of various months, their birthdays are 19 weeks apart to the day, even their house number digits add up to 19! ...there are other fun 19 facts, too, ask ‘em!

Well, this is June 19th, and it is their day to receive the Washington State Federation MacGregor Award. From Central Puget Sound Council & the Wagon Wheel Squares, TOM & DONNA ROHDE.

Report from the Festival Chairpersons

ONS OF FUN WA STATE ROUND and TSQUARE DANCE FESTIVAL was a huge suc- cess. Did we make money? NO. Did we get support from the State or MBC? Not Much. But, many thanks to the ones that did: the Mahans, the Roh des, the Ottosons and Doug Keyes. A few more showed up for Saturday. Again thanks for your support.

Everyone had a great time. We had many compli- ments, and lots of thanks for having the Festival. It was great having the Awards at dinner time instead of Saturday morning. Th e Hotel was super: they were very short staff ed, and yet did a great job. If you were not there you missed a great one. We still have shirts left . So if you feel so inclined we are selling them for $5.00 each, so please buy one even if they do not fi t. It can be a souvenir of the 1st time in a hotel for the WA State Square and Round Dance Festival. Tom and Judy Corning Chairpersons

VANSVILLE — Th e 71st National Square Dance Convention® will keep dancers busy in- Edoors, but if you need some fresh air for a few hours, these attractions within the city can help.

Angel Mounds State Historic Site is one of the best-preserved Native American sites in the United States. Wander through trails and marvel at the ingenuity of these indigenous people that lived 700 to 1,000 years ago. See tools and methods they used and learn about their culture.

Bosse Field is where the movie “League of Th eir Own,” starring Tom Hanks, Madonna, Gina Davis, and Rosie O’Donnell, among other stars, was fi lmed. It’s also the third-oldest baseball fi eld in the U.S., only in and in are older. Mesker Park Zoo and Botanical Garden is a great way to spend an aft ernoon. Home to more than 700 animals, there’s plenty to see among its 45 acres. Walk through its Amazonia exhibit, which mimics the South American Rainforest.

If you’re looking for more nature, try Wesselman Woods, a National Natural Landmark and State Nature Preserve just a 7-minute drive from the convention center. It has more than 190-acres of virgin bottomland hardwood forest and is the largest old-growth urban forest in the nation.

Speaking of relaxing walks, the riverfront plaza is a great place to walk and enjoy scenic views of the Ohio River. Take in the Four Freedoms Monument as you watch the sun rise or set.
