THE BENEDICTINE FOUNDATIONS IN XISHAN AND CHENGDU, 1929-1952 Fr. Luke Dysinger, OSB Mission and Monasticism, Studia Anselmiana 158, Analecta Monastica 13, (Sant’ Anselmo, Rome; EOS Verlag, Germany, 2013), pp. 185-195. The story of the Benedictines of Szechwan Province during the first half of the Twentieth Century can be divided into three epochs or phases encompassing two geographic locations. The three phases correspond to the first three superiors of the monastery, each of whom possessed a unique vision of how Benedictine monasticism could best serve the needs of the Catholic Church in China. The two geographic locations are: Xishan, near Shunqing, where the community was first established in 1929; and Chengdu, the capital of Szechwan Province where in 1942 the monks were compelled by the vicissitudes World War II to seek refuge 1: CONTEMPLATIVE ASPIRATIONS 1927-1933: Xihan, Prior Jehan Joliet In 1926 Dom Jehan Joliet, a monk of the Abbey of Solesmes, and Dom Pie de Cocqueau of the Abbey of St. André (now know as SintAndries, Zevenkerken), departed the port of Marseilles for Beijing. They were to establish a new monastic foundation that would be a canonical dependency of St. André.1 The Benedictine Abbey of St. André had been designated at its inception as a “Monastery for the Missions”. Since 1898 the community had been committed to monastic missionary work in Brazil by its founder, Abbot Gerard Van Caloen; and in 1910 his successor, Theodore Neve, pledged the community to work in Africa by accepting the Apostolic Prefecture of Katanga in the Congo. Record Group I.06.01 John Joseph Williams Papers, 1852-1907 Introduction & Index Archives, Archdiocese of Boston Introduction Biographical Sketch Scope and Content Content List (A-Z) Subject Index Introduction The John Joseph Williams papers held by the Archives of the Archdiocese of Boston span the years 1852-1907. The collection consists of original letters and documents from the year that Williams was assigned to what was to become St. Joseph’s parish in the West End of Boston until his death 55 years later. The papers number approximately 815 items and are contained in 282 folders arranged alphabetically by correspondent in five manuscript boxes. It is probable that the Williams papers were first put into some kind of order in the Archives in the 1930s when Fathers Robert h. Lord, John E. Sexton, and Edward T. Harrington were researching and writing their History of the Archdiocese of Boston, 1604-1943. At this time the original manuscripts held by the Archdiocese were placed individually in folders and arranged chronologically in file cabinets. One cabinet contained original material and another held typescripts, photostats, and other copies of documents held by other Archives that were gathered as part of the research effort. The outside of each folder noted the author and the recipient of the letter. In addition, several letters were sound in another section of the Archives. It is apparent that these letters were placed in the Archives after Lord, Sexton, and Harrington had completed their initial arrangement of manuscripts relating to the history of the Archdiocese of Boston. In preparing this collection of the original Williams material, a calendar was produced. -

INDICATORS TO THE HOLY SEE FOR THE CHOICE OF NEW BISHOPS FOR VACANT SEES (1867-1877) One of the most difficult conflicts to resolve in relationships between the Holy See and the new Kingdom of Italy was that of the dozens of Episcopal sees left vacant for political reasons. Both parties were aware of the seriousness of the situation, but attempts to exit from the situation were shipwrecked by the persistent serious friction brought about by proclaiming a Kingdom which comprised territories taken from the Papal States (1861). Only in 1865-1867 did a process of détente coming into place, where, having overcome mutual resistance, the Holy See succeeded in appointing many bishops with the agreement of authorities of the Kingdom. Don Bosco, involved in these complex diplomatic negotiations as unofficial representative of the Holy See in order to make contacts, lobby, refer people, seek mediation, had done his part, especially for the dozens of vacant Episcopal sees in Piedmont19. In 1865 he intervened to set up what would be called the Vegezzi mission which ended without result; in 1866-1867 he was contacted by mediator Tonello at the invitation of the President of the Council, Ricasoli and during these contacts he proposed candidates acceptable to both parties. In the years that followed he continued to communicate with the Cardinal Secretary of State telling him that the people and civil authorities were happy with the appointments, and to express his own views, hopes and concerns regarding some of them, suggesting candidates for appointment which he knew of, and who stood out for piety, doctrine, prudence and being in tune with the Holy See. -

A Courageous Story
A courageous story There is an early, defining moment in Joyce Duriga’s biography of Father Augustus Tolton. Father Tolton was the first native-born American of African descent ordained for the Catholic Church in America. He was born a slave to a Catholic family in pre-Civil War Missouri. Duriga, former associate editor of Our Sunday Visitor, explains in the preface that his very name — Augustus Tolton — is a bit of a mystery. In his baptismal record in 1854, the local church identified him only as “a slave child.” By his confirmation, he was known as “August,” but there’s little explanation where it came from. As to the last name, Duriga explains that slaves had no such names. The last name “Tolton” also appeared first in his confirmation record but, as Duriga writes, “no documentation exists as to where that last name originated.” No first name. No last name. This was the world of Father Augustus Tolton, who could possibly become the next canonized American-born male saint. He would join the company of Father Solanus Casey, a Capuchin priest who counseled and ministered to thousands up to his death in 1957; Father Stanley Rother, a martyred Oklahoma priest shot in the head in 1981 while serving the poor in Guatemala; and De La Salle Christian Brother James Miller, who was also shot to death in Guatemala in 1982, and was recently recognized a martyr by Pope Francis. The experience of black America in the second half of the 19th century is the ever-present backdrop to this marvelous book. -

Military troops had to regroup to the communist zone in the North or the noncommunist zone in the South. Civilians could also join the zone of their choice for 300 days. As a result, more than 800,000 civilians left the North to move to the noncommunist zone (Figure 3.1). Many Western newspapers published the story of Vietnamese escaping communism. The French Catholic journalMissi sent its editor in chief to cover the story. Father Naïdenoff gave a vivid depiction of their ordeal. A photograph showed a man lying on the deck of a boat, with one hand on his forehead and the other one holding a crucifix to his chest (ECPAD 1955a). The accompanying caption read: “A poignant vision of faith. In the deepest sleep, they hold a crucifix which serves as an identity card in their exodus to freedom” (Naïdenoff 1955a). -
