Lake Rotoiti Ratepayers & Residents Association Ohau Channel paving its way info Lake Rotoiti Kia Ora Greetings from the Lake Another year is rapidly drawing to a close as we continue to keep our eyes and ears keenly tuned to the events and occurrences of the District and particularly those which concern Lake Rotoiti. Some issues, such as the On-Site Effluent Treatment Regional Plan, have been on the boil whilst a host of others remain on the simmer awaiting positive direction or otherwise. Your committee has again devoted considerable time and effort in attempting to ensure that our ratepayer dollars are fairly and equitably distributed, and that any outcome in terms of regulation changes, funding proposals, or other decisions are appropriate and acceptable, firstly for those upon whom they impact directly, and secondly for the District as a whole. We believe, and sincerely hope, that our interest and intervention has helped to realise or at least enhance the expectations of our communities. The Association is once again grateful for the solid backing received from its more than 400 subscribers who provide the strength and support behind the many submissions and requests which are made on behalf of Rotoiti stakehol ders . Sedimentation and Drainage History, Tarawera River System Operations Publication 2004/03 Environment Bay of Plenty iii Executive Summary Haroharo caldera has been formed by the coalescence of multiple collapse structures over the last 350 kyr, the latest major collapse accompanying voluminous rhyolite pyroclastic eruptions at ~50 ka. The caldera has formed a sink for precipitation on surrounding catchments, with overflow via the Tarawera River through the Whakatane graben to the sea at ~30 km to NE. Lakes have probably always occupied at least part of the caldera floor, but the early lacustrine history is largely obscured by younger eruptives. Since 26 ka, the Haroharo, Okareka, Rotoma and Tarawera volcanic complexes have grown within the caldera during eleven eruption episodes, confining ten lakes on the caldera margins. Growth of the volcanic complexes has greatly altered drainage paths and ponding areas within and marginal to the caldera, so that the present ~700 km2 caldera catchment area is about half the ~1400 km2 area that drained into the caldera between 26 ka and 9.5 ka. -

DECEMBER 1997 Kia Ora Greetings from the Lake With the end of another year fast approaching, it is time to provide an update on activities and occurences since our June Newsletter. As Local Government bodies continue to take on greater responsibilities the result is closer consultation with communities and individuals. This reflects a growing awareness of how co-ordinated efforts can develop and expand initiatives. Our pro-active participation in this arena, whilst creating extra workloads, means that we remain to the forefront in our aim to represent the interests and aspirations of all who live within the Lake Rotoiti catchment along with those who visit the area for recreation and pleasure. There is a growing need to ensure that an ecological balance is maintained in the face of ever increasing pressures on the lakes and their environs. It is essential that community organisations such as ourselves continue to seek appropriate decisions and solutions in meeting the demands of progress whilst promoting fundamental improvements to our own quality of life. Again, we extend thanks to our sponsors and advertisers along with the many of you who subscribed to the Association. Your ongoing support will enhance our ability to pursue the many issues of importance which affect our localities. MAI Review, 2007, 3, Doctoral Conference Abstracts Māori spaces in foreign places: The case of Hinemihi o te āo tawhito Keri Wikitera Tuhourangi/Ngāti Wahiao Auckland University of Technology Auckland, New Zealand [email protected] This study is in the preliminary stages of a PhD candidature. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate Māori economic development opportunities in tourism. Many of which are intrinsically linked to cultural identity (Te Awekotuku, 1981; Ryan, 2002). This study aims to demonstrate that Māori notions of cultural identity are not confined to connections to geographical place alone. Cultural identity are socially created spaces dependent on relationships of people to each other and to iconic cultural references existent in both physical and metaphysical representation. The study will examine the history of Hinemihi, a whare tipuna that was situated at Te Wairoa, Tarawera until the eruption of 1886. She was built in response to the burgeoning tourism trade and she is now situated at Clandon Park, London. Clandon Park is a quintessential English estate, now also a tourist destination. Embedded in her history are significant periods of change for Māori. The study will investigate her relationships with Tuhourangi and Ngāti Hinemihi in her early years through to her relationship with Ngāti Ranana now. Also how she has linked people through whakapapa and now contemporary notions of identity. This report is in accordance with Clause 5.1 and 5.2 of Deed of Funding with the Crown, for the Programme. In this report, progress made on individual interventions is reported against the Annual Work Programme commitments. The overarching goal of the Deed of Funding Agreement is to meet community aspirations for water quality in the four Deed Funded lakes: Rotoiti, Rotorua, Ōkāreka and Rotoehu. Each of these lakes has a target water quality set by the community in the Bay of Plenty Regional Water and Land Plan. This target water quality is set by Trophic Level Index (TLI) and this report provides an update on the status of water quality across the Rotorua Te Arawa Lakes, against the targets set for all lakes, Deed and non-Deed funded. -

A THESIS PRESENTED IN FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN EDUCATION AT MASSEY UNIVERSITY, PALMERSTON NORTH, NEW ZEALAND. JAMES PHILIP HECTOR GRAHAM 2009 i ABSTRACT The thesis examines the contribution of Te Aute College to Māori advancement by exploring the whakapapa of Te Aute College and the brand that has developed out of the school’s whakapapa from its beginnings in 1854 prior to major European settlement in the Hawkes Bay through to the 21st century. In doing so, the notion of whakapapa is used to reveal the layers of tradition, history, connections, narratives, achievements and setbacks that have enabled the realisation of Māori potential and the ability of Te Aute College to sustain a contribution to the advancement of Māori. This thesis contends that the contribution of Te Aute College to Māori advancement stems from its whakapapa and its brand that is unequivocally Te Aute in focus and character. An Indigenous Māori research paradigm, a whakapapa research methodology, provides the context for researching Te Aute College, the basis of this thesis. The thesis also explores whakapapa as a tool that can be used as a legitimate research framework when engaging in Māori research. -

Lake Rotoehu Action Plan ISSN 1175 9372 (Print) ISSN 1179 9471 (Online) Environmental Publication 2007/19 November 2007 (As amended April 2011) Lake Rotoehu Action Plan Hearing Panel Decisions 7 November 2007 Environmental Publication 2007/19 Lake Rotoehu Action Plan Environment Bay of Plenty, Rotorua District Council, Te Arawa Lakes Trust i Foreword We are pleased to release the Lake Rotoehu Action Plan, which aims to significantly improve the water quality of Lake Rotoehu through lake restoration actions over the next ten years. Lake Rotoehu is a relatively quiet lake valued for trout fishing, kayaking and some waterskiing. However since 1993 it has suffered major cyanobacterial blooms, and more recently the spread of hornwort beds through much of the shallow areas. Te Arawa value the Te Arawa Lakes and the Lakes' resources as taonga and continue to maintain their spiritual, traditional, cultural and historical relationships with their ancestral lakes. The Action Plan outlines some key actions to improve lake water quality, such as: Land use and land management changes on pastoral land to meet a nutrient loss reduction target. Implementation of Environmental Programmes to protect waterways. Hornwort biomass harvesting. Wetland construction. Rotorua District Council, Environment Bay of Plenty and Te Arawa Lakes Trust look forward to working with the Lake Rotoehu community and landowners on these actions. If these actions are achieved, there is a good chance that Lake Rotoehu could be pulled back from its eutrophic state to become a mesotrophic lake again. A key indicator that this has happened will be a decline in the extent of cyanobacterial blooms that infest the lake during the summer months. -
