Where Store 701 and Sam’s Club 4728 (almost 200 miles apart) Why One night, while filling in at the Tire and Lube Express (TLE) service counter, Brandon experienced a rare occurrence: He was stumped while solving a problem with a customer’s transaction. “I didn’t even think twice before calling up Rob for help,” Brandon says. “He is the guy everyone turns to. He has such a positive attitude and truly lives out the company’s pillars of respect for the individual, striving for excellence, serving the customer, and acting with integrity every day.” Rob, who as a team leader in the TLE has extensive knowledge of that department, walked Brandon through the steps to process the transaction, which resulted in a happy customer. “We’re all part of a team with the same goal: helping each other succeed to serve the customer as best as we can,” Rob says.

FROM THE EDITORS Faster and Better NASCAR season’s starting, so we’ve made speed a main theme of this issue. After all, working with a sense of urgency is as important at Walmart as it is for a NASCAR crew—we don’t win if our customers can’t get in and out of stores quickly. However, exceptional service means more than speed. What does it mean to you and your team? Tell us at [email protected]. —THE EDITORS

For the Health of It I recently won the ZP Challenge in my store, and I really enjoyed being interviewed and photographed for your December issue. We hold monthly ZP meetings and often use your health content and recipe remakes in our discussions about easy ways to improve our well-being. We even made a magazine rack to organize our issues. Keep up the useful health and food content! —Carol Newborn, reclamation associate, Store 3205, Lithia Springs, Ga.

Did you ever envision yourself being where you are today, a NASCAR Hall of Famer known as “The King”? Zenaida Bell, department manager, jewelry, Store 944, Crestview, Fla.

It was just timing. We probably did the best in our era because we really concentrated on it, worked hard, and prepared. I didn’t do anything by myself. It took the entire group of us at that time. We all focused on nothing but racing, preparing for the next race. You put it all together, and it worked for us. We never thought about it; it was just what we did for a living.

What is your most memorable victory? Ron Carlino, cashier, Store 3103, Goddard, Kan. Probably winning my last one, the 200th. It came down to the last green lap, racing with Cale and winning by feet. That, and having the president [former President Ronald Reagan] at the track, made for a really special moment.

How does a driver go about getting good sponsorship for his or her team? Valerie Dixon, reclamation associate, Store 5470, Huntingdon, Pa. We always find out what we can do for them. I always say that we don’t have sponsors, but partners. We try to figure out how we can promote their business and make it grow. Read Valerie’s story, ”Walmart’s Fastest Family?” on Page 51.

TV Tech That Matters Today’s TVs outclass even the top high-definition flat-screen models from a few years ago. The latest screens feature more pixels, richer colors and depth, and a contrast-boosting curve. Here’s what that means for viewers.

Curved Screens, Clearer Scenes Experts say that one of the top advantages of a curved screen is reduced glare. Ambient light reflected by a TV screen can spoil image contrast. Current curved TV screens can reduce that reflected light by about 2-to-1. Why It Matters: By effectively doubling a TV’s contrast in real-world viewing conditions, curved displays improve every scene. On-screen shadows look deeper, and colors appear richer and more accurate.

More Pixels, More Detail Pixels are the tiny dots of color that make up a digital image; images look more detailed as you fit more dots into a given space. Ultra high- definition (UHD), or 4K, TVs pack in four times the pixels of full HD (1080p) TVs. Why It Matters: Experts say UHD is poised to replace 1080p HD as TV’s gold standard. Although UHD/4K content is currently limited, the TVs can upconvert a full HD signal for a better experience.

Deeper Blacks, Greater Realism Some HDTVs struggle to display detail in darker scenes, which is caused in part by backlighting that might leak through. New technologies, like local dimming, minimize this effect. Why It Matters: Greater contrast and deeper blacks give images more depth, so what you see on screen is even more realistic.

“The big takeaway from Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2015 is more curved televisions. Curved TVs give customers the movie theater experience in their homes.” —Lora Yadon, buyer, TV/home theater, Home Office, Bentonville, Ark.

Wins for Unique Business Walmart’s Supplier Diversity team provides often-overlooked and underestimated suppliers great opportunities.

Walmart’s customers come from all walks of life, so it’s important that the suppliers who offer goods and services to customers reflect that. Enter the Walmart Supplier Diversity team, based at the Home Office in Bentonville, Ark. The team sources businesses owned by minorities, women, veterans, people with disabilities, and other diverse groups. Walmart’s goal is to provide these diverse suppliers the opportunity to be on equal footing so they can work and grow with Walmart, says Michael Byron, senior director, Supplier Diversity. Currently, Walmart works with more than 3,000 diverse suppliers, and the company spent $10.3 billion in 2013 to develop those partnerships. The seven-member team finds many suppliers by working with outside organizations. Internally, the team works with merchandising and professional services to develop spending goals for a supplier’s product category or service. “Our team has years of experience in sourcing, merchandising, operations, contract negotiating, and advocating and Members of the Walmart Supplier Diversity team, from left: developing diverse supplier relationships Jonathan Nimrod, director; Sudha Bala, project manager; that will help us deliver quality products Rola Meunxayakham, senior manager; Salah Khalaf, senior and services to meet customers’ needs, manager, Supplier Diversity, Sam’s Club; Alma Lopez, director; and Michael Byron, senior director drive down our business costs, and strengthen sales and profits,” Michael says.

Twelve seconds or less. When NASCAR’s 67th season kicks off this month at Daytona International Speedway, pit crews that take longer than 12 seconds per pit stop to change four tires and refuel will delay their drivers and jeopardize their chances of winning. We believe Walmart associates face similar challenges every day. Between keeping the back room organized, making sure the sales floor is properly stocked during peak hours, and providing exceptional service to customers, some of whom may be unhappy, a Walmart workday can be just as intense as one at the track. In his book, Made in America, Sam Walton said, “You can learn from everybody.” So we were curious. What would members of a NASCAR pit crew say is key to thriving when the pressure’s on—whether at work or at home? We asked the crew chief and six- member 2014 crew for NASCAR’s No. 43 driver . Their answers are so universal, they just might help you make 2015 your best year yet.

Lesson 5 Roll with the changes. “I was on the No. 9 car all season (in 2014); then I got thrown in on the No. 43 for the Chase races,” explains Kevin Wing, jackman. “Those guys didn’t have to accept me, but they did.” Off the track: Peter R. Garber, author of More Turbulent Change, shares advice on facing change. “Bad-mouthing the new change is not productive,” he says. “You will be judged on how you helped make a change be successful. That’s the side of change that you want to be on.” Lesson 6 Mind the details. Practice in the week leading up to the race is all about the fine details, explains Kyle Power, rear tire changer. And they don’t take anything lightly. “You can’t assume that someone else is going to cover for you,” Kyle says. Off the track: Whether you’re stocking shelves at work or balancing your checkbook at home, avoid multitasking because important details can slip, lowering productivity and actually slowing you down, according to research from Stanford University.

Lesson 7 Adopt common goals. Walmart’s Fastest Family? Speed is a weekly sensation for Valerie Dixon, reclamation associate at Store 5470 in Huntingdon, Pa., and her family. Valerie has raised her family on racing. The Dixons have been regulars at dirt tracks near their central Pennsylvania home since 1986 (her husband; oldest son, George Jr.; and grandson are all racers or former racers). With three generations into racing, the Dixons have learned a thing or two about life by spending time at the track.

“ ‘The family that races together, stays together.’ My son George said that, and it’s one of our biggest life lessons. We all work together toward a common goal, which is like what we do at Walmart. It ties us together as a family.”

0215_Speed Feature_SM3.indd 51 1/7/15 1:03 PM “I have a catchphrase that’s good for triathlons and for a lot of things in life. ‘It’s not how fast you go; it’s how slow you don’t go.’ Because you can work feverishly for a short amount of time and screw up because you went too fast. But if you go too slow, then you don’t get anything accomplished.”

Walmart’s Iron Man One of the world’s endurance-sports icons also is a member of the Walmart family. Gordon Haller, a programmer analyst in the Information Systems Division, won Walmart’s Iron Man the first IRONMAN World Championship 37 years ago, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Today, the first “Iron Man”—who is based at the David Glass Technology Center in Bentonville, Ark.—continues to compete in these epic events, which include a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride, and a 26.2-mile run. Gordon, now 64, still knows speed. He trains for shorter-distance triathlon events and one or two IRONMAN events each year, in his age group. 52 The Associate’s Guide to Living Better

0215_Speed Feature_SM3.indd 52 1/7/15 1:03 PM Lesson 9 Avoid overthinking things. “Usually the first reaction is the right reaction when you’re dealing with speed and quickness. You can adapt it to everyday life or athletics. You want to react to the situation.” Champion of Checkout Kamoe Mehrtens, a cashier at Store 3478 in Honolulu, Hawaii, has been recognized as having an impressive number of scans per hour according to research from the Walmart Home Office in Bentonville, Ark. Instead of scanning and bagging items one at a time, Kamoe quickly empties shopping containers, positions items on the belt so that UPC codes face the scanner, and then zips through a customer’s purchases. The process accelerates both checkout and bagging. “When you scan eggs, a hammer could come up next,” he says. “You can’t really bag those together, so you’ve got to stop scanning and separate the eggs from the hammer. Scanning the way I do, you can separate things much easier.”

When I started working at Walmart, I was also helping my mother with my three younger siblings. My father had passed away a few years earlier, and I wanted to do everything I could to help. I’d heard great things about the company—and now I’ve been at this same store for 40 years! When Mr. Sam was alive, he made his associates feel good about themselves whenever he came to visit. I love that. I’m retiring in June but will always treasure the memories and friendships made here.

EMMANUEL MOLINA ASSISTANT MANAGER STORE 2494 | OCEANSIDE, CALIF. Showing Our Pride Emmanuel Molina, assistant manager at Store 2494 in Oceanside, Calif., has been one of the thousands of spectators at the San Diego Pride Parade for years. The parade, a hallmark of the city, strives to foster respect for the LGBT community. Knowing Walmart’s commitment to diversity, Emmanuel approached the management at his store to ask if Walmart would help cover the $1,500 cost to enter a group in the July 2014 parade. Emmanuel was soon connected to Philip Serghini, director of Public Affairs and Government Relations, who helped orchestrate the funding. Walmart went above and beyond the initial request and gave $10,000 to be an official sponsor of the event. Emmanuel and Scott Dieschbourg, then overnight assistant manager at Store 2253 in El Cajon, Calif. (now an assistant manager over groceries at Sam’s Club 6235 in San Diego), brought together a group of roughly 60 associates for the parade, all wearing shirts with the logo from the Associate Resource Group PRIDE (Promoting Respect, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equality). “Backing this event shows that Walmart supports its associates for who they are,” Emmanuel says. “I’m proud of who I am, and I’m proud of who I work for.”

The Walmart Spark The Walmart Spark represents the spark of inspiration that moved Sam Walton to open the very first Walmart in 1962. It’s that same inspiration our associates feel when they save people money so they can live better. It’s also the same spark our customers feel when they leave our stores having saved so much.

In the 1950s, with a growing number of Ben Franklin stores to visit, Sam decided the fastest way to do it was to take to the sky. He paid $1,850 for his first plane, a two-seater Ercoupe 415-C, and flew himself around Arkansas and surrounding states. The Walmart Museum sells a model of the plane, and the original, shown here, is housed at the Arkansas Air and Military Museum in Fayetteville, Ark.

TODD LIBBRA | MARKET MANAGER, MARKET 55 | GARLAND, TEXAS

SAM WALTON TAUGHT ME: Relationship building is fundamental in business and in life.

WHEN I MET HIM: I was a young store manager in Bloomington, Ill., when I got a call to pick up Mr. Sam from the airport in 30 minutes. I was nervous, of course, but he asked about the store, the community, and, most importantly, my family. After touring the store, he asked me to take him to Target. I didn’t have a good relationship with the manager there. We were always having price wars. Mr. Sam was impressed by this Target and congratulated the manager. Afterward, Mr. Sam and I talked about my poor relationship with him. He told me that while I needed to win on price, I also needed to put my ego aside and build a relationship with my competitor. He said it would help me grow as a retailer and as a person.

PUTTING IT TO USE: If the founder and CEO of Walmart could be friendly with a competitor, shake his hand, and tell him he was doing a good job, then I certainly could do the same. We were never buddies, but we developed a professional relationship and learned from each other.
