WITCHCRAFI/b OSA NOVA BABY-- Elvis Presley (RCA) This m i l more than likely carry through as a best seller -until the first of next year. Both sides are potent...but the oldie, is the stronger of the two. I ’M NOT A FOOL ANYMORE - T K Hulin (Smash) Listen to it again...and you may still not believe it, but this record has been #1 in five large markets, in the last three months., it would do the same for you, if you play it. GOTTA TRAVEL ON - Timi Yuro (Liberty) She has the ability to sell R & B...and the re quests are beginning to pile up at the stations that got it early. This side, all the way to the top twenty. Powerful lyric. HE UNDERSTANDS ME - Teresa Brewer (Philips) #9 at WJHO, Opelika, . Could break through much bigger in the South with more play. Has the potential. 31 FLAVORS - Shirelles (Scepter) Dick Starr-WFUN, Miami agrees....this is the side. You’ll have to forget their two past semi-failures....judge this on its own merits. On that basis, it’s the closest to their old ’garbage’ sound in quite a spell. YOU LOST THE SWEETEST BOY - Mary Wells (Motown) Jumps into the WKLO, Louisville chart at #35» A top request for Hot Scott-WGIV, Charlotte. Not a smash by a long shot, but with very little acknowledgment, it is far* from being a bomb. YOU’RE GOOD FOR ME - Solomon Burke (Atlantic) Strong stuff! He doesn’t get too much pop play at first, but once the R & B stations get it moving, it’ll be one Of the final quarter’s largest hits. MARSHMALLOW - Johnny Cymbal (Kapp) Jack Gale-WKKO, Cape Canaveral, I believe, is his manager and picks the flip. If this one is going to make it, I feel it’ll have to be this side, which as a new item represents better programming. FUNNY FACE - Linda Brannon (Epic) Top five seller at Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral... and a big item in Atlanta. It requires a good three weeks play to break, so don’t start with it unless you want to go all the way...it won’t do it with token spins. MARIA ELENA - Los Indios (RCA) A top request in Houston. I t ’s been around for many weeks. This is the first positive action on it in the South. It does grow on you. WONDERFUL LOVE - Mel Carter (Derby) A top request at WAKE, Atlanta after only a week’s play. Has a sound that could be very big in the South. Good beat. WONDERFUL SUMMER - Robin Ward (Dot) It would appear that A1 Smith-WKIX, Raleigh has found another giant. He was the first to blast the current Angels hit. A winner with the teen set. KIDNAPPER - Jewell and the Rubies (ABC) #2 at WDXY, Sumter, S. C. Play it, and it’ll do , the same for you. Getting larger each week. WE BELONG TOGETHER - Jimmy Velvet (ABC) Available at last. A lucky few played this a couple of months ago and made it a top request item in the South...if it’s not too late, it could be a solid item. YESTERDAY AND YOU - (Liberty) Tries hard to sound like the recent Wayne Newton hit. His performance is shallow, but the arrangement may pull it through. PUSH A LITTLE HARDER - Avons (Groove) Frank Clarke-WMAK, Nashville, is doing a great job of breaking some good items in his area. H e ’s responsible for the and T K Hulin hits...and this is #2 on his request list. A FINE FINE BOY - Darlene Love (Philles) This should be the best seller of her three records to date. The requests really out-distanced the sales on her first two. TWO SIDES - (Argo) If you passed it up, then turn around and get on it now. R & B play has made it big already. I ADORE HIM - Angels (Smash) If they were not coming off of a hit, then this would more than likely never even get half the attention it will receive in the next ten days. Repetition will aid an otherwise weak item. NINETY NINE MILES AN HOUR - Hank Snow (RCA) This will be his biggest pop seller to date. Wait if you so choose, but remember, I told you so. LET US MAKE OUR OWN MISTAKES - Bryan Hyland (ABC) He just missed, or almost made it big last time. Scattered request reports so far, nothing big yet. THE MATADOR - Johnny Cash (Columbia) 23 weeks ago we tipped you on "Ring of Fire." Dick Starr-WFUN, Miami makes this his pick. A wise selection for you too. Listeners will like...early sales will be big, mainly juke boxes. - k - October 7, 1963 Number Twenty Four ALBUM PROGRAMMING MAKE THE WORLD GO AWAY - Timi Yuro (Liberty) This gal has ’soul.’ A good part of the public is still not aware of her vocal talent. Play this album and plug her, she’s certain to be up on top in the years to come, and she should stay there for a long long time. Marty Paich gives her a superb backing on "A Legend In My Time." "I Walk The Line" and "Leavin’ On Your Mind" are both grade A. Her latest single is from this set, and it’s bound to be a winner, wherever it's programmed. SINATRA’S SINATRA - (Reprise) The up-tempo numbers and "All The Way" sound exceptional, the second time around. H e ’s improved his "I've Got You Under My Skin," but his ’damn well’ may prevent your airing of the best cut in the album, then again, it may not. This album is very compatable with a modern music or top forty format. "Witchcraft" and "How Little We Know" are also very good. SURFER GIRL - Beach Boys (Capitol) Already a smash seller. New single, "In My Room" is taken from this one. "Our Car Club" is great for the car conscious. All cuts are very strong. This group has taken on a very professional sound, since the label purchase'd their first single, a little over a year ago. RECIFE FOR SOUL - Ray Charles (ABC) Still the 'boss' album of the year. Any of the Marty Paich numbers could be a good . follow-up to his current best seller, and almost any cut is good programming, especially "That Lucky Old Sun" and "Over The Rainbow." WONDERLAND OF GOLDEN HITS - Andre Kostelanetz (Columbia) Great arrangements of some recent best sellers. This is the kind of stuff that gets rating points when the kids are in school, or during an all night show...don’t over do it, but a dash here and there wisely programmed, will be well worth the effort. Take your pick, a dozen smart items in all. WHEN A BOY FALLS IN LOVE - Mel Carter (Derby) Hard to tell what it is that makes this • a great album, the artist or the band. His tender reading of "Twelfth of Never" is tops. "Hold Me'1 is a great rhythm number. Even Ed Townsend would dig this "For Your Lcrve." So will your listeners, if you can get a copy of this album. SEPTEMBER SONG - Jimmy Durmte (WB) All style.' And don't laugh...the single is doing very well, and the album even better. The good music stations had really put this one over, in addition to the few pop operations that had the nerve to go on it. "Young At Heart" and "I Believe" compare with the title song in performance. This may be corn to you, but as corny as Frank Fontaine may be, his two albums are big sales items, and big with the good music stations. This is similiar, and for change of pace is strongly recommended.
