Chapter I L I L I L History of Kirloskar Brothers Ltd. ^ ------------------------ -------------- - _ ■ . CHAPTER III H I S T O R Y O F KIRLOSKAR BROTHERS LIMITED - - - - - - - - - - - - - (1) Although this chapter primarily refers to the history of Kirloskar Brothers Limited, it also makes some passing references to the development of the House of Kirloskars. (2) It is very difficult to separate the history of Kirloskar Brothers from the biography of Laxmanrao and Shantanurao, Their leadership has helped the advancement of Kirloskar Brothers Limited. Therefore, this chapter deals with major events in the life of Laxmanrao and Shantanurao. (3) The personal observations and conclusions of the researcher are also stated whenever found necessary. (4) Alongwith the need for the establishment of Kirloskar Brothers Limited, the researcher has also stressed the philosophy with which the Kirloskar Brothers Limited has been working since its inception. 3.1 THE BEGINNING OF KIRLOSKAR BROTHERS In the year 1888, Laxmanrao Kashinath Kirloskar started a shop in (16) partnership with his elder brother Ramuanna Kashlnath Klrloskar for selling imported bicycles on commission. The establishment of this shop was the beginning of the History of Klrloskar Brothers. Both, Laxmanrao and Ramuanna, were working as school teachers: at the same time they ran the bicycle shop. Their salaries as school teachers were too inadequate to meet the financial needs of their joint family. Therefore, they started the bicycle shop which brought in an additional income. Thus, the name of Klrloskar Brothers was first made popular as the bicycle merchants. 3.2 CONTEMPORARY BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT In order to understand some outstanding features of Kirloskar Brothers, it is worthwhile to study the social, political and economic conditions of those times that served as a background for the establishment of PQrloskar Brothers Limited.

  • India's Missed Opportunity: Bajirao and Chhatrapati
India's Missed Opportunity: Bajirao and Chhatrapati By Gautam Pingle, Published: 25th December 2015 06:00 AM http://www.newindianexpress.com/columns/Indias-Missed-Opportunity-Bajirao-and- Chhatrapati/2015/12/25/article3194499.ece The film Bajirao Mastani has brought attention to a critical phase in Indian history. The record — not so much the film script — is relatively clear and raises important issues that determined the course of governance in India in the 18th century and beyond. First, the scene. The Mughal Empire has been tottering since Shah Jahan’s time, for it had no vision for the country and people and was bankrupt. Shah Jahan and his son Aurangzeb complained they were not able to collect even one-tenth of the agricultural taxes they levied (50 per cent of the crop) on the population. As a result, they were unable to pay their officials. This meant that the Mughal elite had to be endlessly turned over as one set of officials and generals were given the jagirs-in-lieu-of-salaries of their predecessors (whose wealth was seized by the Emperor). The elite became carnivorous, rapacious and rebellious accelerating the dissolution of the state. Yet, the Mughal Empire had enough strength and need to indulge in a land grab and loot policy. Second, the Deccan Sultanates were enormously rich because they had a tolerable taxation system which encouraged local agriculture and commerce. The Sultans ruled a Hindu population through a combined Hindu rural and urban elite and a Muslim armed force. This had established a general ‘peace’ between the Muslim rulers and the Hindu population.

  • 'Colourism': an Analysis of Humour and Body Politicsin Kerala's Visual Culture

Contemporary Malayalam cinema however, is praised for its‘new generation cinema’ wave, which ha sapparently shed both its fetish over rustic settings, anti-political undertones and patriarchal violence, to embrace an urban, post-political life of the supposed ‘new generation’ Malayalees. Such cinemas however, continue remain within the monochrome panorama of the old generation which refused to acknowledge the social other and continued to position the dark-skinned, short statured, plump bodies as a site of violence and humour where the physical body plays a part in the politics of subaltern subjugation. The indirect implication of course being that such bodies are not suited for a civil society, who remain incongruent with the realities of the modern spaces by either being violent and antagonistic or comic and out of place. The paper aims to broadly define and delineate the practices of casteism and visual untouchability being practiced in Malayalam visual media.
