October and November 2012

“HISTORY UNDER OUR FEET” With & District Metal Detectorists “Centurion Mestrius” aka David Marsden, Tuesday 30th October 2012 Winteringham Village Hall, at 10.30amPrice: £ 8.00 This is a special and unique day designed to appeal to all ages (6 – 90) and planned for the half term holidays. The Scunthorpe and District Metal Detectorists will start the day with a field walk (weather permitting) by kind permission of Ian Dowson allowing us to feel the excitement of a possible find! If wet a table with their past finds will be on show with their equipment for you to browse and ask questions etc and available to look through during the lunch break. After the break for lunch at 2pm we will receive a visit from “Centurion Mestrius” in his full regalia. Mestrius is a centurion of the 14th legion and will talk of his life and experiences in the Imperial Roman Army. Winteringham is reputed to be the site of a Roman encamp- ment so he could have been based here during his army service! So why not come along and hopefully feel the “buzz” of excitement of discovery. Centurion Mestrius at North Kelsey W.I. last Please note Family and friends most welcome September. Refreshments, soup, sausage rolls and cakes will be available at reasonable prices. (Please indicate on form if required). Alternatively visitors are able to bring their own picnics. Then why not join us at WI House on Tuesday 6th November 2012 at 10:30am for the Reading Group meeting which lasts between an hour and an hour and a half. The group started in 2007 with about 15 members. At present we don't meet in January, July or August and in December we usually have a Christmas lunch. The last book we read, "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" by Paul Torday, proved a popular choice with all members who thoroughly enjoying the author's wit & humour. The October book, to be discussed, is "The Secret River" by Kate Gren- ville. It is an informal meeting, chatting about the latest book read over a cup of coffee, and you can either just listen or join in with your "two penneth" as they say. At present we are a very small group, so why not take the plunge and join us, you will be made extremely welcome. For further information and details of the chosen book for November, contact WI House or Marjorie Grisdale (01652 653930 ).

Gliding at Trent Valley Gliding Club—Kirton Lindsey Air Field. Trent Valley Gliding Club very bravely invited members of the Humberside Federation of WI’s to fly with them. Having never been known to resist a challenge, four members took up the gauntlet. Michelle O’Brien, Sue Hawney, Lesley Jacklin and Sue Bolton all took to the air for a short flight and all had the chance to pilot the glider. The aim of the exercise is to interest more ladies in the sport. The feeling of being up in the clouds was wonderful, it was so quiet and the views were spectacular. The Federation has done some gliding before and we hope to start again soon. Life is too short to pass up the opportunities that come your way. Members are invited to join the Trent Valley Gliding Club at the Kirton Lindsey Air Field. They will fly with an experi- enced pilot in one of the club’s gliders, this is not a chance to be missed, A full safety briefing is given. The air field is on the B1398 out of Kirton Lindsey towards Lincoln. Drive about half a mile then turn left by the wind sock into the club site. The cost of the session is £27 and this also covers insurance, should you want a second flight it will cost a further £10. When booking please state which session you wish to book. 10 members per session. You need to take refreshments and packed lunch if required. Any queries, contact Lesley Jacklin, Tel 01472 502833, email [email protected] Saturday, 20th October 2012 10.00 am session 1—1.00 pm session 2 Price: £27.00

A huge welcome to our newest W.I.,Waltham who meet at All Saints Church Hall on the second Mon- day of each month. They currently have 19 mem- bers, but at their last meeting they had 89 in attend- ance! Well done Waltham! I am sure that every- one will wish them well in their new venture!

She has specially written and is to perform for us "85 years of Fashion" Some of us are coming dressed in clothing from those 85 years (mini skirts!) so if you would like to join in with that, the more the merrier! Limited numbers of tickets available (price £8) contact Valerie Lancaster 01724 733212 email [email protected] to book your place at this very special evening." KIRTON-IN-LINDSEY CELEBRATES ITS 75th BIRTHDAY The weather during the weekend of 8th and 9th September was gloriously warm and sunny and the perfect accompani- ment for the Exhibition staged by Kirton-in-Lindsey W.I. to mark their 75th Anniversary. It was housed in St Andrew’s Church, in the town, and was put together under the inspired guidance of Carol Hird. The many visitors who came to view it were treated to a feast of exhibits, which included items from the archive such as pho- tographs, past programmes, lists of members and the books produced on the occasions of oth- er anniversaries, containing a pastiche of life during that year and guaranteed to stimulate memories. WI memorabilia added to the sense of history, but the present was not excluded. Items crafted by members were also on display, and WI commercial products were offered for sale. Flowers arranged by members decorated the church where, on Sunday afternoon, a Service of Thanksgiving was conducted by Anne Wild, herself a member of the Institute. It was followed by tea for approximately 40 people and the focus was celebratory cake, cut by the longest serving members. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and the occasion was deemed as a great success.

Chairman’s Blog. As you can see we have a new style HFWI Newsletter from our new editor Sue Bolton from WI. All new things need time to bed in but I hope you will enjoy reading it. The Board as ever is working hard to give you a varied programme of events. The Choir Concert at Limber by the Humberston Singers and the Weelsby WI Speaking Group is something we thought may be popular particularly as the Federation is trying to set up its own choir. The Christmas Fair at Kirton Lindsey in November is a new venture for the Federation we hope to attract both traders and WI’s to sell their wares. Public Affairs are holding a Soup Day at the House in Brigg on Thurs- day 25th October and of course we have our usual Mince Pie Day at Brigg on Thursday November the 29th. We look forward to seeing you all at these events. Carole Robinson I am sure you will all be sorry to learn that our Federation Secretary, Carole, who has endeared her- self to many members, is leaving us. She has been with us for nearly two years and she tells me she has thoroughly enjoyed our company and the WI. We will be sad to lose her but I know you will all wish her well. New Federation Secretary. We have a new secretary, Gill Chambers who starts as Carole finishes. Please make yourselves known to her, she will have many names to learn plus finding out about the ways of the WI. Federation Choir The initial meeting of our choir took place on September 6th at Brigg. We don’t have a conductor or accompanist but have located a keyboard, we can borrow and we have 16 members full of enthusiasm. We did sing and sounded really good. I know there are other members out there who are interested so contact WI House and they will pass your details on to me. If you know of anyone who can play or conduct us, please let us know at WI House. WI membership is not necessary and they can be male or female. Lesley Jacklin.

I had a super evening at the “Thankyou” supper at Great Limber. It was nice to put faces to names and meet new people and share ideas. The food was delicious—a big thank you to all the board members for all their hard work. Unfortunately the internet wasn’t behaving and I had so much to show you in my presentation. I am also hoping to put on some training on basic computer skills and an introduction to the internet. So watch this space!! Sue Bolton.

Denman News. Well Ladies it seems a long time now since fifty of us went on our Denman Taster Visit and from your feedback it was both successful and enjoyable. Members from twelve WI's went including Gwen Farrow from Thorton Curtis who was our first Federation Chairman from 1977 - 1980, she joined the WI in 1948 and completed her VCO training at Denman in the 1950's, not I might add in an en suite bedroom but a freezing multi bedded wooden dormitory. Another lady with us was Mary Harvey from Broughton WI, she joined a WI just down the road from Denman College in 1961. Gwen is 91 and did drawing and music courses and Mary is 92 and attended music and container gardening. Age is no barrier at Denman, there is something for everyone. If you haven't been before why not come and enjoy the splendid hospitality that our wonderful College has to offer by join- ing us on a FULL FEDERATION VISIT 10TH - 12TH JULY 2013 details enclosed with more to follow in November.
