For Ronald McDonald House Charities of & Southwest Washington, 2016 was a year of astonishing growth. We saw and felt it all around, as we inspired more donors and more volunteers to help us house families with seriously ill children for more night stays — all supported by more programs than ever before. We also experienced unprecedented growth in demand: With 20,740 requests for our services in 2016, we heard the call for continued growth and expansion in order to support the children and families we serve.

We grew in other ways, too. In the fall, we welcomed the Central Oregon community into our fold, when we merged with the Central Oregon chapter of Ronald McDonald House Charities and assumed operations of its beautiful, lodge-style Bend Ronald McDonald House. In broadening our reach, we can now accommodate 56 families a night at three wonderful Ronald McDonald Houses in two cities, extending our unique brand of compassionate hospitality across Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Also in 2016, we celebrated the construction groundbreaking of OHSU’s Gary & Christine Rood Family Pavilion in Portland which, when it opens in 2019, will house a new, state- of-the-art, 38-room Ronald McDonald House. And in Springfield, OR, we finalized our partnership with PeaceHealth Sacred Heart at RiverBend to begin designing a Ronald McDonald House program for the proposed new Heartfelt House, also opening in 2019.

Our support for seriously ill children and their families can be proven by numbers: Across our three Houses, 1,825 families stayed for a total of 17,917 nights; we enjoyed support from Keeping Families Close 1,506 volunteers and served 451 meals to families. The number of individuals and groups who supported our efforts increased by nearly 50 percent. We added more staff, new programs, and new events, including our first-ever Stronger Together 5K Walk in Eugene, OUR MESSAGE Salem, and Vancouver. All this growth and expansion has a singular purpose: to keep families close to their hospitalized children by providing a "home away from home" when they need it most. It’s why we are here, and we’re thrilled to be able to do it more often, more effectively, and in more places than ever before.

Thanks for all you do to help us fulfill this mission.

With gratitude,

Cindy Luckman Jessica Jarratt Miller Chair, Board of Trustees Chief Executive Officer

FOR A CRITICALLY ill or injured child, nothing is more frightening than being in the hospital without one or both parents close at hand. Yet sometimes families must travel far from home, often for weeks or months, for children to receive necessary treatment. That’s where a Ronald McDonald House comes in. Each House provides a “home away from home” for families with seriously ill chil- dren — a place where they can stay close to their child without having to worry about where they’ll sleep for the night or where they’ll get their next meal.

Each of our Houses is unique in setting and story and, in 2016, we added another: In October, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon & Southwest Washington merged with Ronald McDonald Charities of Central Oregon, allowing us to strengthen our statewide network and bring our support to Bend’s six-room, twenty-year-old Ronald McDonald House, unifying our programs that support seriously ill children and their families.
