Potential of Five Non-Spore-Forming Bacteria, Originated from The
Ertürk and Yaman Egyptian Journal of Biological Pest Control (2019) 29:59 Egyptian Journal of https://doi.org/10.1186/s41938-019-0160-6 Biological Pest Control RESEARCH Open Access Potential of five non-spore-forming bacteria, originated from the European cockchafer, Melolontha melolontha (Linnaeus, 1758) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), on three economic insect pests Ömer Ertürk1* and Mustafa Yaman2 Abstract Five non-spore-forming bacteria were isolated from the European cockchafer, Melolontha melolontha (Linnaeus, 1758) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). Their potential was tested against the three economic insect pests, the great spruce bark beetle, Dendroctonus micans Kugelann (Coleoptera: Curculionidae); the pine processionary, Thaumetopoea pityocampa (Lepidoptera: Thaumetopoeidae); and the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (Linn.) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae), to find an effective biological control agent. All isolated bacteria were cultured and identified using VITEK bacterial identification systems and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. ThebacteriawereidentifiedasEnterobacter cloacae complex (isolate 1M), Serratia marcescens (isolate 3M), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (isolate 4M), Kocuria kristinae (isolate 5M), and Serratia liquefaciens (isolate 8M). Laboratory experiments, carried out to evaluate the virulence of these isolates, showed that all isolated bacteria had a pathogenic effect on the tested pests. E. cloacae had 35, 56.7, and 84%; S. marcescens 50, 60.9, and 47.8%; P. aeruginosa 55, 69.6, and 48%; K. kristinae 40, 43.5, and 16%; and S. liquefaciens 45, 65.2, and 36% mortality rates on the larvae of D. micans, T. pityocampa,andL. dispar, respectively. The isolated bacteria can be considered in integrated pest control programs. Received 4 February, 2020; Accepted 7 April, 2020 The main purpose of this study is to explore the perception of Bishoftu town residents about the impacts of urban tourism. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were employed to achieve the objective of this study. Random sampling procedure was used for selection of respondents from the residents. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze data. The result of factor analysis showed that three factors named economic, socio-cultural and environmental impacts explained 53.24% of variation in the perceptions of residents. However, most of the local residents and stakeholders were unaware of negative impact of urban tourism. MANOVA analysis indicated that, there was no significant difference between the mean of underlying dimensions of the perceived urban tourism impacts, and socio-demographic characteristics. The concerned bodies and officials should take the issues into account while planning and devising various measures. Key words: Urban tourism, residents‟ perception, tourism impacts, Bishoftutown. Oromia is the largest National Regional State of Ethiopia. Here we present the first comprehensive checklist of its birds. A total of 804 bird species has been recorded, 601 of them confirmed (443) or assumed (158) to be breeding birds. At least 561 are all-year residents (and 31 more potentially so), at least 73 are Afrotropical migrants and visitors (and 44 more potentially so), and 184 are Palaearctic migrants and visitors (and eight more potentially so). Three species are endemic to Oromia, 18 to Ethiopia and 43 to the Horn of Africa. 170 Oromia bird species are biome restricted: 57 to the Afrotropical Highlands biome, 95 to the Somali-Masai biome, and 18 to the Sudan-Guinea Savanna biome. -

Tourism © Ethiopian www.ethiopia.travel Text: Philip Briggs; Photography: David Kirkland, Aziz Ahmed, Ludwig Siege, Antonio Fiorente Antonio Kirkland, David Siege, Briggs; Photography: Philip Aziz Ludwig Ahmed, Text: The East - Danakil, Harar and Bale Mountains • The scorching Danakil, where salt-bearing camel caravans traipse mirage-like across blinding-white salt-flats, swept by a gale known as the Gara, or Fire Wind. • Volatile Erta Ale, its volcanic caldera cradling a bubbling cauldron of molten black lava and eruptive glowing fountains of red-hot magma. • The labyrinthine alleys of Harar Jugol, an ancient walled citadel with a wealth of Islamic mosques and shrines, bustling markets overhung with aromatic spices and cafes brewing freshly-roasted coffee plucked from the surrounding hills. • The Afro-Alpine moorland of the Sanetti Plateau in Bale Mountains, where handsome red Ethiopian wolves - the world’s most endangered canids - trot jauntily through the pastel-shaded heather. • The cool damp Harenna Forest in Bale Mountains, a vast tract of gnarled tree heathers, towering bamboo clumps and a canopy of evergreen foliage. • A rapier-horned oryx antelope cantering across wide open plains of Awash National Park, a group of colourfully dressed sellers in Dire Dawa open-air market, the immense limestone caverns of Sof Omar. This is Eastern Ethiopia. A land of astonishing geographic extremes, where the austere lavascapes and salt-flats of the northern Rift Valley, which plunges to 116m below sea level in the Danakil, contrast with the misty peaks of the Bale Mountains, which rise over 4,300m a short distance further south. -

Our flight in from the UK was delayed so no time for any real birding on this first day of our “Chilled Birding Tour”. Our local guide Tijan and our ground crew met us at the airport. We piled into Tijan’s well used minibus as Little Swifts and Yellow-billed Kites flew above us. A short drive took us to our lovely small boutique hotel complete with pool and lovely private gardens, we were going to enjoy staying here. Having settled in we all met up for a pre-dinner drink in the warmth of an African evening. The food was delicious, and we chatted excitedly about the birds that lay ahead on this nine- day trip to The Gambia, the first time in West Africa for all our guests. At first light we were exploring the gardens of the hotel and enjoying the warmth after leaving the chilly UK behind. Both Red-eyed and Laughing Doves were easy to see and a flash of colour announced the arrival of our first Beautiful Sunbird, this tiny gem certainly lived up to its name! A bird flew in landing in a fig tree and again our jaws dropped, a Yellow-crowned Gonolek what a beauty! Shocking red below, black above with a daffodil yellow crown, we were loving Gambian birds already. -

Bird Conservation International (1993) 3:13-19 Preliminary survey of the avifauna of Mt Tchabal Mbabo, west-central Cameroon THOMAS BATES SMITH and DUNCAN McNIVEN Summary The montane forests of western Cameroon are well known for their endemic birds. The most northerly such forests probably occur on Mt Tchabal Mbabo, where a preliminary survey of the avifauna in 1990 found 12 montane species, of which six represented significant range extensions, among them the threatened Ploceus bannermani. Given the increasing human pressures on other montane forests in Cameroon, Mt Tchabal Mbabo may be attractive for future conservation because of its comparative lack of human dis- turbance. Densities of indigenous people are low and there is a lack of significant hunting and firewood-gathering, the precipitous nature of the northern slope makes human intrusions difficult, and the lack of human disturbance may mean that local animal populations are stable. Les forets d'altitude de l'ouest du Cameroun sont bien connues pour leurs populations endemiques d'oiseaux. Les forets les plus au nord sont celles du Mont Tchabal Mbabo, ou un recensement preliminaire de la faune aviaire en 1990 a revele 12 especes, dont six avaient une aire de repartition relativement grande, y compris l'espece menacee Ploceus bannermani. Etant donne l'accroissement des pressions humaines sur les autres forets d'altitude au Cameroun, le Mont Tchabal Mbabo pourrait se reveler interessant pour des programmes de conservation futurs, compte tenu d'une perturbation humaine relat- ivement inexistante. Les densites de population indigene y sont faibles, et la chasse ainsi que le ramassage du bois pour les besoins domestiques ne sont pas significatifs. -
Namibia & the Okavango
Pel’s Fishing Owl - a pair was found on a wooded island south of Shakawe (Jan-Ake Alvarsson) NAMIBIA & THE OKAVANGO 21 SEPTEMBER – 8 OCTOBER 2017 LEADER: STEVE BRAINE For most of the country the previous three years drought had been broken and although too early for the mi- grants we did however do very well with birding generally. We searched and found all the near endemics as well as the endemic Dune Lark. Besides these we also had a new write-in for the trip! In the floodplains after observing a wonderful Pel’s Fishing Owl we travelled down a side channel of the Okavango River to look for Pygmy Geese, we were lucky and came across several pairs before reaching a dried-out floodplain. Four birds flew out of the reedbeds and looked rather different to the normal weavers of which there were many, a closer look at the two remaining birds revealed a beautiful pair of Cuckoo Finches. These we all enjoyed for a brief period before they followed the other birds which had now disappeared into the reedbeds. Very strong winds on three of the birding days made birding a huge challenge to say the least after not finding the rare and difficult Herero Chat we had to make alternate arrangements at another locality later in the trip. The entire tour from the Hosea Kutako International Airport outside the capital Windhoek and returning there nineteen days later delivered 375 species. Out of these, four birds were seen only by the leader, a further three species were heard but not seen. -

Biodiversity Observations http://bo.adu.org.za An electronic journal published by the Animal Demography Unit at the University of Cape Town The scope of Biodiversity Observations consists of papers describing observations about biodiversity in general, including animals, plants, algae and fungi. This includes observations of behaviour, breeding and flowering patterns, distributions and range extensions, foraging, food, movement, measurements, habitat and colouration/plumage variations. Biotic interactions such as pollination, fruit dispersal, herbivory and predation fall within the scope, as well as the use of indigenous and exotic species by humans. Observations of naturalised plants and animals will also be considered. Biodiversity Observations will also publish a variety of other interesting or relevant biodiversity material: reports of projects and conferences, annotated checklists for a site or region, specialist bibliographies, book reviews and any other appropriate material. Due to its distant localization from the continent and its variety of landscapes, this group of islands serves as objects of interest for studies in the sphere of evolutionary biology. From the beginning of the age of naturalistic explorations in the middle of 19th century, only few detailed ornithological expeditions were conducted until recently. In this connection, nowadays we have at our disposal only superficial information concerning the disposition of population structure and interspecific interactions within bird species, particularly sparrows. Technical progress and development of technologies in the field of molecular biology giving us an opportunity to investigate these processes more closely. This study clarifies phylogenetic relationships between 3 Passer species: 2 invasive (P. domesticus and P. hispaniolensis) and 1 endemic (P. Iagoensis). I also revealed a pronounced presence of P. hispaniolensis ancestry in P. domesticus genome that indicates existence of recent hybridization in the range of their contact, and supporting the notion that these species are prone to interspecific breeding elsewhere. I also found that P. Iagoensis has relatively high genome divergence - wide fixation index, that suggests absence of interbreeding between endemic and any of the invasive species. UP to quite recently the great collection of Birds in the Natural History Museum’ has been singularly deficient in material from the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. This has recently been remedied by the donation of Mr. Butler of the large collection made by hini during a long residence in that country. Mr. Butler was appointed Superintendent of Game Pre- eervatiori to the Sudan Government iii 1901, and retained that post uiitil he retired in 1915. During those yearn he made good use of his opportunities of collecting birds throughout the Sudan, and the collection presented to the Museum consists of over 3100 beautifully prepared skim During his residence in the Sudau he published iu ‘ The Ibis ’ a series of four ‘‘ Contributions to the Ornithology of the Sudan ” between the years 1905 and 1909, in which he described the habits and in many cases unravelled the taxonomy of many of the species he had met with, and these papers are all referred to in the present list. We are much indebted to hiiir for help in drawing up this paper and for notes of the occurrence of several species in the Sudan not contained in the collection presented to the Museum.
