BAGHDAD IRAQ

FOR THE PAST THIRTY-SEVEN YEARS BAGHDAD COLLEGE HAS BEEN PRIVILEGED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EDUCATION OF IRAQI YOUTH. THE WORDS CHOSEN BY ITS FOUNDERS, MosT REVEREND WILLIAM A. RICE, s.J., AND REv. EDWARD F. MADARAS, S.J., TO DESCRIBE THE CoLLEGE WERE: "AN IRAQI ScHooL FOR IRAQI BoYs". THE EDUCATION OF YOUTH PRESENTS A CONTINUAL CHALLENGE TO THOSE ENGAGED IN THE TEACHING PROFESSION. THE INDIVIDUALS WHO ACCEPT THIS CHALLENGE SHOULD HAVE A UNIQUE SENSE OF DEDI CATION, OF UNDERSTANDING, AND OF GENEROSITY. FOR THEM, TEACHING IS MUCH MORE THAN A MERE JOB TO BE DONE. IT IS THEIR LIFE. IT IS WITH A DEEP SENSE OF GRATITUDE THAT WE DEDICATE THIS ISSUE OF "AL-IRAQI" TO THE IRAQI jESUIT FATHERS AND TO THE IRAQI TEACHERS AND STAFF, PAST AND PRESENT, OF BAGHDAD COLLEGE. THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE EDUCATION OF IRAQI YOUTH AT BAGHDAD COLLEGE IS FAR GREATER THAN WORDS CAN EXPRESS. ~ ~1 jl.t.., ~' ,~,~ )~T ,, J J.i

65 A STORM WAR

AKTHAM BADI' SHARIF, 2A ZIAD JUREIDINI, 4A

The sky turned grey and dark Tratata, tratata, And everything was gloomy, The bugles call ... Tratata ... Then all of a sudden I heard a dog bark A mother's tears upon the ground ... And the rain poured down endlessly. Tratata. A wife's parting kiss The wind blew, the thunder rolled, On the soldier's neck, And lightning struck boldly. A tender caress that must last forever ... Trees swayed to and fro On the field While animals fled fearfully. Where men fall like drops of rain By the shore the ocean roared On the ground Tratata, tratata. And waves crashed angrily, The hot, merciless ground While in the sky sea gulls soared Craving blood, High and low screeching scornfully. More blood, more blood ... Tratata. Where life and death are united Tratata. Hanna lies upon the ground, Face fixed in crude surprise ... Blood, more blood ... Tratata. A dog beside him Licks the liquid of life From the master's face, Not knowing where he's gone. Hanna's gone To the land of the unknown ... Blood, more blood ... He did not wait to see his unborn child ... Or kiss his waiting wife goodbye; He had to go upon that ground, The hot, hot merciless ground Which craved his blood ... Tratata. NOISE The scarlet sun Crying "blood" AKTHAM BADI' SHARIF, 2A Upon a red horizon Sets upon lifeless bodies of the field. The crave for blood has gone But Hanna still lies, Rolling of thunder, patter of rain, His dog still laps his flesh, His babe still awaits, Shriek of whistle of an express train. His wife still needs his gentle love. Chirping of birds, humming of bees, How selfish Chop and cut on strong fir trees. To leave his wife and go away! Barks of dogs, gossip of people. And now no one returns. Ring of a bell from a church steeple. No one will pass by The wife and child ... Blowing of wind on a stormy day, Except the bugle call, Screams of children gay in their play. Tratata, tratata, I like noise. To tell his wife to wait no more.

66 Noble feelings and noble deeds make the man. But they come slowly and with pain. Each better stage of our life comes through endless deaths and rebirths. We die to ourselves hundreds of ways to reach truer and finer states of life. Life is made of innumerable departures, changes in conditions, existence and understand ing. And in each change we feel we die to the past in some small way. The first journey is the one from home to primary school, where we are faced for the first time with responsibilities for .our own actions and behavior. Then we realize that we have to leave behind the comfortable "farniente" of childhood, because knowledge and success require all our energies. Time going by, we feel deeper and deeper that only beautiful virtues and achieve ments are worth living for. But the acquiring of these virtues and achievements demands our dying to younger joys to make room for the constant, steady, everyday tasks of study and growth which lead to the pure knowledge of God. But must we forget time spent in College ? No, for these are the building years, and though we must pass through and beyond them, they are years of rare wonder which shall "die" only to give place to greater life.

After I had finished my homework, I felt sleepy. I put out the light and went to bed. In a moment I vanished into my dreams. I found myself in a court. I was both the judge and the criminal. Face to face, judge and criminal, there could be no defense. I knew it was my fault and all the crimes were piled high upon, me. The judge asked many questions about my life. The crim inal's answers were all painful to me. The judge looked first at the list of faults. Then he turned to another page and was amazed to find that my good qualities almost equalled my bad ones. So, I was released from prison and punishment on the promise that I would make more progress in the future. I awoke in a sweat. Perhaps this is not just an amusing story. Perhaps others can benefit from it. Perhaps it means that we must judge our actions ourselves. Perhaps it means that if we judge ourselves we won't need prefects over us. And perhaps, if all of us do what we are supposed to do, even nations will be reformed and make progress.

67 THE CAUSE ALI ZAHID, SD

We must struggle back to Palestine. The now old story is still true. For twenty-five years from various parts of the world, men have come to our land to occupy by force the land that is ours. They say that God had promised our land to them because they are the Chosen People. But, we, too, are sons of Abraham to whom such word was given. And so the Arabs have not given up but LIFE stand against brute force with armed struggle and AMJAD KHUDHIR, 4C faith. "Life is a highway where the milestones are years, And every now and then there is a toll-gate Where you pay your way with tears." Life is a carriage which takes the ones who would overtake it and leaves the ones who could not. Life is a struggle between ourselves and mor tality and evanescence . So we struggle until death with whatever help religion and society can offer to us. Life is a short trip which does not have any savor or value, unless we have friends, friends with whom we can play, whom we trust and love. Life is love and without love we cannot live, as the prophets preached in the past and the songsters sing today. Life is adventure, promise. It can be misery, but it need not be. Life, then, is many things. It differs and changes, and yet it contains all. Through this time on earth it moves, changes and grows, until with God, it becomes EVERYTHING.

75 FIRST YEAR FIRST DAY

§JPORY§

SECONDARY FOOTBALL

In. what must be termed as an impressive season the secondary football team completed a 21 game schedule with 15 wins, 4 ties, and but 2 losses. Responsible for most of the scoring that enabled the team to do so well was Yusuf Daud and Ali al-Zubaidi though they were greatly assisted by the play making of Hrand Essayi and Philip Dawisha. Sabah Azad and Nisan Yuil were the squad's top wingers while Johnson Yuhanna, backed by Kamiran George, Krikor Minasakhan, and Faris Bashoo, headed up a competent offensive line. Goalies Majid Shulji and Shawkat Halabu rounded off the winning combination. One of the main factors in achieving such a successful season was the co-operation among the team members. They handled the ball well, functioning not as individuals but as a unit-something that can only be improved next year when the entire team returns.

SECONDARY FOOTBALL Standing, left to right: Saad Fadhil, Muwaffaq Edward, Hrand Essayi, Sabah Azad, Nisan Yuil, Munir Namu, Faris Nairn, Mr. Albert Baba. Kneeling: Amjad Khudhir, Krikor Minasakhan, Yusuf Daud, Shawkat Halabu, Majid Shulji, Johnson Yuhanna, Kamiran George, Philip Dawisha. INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL Second row, left to right: Thamir Jamil, Mazin al-Bayati, Raad Mahmud, Samir A-Masih, Aprim Yusuf, Sami Hasan, Mr. Albert Baba. First row: Abdulahad Daud, Krikor Taschaian, Safa Hasan, Jan Turabian, Alfred Akram, Talal Jabiru.

INTERMED lATE FOOTBALL

Whenever an outside team first sees the B.C. inter mediate football team they are always surprised at how small the players of the Baghdad College team are. However they are even more surprised at how well they play, especially at the end of the game when these obviously older and physically larger teams find them selves on the short side of the score. Though the team played weekly and won a majority of these contests, one of their most impressive games was a losing effort. Playing in Scouts' Field against boys that almost doubled their size the intermediates jumped to a 2-0 half time lead and looked the better team but finally succumbed to their opponent's strength and fell behind 4-2. Mazin al-Bayati was the team's top scorer and con sidered to be the squad's best player. Samir A-Masih was another good play maker and worked particularly well with Sami Hasan and Thamir J amil. Abdulahad Daud proved to be a very capable defensive man, keeping the line tight in all games. I SECONDARY BASKETBALL Standing : Samir Leyous, Mr. Albert, Rupen Mazhagopian. Kneeling: Clifford Joseph, Muhammad Mahdi, Vahe Kouyoumdjian, Mahmud al-Azzawi, Hagop Manuel.

SECONDARY BASKETBALL

Considering the fact that three-fourths of the team were playing on a school team for the first time, the 1968-1 969 basketball squad made a fine showing more often that not. One reason they did well despite their inexperience was the expert coaching by their new trainer, Mr. Albert Baba. Ala, Hagop, and Samir were the team's high scorers, Mahmud and Muhammad were the principal reboun ers, and Rupen kept the team moving with his passing. Clifford, Salwan, Dhafir, and Ahmad also played regularly. In games against outside teams, how well the team did depended on how well they passed the ball, and on how well they were playing together on that par ticular day. The highlight of the season was the game against a much more experienced team from Jafariya. Although Baghdad College lost the game 80-60, they left the court quite proud of their playing, and showed promise of a strong team next year.
