GRANDFATHERS' CLOCKS: THEIR MAKING AND THEIR MAKERS IN LANCASTER COUNTY, Whilst Lancaster county is not the first or only home of the so-called "Grandfathers' Clock," yet the extent and the excellence of the clock industry in this type of clocks entitle our county to claim special distinction as one of the most noted centres of its production. I, therefore, feel the story of it specially worthy of an enduring place in our annals, and it is with pleasure •and patriotic enthusiasm that I devote the time and research necessary to do justice to the subject that so closely touches the dearest traditions of our old county's social life and surroundings. These old clocks, first bought and used by the forefathers of many of us, have stood for a century or more in hundreds of our homes, faithfully and tirelessly marking the flight of time, in annual succession, for four genera- tions of our sires from the cradle to the grave. Well do they recall to memory and imagination the joys and sorrows, the hopes and disappointments, the successes and failures, the ioves and the hates, hours of anguish, thrills of happiness and pleasure, that have gone into and went to make up the lives of the lines of humanity that have scanned their faces to know and note the minutes and the hours that have made the years of each succeeding life. There is a strong human element in the existence of all such clocks, and that human appeal to our thoughts and memories is doubly intensified when we know that we are looking upon a clock that has thus spanned the lives of our very own flesh and blood from the beginning. -

For more than 600 years, it had been worked on by many people, including Galileo, Hooke and Huygens. Needless to say, there have been many ingenious inventions that transcend time. Even with the dominance of the quartz watch today, the mechanical watch and clock still fascinates millions of people around the, world and its production continues to grow. It is estimated that the world annual production of the mechanical watch and clock is at least 10 billion USD per year and growing. Therefore, studying the mechanical watch and clock is not only of scientific value but also has an economic incentive. Never- theless, this book is not about the design and manufacturing of the mechanical watch and clock. Instead, it concerns only the mechanics of the mechanical watch and clock. -

The Early History of Chronometers : A Background Study Related to the Voyages of Cook, Bligh, and Vancouver SAMUEL L. MAGE Y The purpose of this paper is to outline the historical developments relat ing to the chronometer, which played so crucial a part in the voyages of discovery made by Cook, Bligh and Vancouver. The inventor of the first successful chronometer — a technological marvel of precision watchmak ing — was John Harrison. His most famous model was the prize-winning H4 of 1759. Kendall's copy of this, known as Ki, helped Cook to plot the first charts of New Zealand and Australia. Ki was also used by Van couver, while K2 was once carried by Bligh on the Bounty.1 It is generally well known that in 1714 the British Admiralty offered a prize of twenty thousand pounds (possibly a million dollars in modern terms) for a method that could determine longitude on board a ship to within half a degree (or approximately thirty miles) on a passage to the West Indies. It is, however, less well appreciated how important a part the need for deter mining longitude had already played in the process of developing accurate clocks and watches for use on land as well as on the sea. Commander Waters has pointed out that "By about 1254 the Medi terranean seaman" knew his "direction between places to within less than 30 of arc", as well as his distances; "By about 1275 ... he had also a remarkably accurate sea chart of the whole of the Mediterranean and Black Sea coastlines", together with the sea compass and relevant table.2 Though there are claims that the sea compass was a European inven tion of slightly earlier date, Price feels that the use of the loadstone in navigation was probably of Chinese origin. -

Timekeeping and astronomy were complementary methods for ascertaining longitude; they were carried out using chronometers and by taking lunar observations. The article explains who was responsible for handling the astronomical readings on the expedition; the performance of the chronometers used; Flinders’s comparisons of the longitudinal readings with the work of previous navigators; and the reasons why dissemination of the longitudes taken during the voyage was delayed. The article shows how the combined use of chronometers and lunar observations helped Flinders to achieve scientific accuracy in his charting of coastal Australia in the atlas to his major work entitled A Voyage to Terra Australis. Shop signs are of great antiquity: it is quite probable that they were employed by the great nations of ancient times to denote their trades, and to help the inhabitants of cities and towns to find out where such and such a com- modity was to be obtained. We have no actual record of their being used by the old Egyptians or other peoples of the Eastern world ; but it is highly probable that the trades- men of those times did employ them, and placed some sort of inscription over their doors to indicate what they dealt in. The Greeks, however, no doubt did employ the sign- board, as Larwood and Hotten, in their History of Sign- boards, give the following quotation from Athenteus: " He hung the well known sign in front of his house." ο σ When we arrive at Eoman times, there is ample evidence to prove that they were largely employed in all their towns.
