Mit ihrer unendlichen Hilfe und Geduld haben sie die Entstehung dieser Arbeit auf jedem nur denkbaren Weg unterstützt und ihre Fertigstellung erst ermöglicht. 2 1 Putting the Project on the Map Imagining a broad map of Western academia, one can find a plethora of different disciplines, objects of research and possible approaches to these topics. Although all of these items are somehow interrelated with one another, their ultimate overlap is constituted by one specific element: knowledge. The construction, circulation and continuous development of knowledge is the starting as well as the terminal point, the alpha and omega of Western academic thinking. Nevertheless, with its focus on Western academia this map is spatially limited, as it only covers the territory of the West – but what about the rest? Where are non-Western academic traditions and disciplines to be found? And in what way are the West and the rest connected to each other in scholarly terms? These fundamental reflections on the overall design and status of Western scholarship mark the beginning of the following study, which sets out to approach Aboriginal manifestations of spatial knowledge with the help of contemporary indigenous Australian novels while being situated within non-indigenous, European academic contexts. In order to carry out this endeavour in an adequate manner1, it is crucial to acknowledge, first of all, that [t]he European world view tends to separate the spiritual, natural and human domains whose characteristics and attributes are ever open to challenge, debate and reinterpretation. In this lies [an] important distinction between the two cultural traditions as expressed in attitudes towards knowledge. In the Aboriginal world view, knowledge is an extension of the cosmic order and comprises the accumulated wisdom of the group since time immemorial, handed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. (Gostin/Chong 1994: 123) While Western perceptions of the world clearly categorise knowledge, Aboriginal peoples understand their existence as related to a more holistic system of knowledge free of clear-cut classifications. Therefore, this basic difference is one of the fundamental concepts that has to be kept in mind when examining indigenous knowledge, here in relation to literary representations of spatiality, from a non-indigenous point of view. It is also important to see these differences not as a legitimation for hierarchies or as an obstacle, but to question ways in which it is possible to approach Aboriginal knowledge nonetheless. The chain of events begins when Garibooli, a young Aboriginal girl, is removed by authorities in 1918, never to be reunited with her family. The subsequent search for identity by the generations of children stemming from Garibooli reveals scars within the Aboriginal community that can never be healed completely. Behrendt cleverly shows this search for identity and belonging in a colonial world by following the children and grandchildren of Garibooli, as Garibooli was made to feel too ashamed to pass on her heritage to her progeny. The numerous characters give human faces and experiences to a highly politicised issue in contemporary Australian society, making Home a solid text in which to explore these issues in the classroom.

    Disputed Territories as Sites of Possibility: Kim Scott's Writing and the Wirlomin Noongar Language and Stories Project Natalie Quinlivan BA International Studies, BA Communications (Creative Writing), MA English A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences School of Literature, Art and Media University of Sydney April 2019 Abstract Kim Scott was the first Aboriginal author to win the Miles Franklin Literary Award in 2000 for Benang, an award he won again in 2011 for That Deadman Dance. Yet despite these national accolades, Scott interrogates the very categories of Australian and Indigenous literatures to which his work is subjected. His writing reimagines, incorporates and challenges colonial ways of thinking about people and place. This thesis reveals the provocative proposal running through Scott’s collected works and projects that contemporary Australian society (and literature) should be grafted onto regional Aboriginal languages and stories as a way to express a national sense of “who we are and what we might be”. Scott’s vision of a truly postcolonial Australia and literature is articulated through his collected writings which form a network of social, historical, political and personal narratives. This thesis traces how Scott’s writing and the Wirlomin Noongar Language and Stories Project (Wirlomin Project) reconfigure colonial power relationships in the disputed territories of place, language, history, identity and the globalised world of literature. Ultimately, Scott intends to create an empowered Noongar position in cross-cultural exchange and does so by disrupting the fixed categories inherent in these territories; territories constructed during the colonising and nationalising of Australia.

    A Sociology of the Chick Lit of Anita Heiss By Fiannuala Morgan Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of Master of Arts (Thesis only) School of Culture and Communication, University of Melbourne 1 Abstract Wiradjuri woman, Anita Heiss, is arguably one of the first Australian authors of popular fiction. Since 2007, she has published across a diversity of genres including chick lit, contemporary women’s fiction, romance, memoir and children’s literature. A focus on the political characterises her work; and her identity as an author is both supplemented and complemented by her roles as an academic, activist and public intellectual. Heiss has discussed genre as a means of targeting specific audiences that may be less engaged with Indigenous affairs, and positions her novels as educative but not didactic. There remains, however, some ambivalence about the significance of the role that genre plays in her literature as well as for the diverse and differentiated audience that she attracts. The aims of this thesis then are two-fold: firstly, to present a complication of academic conceptions of genre, then to use this discussion to explore the social significance of Heiss’ literature. My focus is Heiss’ first four chick lit novels: Not Meeting Mr Right (2007), Avoiding Mr Right (2008), Manhattan Dreaming (2010) and Paris Dreaming (2011). Scholarship in the field leans toward an understanding that the racial politics of non-white articulations of the chick lit genre are invariably incompatible with the basic formula of chick lit texts. My thesis proposes a methodological shift from the dominant mode of ideological analysis to one that is largely focused on reader response.

SHELLEY BIELEFELD* I INTRODUCTION Like other colonial countries, Australia has long governed its First Peoples with intrusive paternalism. Paternalistic governance has created ongoing problems for Australia’s First Peoples, also referred to in national discourse as Indigenous peoples and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 1 Such paternalism has created specific difficulties for Indigenous women who have been subject to surveillance and controlled by colonialism in every sphere of their lives. This article will explore some of these forms of surveillance and argue that new forms of paternalism ushered in by ‘the global ascendance of neo- liberal policies and discourses’2 have reproduced similar racialised and gendered impacts for Indigenous women as were apparent in previous policies.     humanities Article Dry Country, Wet City: A World-Ecological Reading of Drought in Thea Astley’s Drylands Ashley Cahillane Discipline of English, National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland; [email protected] Received: 6 January 2020; Accepted: 16 July 2020; Published: 11 August 2020 Abstract: Using a postcolonial and world-ecological framework, this article analyses the representation of water as an energy source in Thea Astley’s last and most critically acclaimed novel Drylands (1999). As environmental historians have argued, the colonial, and later capitalist, settlement of Australia, particularly the arid interior, was dependent on securing freshwater sources—a historical process that showed little regard for ecological impact or water justice until recent times. Drylands’ engagement with this history will be considered in relation to Michael Cathcart’s concept of ‘water dreaming’ (2010): the way in which water became reimagined after colonization to signify the prospect of economic growth and the consolidation of settler belonging. Drylands self-consciously incorporates predominant modes of ‘water dreaming’ into its narrative, yet resists reducing water to a passive resource. This happens on the level of both content and form: while its theme of drought-induced migration is critical of the past, present, and future social and ecological effects of the reckless extraction of freshwater, its nonlinear plot and hybrid form as a montage of short stories work to undermine the dominant anthropocentric colonial narratives that underline technocratic water cultivation. Reviewed by Jean-François VERNAY Tim Winton has written his way to become the darling of Australian readers who enjoy his rich prose evocative of the south-western landscape which he calls home. He can be regarded as a left-leaning writer who has a close affinity with the people and es- pecially the land which he celebrates in his stories. His coastal narratives invariably viv- idly depict rural communities functioning in harmony with the beach culture. Winton’s focus is domestic, if not personal, fathoming the cultural and psychological impact of the Australian land.

    Agrégation 2021 Alexis Wright, Carpentaria Pistes de réflexion et bibliographie proposées par Marilyne Brun (Université de Lorraine) et Estelle Castro-Koshy (James Cook University) Née en 1950, Alexis Wright est une écrivaine aborigène originaire du golfe de Carpentarie (situé au nord-ouest du Queensland et nord-est du Territoire du Nord) en Australie. Elle a écrit trois romans (Plains of Promise (1997), Carpentaria (Giramondo, 2006) et The Swan Book (2013)), un recueil de nouvelles (Le Pacte du serpent arc-en-ciel (2002)), et quatre ouvrages de non-fiction (Grog War (1997), Take Power (1998), Croire en l’incroyable (2000), Tracker (2017)). Deux de ses ouvrages n’ont été publiés qu’en français : Le Pacte du serpent arc-en-ciel et Croire en l’incroyable. Wright fait partie du peuple waanyi et est connue pour sa défense active des droits, notamment fonciers, des Aborigènes en Australie, ainsi que pour ses dénonciations de certaines politiques envers les Aborigènes, telle que la Northern Territory Intervention – une série de mesures discriminantes ciblant les Aborigènes dans le Territoire du Nord qui a restreint leurs droits civiques et obligé des communautés aborigènes à céder leurs terres pour des périodes déterminées – officiellement présentée comme une réponse à une situation de crise sociale et sanitaire, mise en place par le gouvernement du Premier Ministre John Howard en 2007, et annoncée le jour où Carpentaria reçut le Miles Franklin Award, prestigieux prix littéraire de fiction. Alexis Wright détient la chaire Boisbouvier de littérature australienne à l’Université de Melbourne. Elle est membre du projet « Other Worlds - Forms of World Literature » financé par le Australian Research Council.
