FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY Family Trip to Israel with Rabbi Danny Rabbi Danny Burkeman and Lindsay POWTY Ganci Israel Trip 2015 How do you sum up a 10 day trip to Israel?

It is almost impossible to do justice to the trip in words, because so much of it is about the feelings that this place can inspire in people. Instead I want to share three experiences.

On our first Friday we set out to explore the city of Tel Aviv. As part of this tour we made our way to Levinsky Street, in south Tel Aviv, an area that tourists rarely visit. Taking our group to this neighborhood, I was able to share my Tel Aviv, an area I consider, my Israel. In our New York con- text, you can think of this neighborhood like the Lower East Side, the original area where Jews built up the city. On Friday mornings it is a place filled with locals trying to get all of their shopping done in time for Shabbat, when virtually every- thing will be closed.

It was in this neighborhood that my great-grandparents settled, after arriving in Palestine (as it was then called) from Romania and Austria respectively. These are the streets where they had their shops and these are the streets that I still walk grandfather) stopping)סבא with my Saba in virtually every shop for him to say hello to all of his friends. ABOUT HAND IN HAND Hand in Hand is a network of integrated schools and shared communities serving Arab and Jewish citizens of Israel. Its aim is to build peace, partnership and coexistence between Arabs and Jews in Israel and help reconciliation, respect and understanding between these two communities.

While 20% of Israeli citizens are Arab and 80% are Jewish, Arabs and Jews lead almost completely segregated lives there. This separation is one of the things that helps perpetuate the conflict. Hand in Hand has created a viable new model of edu- cation within Israel’s public school system: integrated bilingual schools where Jewish and Arab children and teens can learn together in the same classroom and together with their families and the wider community, help build a more shared society.

Starting with only 50 students in 1998, Hand in Hand now has five schools with over 1200 children enrolled. Hand in Hand works in collaboration with Israel’s Ministry of Education and local educational leadership. Hand in Hand partners with supporters around the world including synagogues, churches, mosques, and community institutions. For more information please visit www.handinhandk12.org
