Vk-1602 Leopard X2 · Jagd E-50 X2 · Tiger II X2 · Jagdtiger X2 · Me-264 Bomber X2 GLOBALCOMMAND SERIES AMERIKA™- GLOBAL WAR COMPANION A Global War 2nd Edition Expansion Late in the war Germany developed a number of advanced weapon designs, many of which never made it past the prototype stage. Now its time to “Bring in the Heavies” and let these weapons loose on the battlefield. The units in this set were originally released as Kickstarter bonus units to Historical Board Gaming’s Amerika™. These rules are designed for Global War -2nd Edition. This is expansion is designated as “BIH” for reference in future rule sets. 2 German Units · Ho-229 Gotha x2 · E-555 x2 · Vk-4502 x2 · Maus Heavy Tank x2 · Vk-1602 Leopard x2 · Jagd E-50 x2 · Tiger II x2 · Jagdtiger x2 · Me-264 Bomber x2 3 BIH 1.0 Technological Development & Weapons Acquisition: There are two ways in which a nation may acquire the ability to purchase the units in this set. These are listed under Availability section of each unit. By Availability Date: Some units simply become available for purchase on certain dates. Since each game year consists of two turns, these are listed as January or July of the game year (e.g. July of 1945 etc.). Thus the first turn of a standard World War II game is July 1939, the second turn January 1940 etc… By Technological Development: Some units require certain technology to be developed at which point they become available for purchase You will notice that some units only require a few stages of development and can thus be built before you fully acquire that technology (e.g. the VK04502 requires Stage 3 Heavy Armor). Horton Ho-229 [Jet Fighter-Bomber] The Horton Ho-229 “Gotha” was a prototype flying wing jet fighter-bomber. The Gotha could carry air-to-ground rockets or 1,100lbs of ordinance to a range of approximately 1,000 miles. Unit Attack Defense Move Cost Ho-229 Fighter 8 (4)* 8 (4)* 4 12 Ho-229 Tac Bomber 8 5 4 12 *(Value) for strategic bombing interception 4 Availability: The Ho-229 can be purchased after Germany has developed Jet Aircraft and built at least 3 jets of any kind. Fighter- Bomber: At the beginning of each combat in which it will fight, the German player must designate the Ho-229 as flying as a fighter or a tactical bomber and use the statistics for the remainder of the combat. When flying as a fighter the Gotha has all statistics and abilities of a fighter. Target Selection: When flying as a tactical bomber, the Ho-229 can select which target the defender chooses as a casualty if it’s Attack roll is 1-3. Arado E-555 [Jet Long Range Strategic Bomber] The Arado E-555 was developed in response to a German request for a bomber that could strike the United States from Europe. The E-555 was a flying wing bomber design with a payload between 8,000 and 13,000lbs. Various configurations were designed with the longest range being about 3,100 miles – much less than was needed to strike America and return. The project’s designs were too expensive to be viable and never went into production. Unit Attack Defense Move Cost Arado E-555 Carpet Bombing (2)* 2 9 13 * (Value) for strategic bombing interception Availability: The Arado E-555 is available to build after Germany has developed Jet Aircraft and Long Range Aircraft. Fast Bomber: When a fast bomber is the only viable target of propeller driven (non-jet) fighters, their interception value is reduced by 1. Strategic Bomber: The E-555-1 has all the capabilities of a strategic bomber. 5 VK-4502 [Heavy Tank] The VK-4502 was a heavy tank design that was never produced. The initial designs called for a 57-ton vehicle mounting an 88mm main gun. The project was canceled as better designs were needed to counter Allied tanks. Unit Attack Defense Move Cost VK-4502 7 6 2 7 Availability: When Germany has stage 3 heavy tank technology. Blitz: The VK-4502 may blitz. Maus [Super Heavy Armor] The Maus was a German Super-Heavy tank. The Maus was exceptionally slow, both because it was heavy and because it could not cross most small road bridges in the European countryside. The Maus had a 128mm main armament and a coaxially mounted 75mm secondary gun. Unit Attack Defense Move Cost Maus 9 4 1 9 Availability: The Maus is available after Germany develops Heavy Armor. Target Selection: 1-2 (armor). Super Heavy: The Maus cannot be the subject of target selection by ground units. The Maus may not blitz. 6 VK-1602 Leopard [Advanced Light Armor] The VK-1602 Leopard was a German reconnaissance vehicle that never advanced beyond the prototype stage. The vehicle had sloped frontal armor but was under- gunned with a 50mm main armament that would be ineffective against Soviet tanks. This unit represents an advanced light armor unit with improved vehicles and tactics. Unit Attack Defense Move Cost VK-1602 Leopard 4 4 2 5 Availability: The VK-1602 Leopard is available July 1943 so long as Germany has at least stage 3 Heavy Armor. Blitz: Unlike other light armor, the VK-1602 may blitz. JagD E-50 [Advanced Armor] The JagD E-50 was intended as a replacement for the Tiger I and Panther tanks. The E-50 weighted 75 tons and could travel about 40km/hour. The tank would have been equipped with the latest German range-finding and night vision equipment. Unit Attack Defense Move Cost JagD E-50 8 8 2 8 Availability: When Germany has heavy tank technology and has built 3 heavy tanks of any kind. Blitz: The E-50 May Blitz Target Selection: 1-2 (Armor-Class Units) 7 Jagdtiger [Advanced Tank Destroyer] The Jagdtiger was a heavy tank destroyer fielded by Germany during World War II. The enormous 71-ton vehicle was armed with a 128mm main gun capable of taking out anything on the battlefield. The power and range of this gun was unmatched. Fortunately for the Allies, only 88 were built by wars-end. Unit Attack Defense Move Cost Jagd Tiger 7 7 2 8 Availability: When Germany has heavy tank technology and has built 3 heavy tanks. Blitz: The Jagdtiger may not blitz Target Selection: 1-3 (Armor-Class Units) First Strike: The Jagdtiger has first strike if there is at least one enemy armor-class unit that is a viable target. Tiger II [Heavy Armor] The Tiger II or King Tiger was an extremely advanced German tank design and one of the most feared weapons of World War II. The King Tiger had an 88mm main gun which could take out almost any tank fielded by the Allies. Unit Attack Defense Move Cost Tiger II 9 9 2 12 Availability: After Germany has developed heavy armor and completed construction of 4 Tiger IE it may begin to build Tiger II. Blitz: The Tiger II may blitz. Target Selection: 1-3 (armor-class units). 8 Me-264 Strategic Bomber Me-264 Bomber: While the original design of the Me-264 was for long range maritime reconnaissance and convoy interdiction bomber, the Me-264 was also in competition for the Amerika-bomber project. The bomber could make 8,947 miles – enough for a round trip to Amerika with a 6,614lb bomb load. Unit Attack Defense Move Cost Me-264 Strategic Carpet Bombing (1)* 2 24 18 * (Value) for strategic bombing interception Availability: The Me-264 is available when Germany has long-range aircraft and has built at least 3 other long-range aircraft Strategic Bombing: The Me-264 is a standard long-range strategic bomber. Me-264 Maritime Version Unit Attack Defense Move Cost Me-264 Maritime 5 5 24 16 Availability: The Me-264 is available when Germany has long range aircraft and has built at least three other long range aircraft. Maritime Use: The Me-264 can be used as a maritime patrol aircraft. It must be designated as such prior to moving. If the Me-264 is on combat air patrol is remains a maritime bomber until it lands again and can be redesigned. Naval Use: The Me-264’s attack/defense value as a maritime bomber may only be used to cause casualties to naval targets. It defends against an attacking aircraft at “1”. Combat Air Patrol Range: 3 Convoy Raider: The Me-264 may engage in convoy raiding with a +1 bonus. 9 Unit Att Def Mv Cost Notes Avail: After building 3 Jet Fighters. Fighter- Bomber: Flies as either. • Tiger Tank, to Be Ready for Production in February 1943
CONTENTS Introduction Chronology Design and Development Technical Specifications Crew Training and Organisation Tigers vs Allied Armour Conclusion Glossary and Abbreviations INTRODUCTION Tigers on the Eastern Front, between Bielgorod and Orel, July 1943. (Photo by Roger Viollet/Getty Images) The Tiger I and II are arguably the most famous tanks of World War II, if not the most famous tanks in the entire history of armoured warfare. The Tiger I was, perhaps surprisingly for a tank which achieved such a reputation, quickly designed utilising components that had been partially tested in previous heavy Panzers. The need for a new and better-armoured heavy tank that would be successful in combating British tanks and anti-tank guns had become increasingly evident to the Germans in the first years of the war. Underlining the need for an improved tank, the Soviet T-34 medium tank, encountered after the Nazi invasion of Russia on 22 June 1941, shocked the Germans with its thick, sloped skin, excellent mobility, and powerful armament. Following the appearance of the T-34 and the heavy Soviet KV-1, the design and production of an effective heavy Panzer was pursued with increased urgency. By the time the first models rolled off the production line in August 1942, the Tiger I featured extremely thick armour, providing it with what was at that time a formidable level of battlefield survivability. It also mounted a powerful long-barrelled 8.8cm gun that could at normal combat ranges defeat virtually every enemy tank then in existence. The launch of Tiger II production in January 1944 allowed the deployment of the most powerful combat tank during the war.
