2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford, Napa Valley
2018 CABERNET SAUVIGNON RUTHERFORD, NAPA VALLEY A BRIEF HIS TORY For decades, it has been our goal to produce a Rutherford AVA, estate- grown Cabernet Sauvignon. Inspired by the early Cabernets of Inglenook and Beaulieu Vineyard, we’ve spent the past 20 years finding, farming and obtaining highly sought after land in Rutherford—with particular attention to the Rutherford Bench—to perfect our craft. It all began with the acquisition of the Red Barn Vineyard in 1994. This prime location provided us with 40 acres of soil perfectly suited to grow Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and a century-old facility in which we would become Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon producers for the first time. Then Frank Leeds—longtime Frog’s Leap Vineyardist—agreed to a partnership with his family’s Chavez Leeds Vineyard. Situated on the iconic Rutherford Bench, this vineyard gave us our first real taste of how complex and connected dry-farmed, organically-grown Cabernet Sauvignon from this storied part of the appellation could be. In 2007, we purchased the historic Rossi Vineyard located in the very heart of the Rutherford Bench. This 50 acre vineyard was purchased by the Rossi family in 1906 and is located only a stone’s throw away from the two vineyards that originally inspired us. ABOUT THE WINE There is very little doubt that 2018 is going to go down as one of the best and most classic Cabernet vintages in the Napa Valley in recent memory. The Frog’s Leap Estate Grown will show you why. Superb balance, pure Rutherford aromas and a natural density achieved only in the best year. -

If you drink no Noir, you Pinot Noir Volume 9, Issue 39 March 31, 2014 Adventures on the Pinot Trail: World of Pinot Noir - The Seminars On February 27, 2014, I hit the Pinot Trail to attend four major events in California. Like the song, “Sugartime,” from the 1950s sung by the McGuire Sisters, it was “Sugar (Pinot) in the morning, Sugar (Pinot) in the evening, Sugar (Pinot) at suppertime. Be my little sugar, And love me (Pinot) all the time.” The trail first led me to Santa Barbara for the 14th Annual World of Pinot Noir, then to San Francisco for three more memorable events: a special retrospective tasting of the wines of Ted Lemon titled “30 Years of Winemaking, 20 years of Littorai,” at Jardiniere restaurant on March 2, Affairs of the Vine Pinot Noir Summit at The Golden Gate Club on March 9, and the In Pursuit of Balance seminars and tasting at Bluxome Street Winery on March 10. I will give a full report on each stop along the Pinot Trail in this issue and those to follow, highlighting some of the special wines I tasted. Some have accused me of being a Pinot pimp and rightfully so. One of my readers told me when I asked him what he had been drinking, “As far as what I am drinking, it’s Pinot you bastard, and it’s your damn fault. Now I empty my bank account at wineries nobody has ever heard of, on wines nobody has ever drank except you, you pr**k. You have ruined me....and I love it.” The World of Pinot Noir successfully relocated this year from its long-standing home in Shell Beach to the Bacara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara. -

Finally, in 2007, we purchased the historic Rossi Vineyard located in the very heart of the Rutherford Bench. This 50 acre vineyard was purchased by the Rossi family in 1906 and is located only a stone’s throw away from the two vineyards that originally inspired us. Now mostly planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc the Rossi Vineyard completed the picture by yielding high quality Rutherford grapes for an all estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon to stand with our predecessors. -

Democratizing Visions of Luxury and the Good Life in California Wine Country: Wine Tourism from Repeal to the Eve of the “Wine Revolution” Stephanie Dyer This paper describes the origins of California wine tourism in the era before the “wine revolution,” when table wine consumption begins to take off in the United State. After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, wine tourism initially developed in response to state legal exemptions to the national three-tier system of alcohol distribution that allowed California wineries to conduct retail sales on site. Most wineries encouraged tourism primarily to educate alcohol distributors and retailers as well as consumers in order to help build the market for table wine; a few wineries developed it as a significant outlet for retail sales. The combination of activities now considered standard elements in the wine tourism industry – touring wineries, tasting their products, and purchasing them on site – first emerged at Charles Krug winery in 1950. These practices were encouraged by the Wine Institute and adapted industry wide by 1962, the year table wine consumption began to dominate the California wine market. My goal in this project is to understand the evolution of California wine tourism from its origins as a minor part of wine industry promotion in the wake of Prohibition’s repeal into an increasingly important retail sector in its own right by the late 20th century. Wine is one of those rare global commodities whose production remains tied to particular locations, making it a natural fit for tourism. 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Vineyard Georges III Rutherford - Napa Valley THE VINEYARD Sojourn sources Cabernet Sauvignon Clone 337 grapes from the renowned F-Block within Vineyard Georges III in Rutherford. Soils are primarily sandy loam, with a fair amount of rock from the old creek bed that runs through F-Block. This vineyard is the former Beaulieu Vineyard No. 3, which was originally planted by Georges de Latour of Beaulieu in 1928. The property is located adjacent to the Caymus Winery between Conn Creek Road and Silverado Trail. WINEMAKER NOTES The 2015 vintage started with a bang – an unusually warm winter and dry spring promoted early bud-break, with severe drought conditions continuing throughout the growing season. Cabernet Sauvignon responded by producing loose clusters and smaller berries, with an abundance of flavor and ripe tannins. It was one of the earliest harvests on record with lower than average yields. The resulting wines display tremendous finesse, depth and aromatic intensity. Vineyard Georges III basked in the hot dry conditions, and the fruit ripened naturally to a condition of exceptional flavors and ripe tannins. The resulting wine is bold and rich, with ample structure. In 2015 we picked F-Block in two separate sweeps, taking the ripe clusters first and letting the others hang longer to reach optimal maturity. The individual components were then blended to create a beautifully balanced Cabernet Sauvignon with silky smooth textures that showcase the classic Rutherford Dust. During the primary period of historical significance the To-Kalon Vineyard encompassed approximately 500 acres. The boundaries included all vineyard land west of State Highway 29 bordered by the base of the Mayacamas Mountains to the east, its southern edge being the Oakville Grade Road and northern boundary at the division between the Oakville and Rutherford American Viticultural Areas.1 In 1944, additional To-Kalon Vineyard acreage was annexed by then owner Martin Stelling Jr. His purchase of the adjoining Doak/McGill Ranch extended To-Kalon south of the Oakville Grade Road and To-Kalon Creek into a portion of the historic Far Niente Winery. The present day extension is bordered on the east by State Highway 29 and the south by Dwyer Road. The western boundary follows Stelling Creek, which originates in the Halter Valley watershed and excludes the UC Davis South Vineyard, 1250 Oakville Grade Road and Far Niente properties. Today, To-Kalon gross parcel size measures 825 acres of which approximately 678 are planted to vineyard.
