To remain responsive, the sector is developing new models and approaches. Partnerships between higher education, further education, employers and other parts of the tertiary education system are one such approach. УДК811.111:378/4(410) Predko A., Lichevskaya S. Red Brick Universities Belarusian National Technical University Minsk, Belarus The UK has several types of universities. The first type is ancient universities. They were founded before the 17th century. This type includes universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and so on. The process of admission to these universities is so hard. The second type of Universities is red-brick ones. They are located in Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds. As you could guess, they are built of red bricks. Red Brick Universities is the name for the union of six prestigious British universities located in large industrial cities. The peculiarity of the new educational institutions was that they accepted students without regard to their origin, social status. In addition, they focused on applied science and technology, that is, they sought to inculcate skills necessary for real life to students, preferring practical knowledge rather than theoretical knowledge. Now Red Brick Universities are also included in the prestigious Russell Group – the union of the 20 best English universities. Who are the red brick universities? There has been a list of official orders before the First World War. These institutions are all evolved from specialized industrial cities. The six are: 1) University of Birmingham; 2) University of Bristol; 3) University of Leeds; 4) University of Liverpool; 5) University of Manchester; 6) University of Sheffield [1]. 100 Origins of the term and use The term ‗red brick‘ or ‗redbrick‘ was first coined by Edgar Allison Peers, a professor of Spanish at the University of Liverpool, to describe the civic universities, while using the pseudonym "Bruce Truscot" in his 1943 book "Redbrick University".

Jackie Goes Home Young Working-Class Women: Higher Education, Employment and Social (Re)Alignment Laura Jayne Bentley, BA (Hons) A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of the West of England, Bristol for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts, Creative Industries and Education Department of Education and Childhood Supervised by Associate Professor Richard Waller and Professor Harriet Bradley February 2020 Word count: 83,920 i Abstract This thesis builds on and contributes to work in the field of sociology of education and employment. It provides an extension to a research agenda which has sought to examine how young people’s transitions from ‘undergraduate’ to ‘graduate’ are ‘classed’ processes, an interest of some academics over the previous twenty-five years (Friedman and Laurison, 2019; Ingram and Allen, 2018; Bathmaker et al., 2016; Burke, 2016a; Purcell et al., 2012; Tomlinson, 2007; Brown and Hesketh, 2004; Brown and Scase, 1994). My extension and claim to originality are that until now little work has considered how young working-class women experience such a transition as a classed and gendered process. When analysing the narratives of fifteen young working-class women, I employed a Bourdieusian theoretical framework. Through this qualitative study, I found that most of the working-class women’s aspirations are borne out of their ‘experiential capital’ (Bradley and Ingram, 2012). Their graduate identity construction practices and the characteristics of their transitions out of higher education were directly linked to the different quantity and composition of capital within their remit and the (mis)recognition of this within various fields.

PART 2 THE CAMPUS IN CONTEXT OPPORTUNITIES + CONSTRAINTS 15 DRAFT for consultation Autumn 2014 THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD MASTERPLAN 2.1 Location The University of Sheffield central campus is located on A61 the west slopes of the city centre. The campus forms a city gateway characterised by a change from leafy suburbia to a more built up urban environment. The central campus is often identified as sitting within the St George’s Quarter of the city, A61 though reaches beyond this quarter in all directions, and as such has highly permeable boundaries. The central campus is divided by Upper Hanover Street, a north-south section of the A61 city ring road, and further divided by significant east-west roads A57 to M1 Western Bank and Broad Lane. The resulting campus zones are known as the east, north and west campus. The academic and social shape of these is described in later sections. On foot, the centre of the campus is approximately 15 minutes from the city centre, and 25 minutes from Midland Rail Station, the Bus Station and Sheffield Hallam University, which A57 A61 are east of the city centre. • The Changing Academic Workplace
The changing academic workplace Andrew Harrison and Antonia Cairns DEGW UK Ltd Published in 2008 as part of ‘Effective Spaces for Working in Higher and Further Education’, a research study undertaken by DEGW on behalf of the University of Strathclyde and funded by the Scottish Funding Council. The changing academic workplace. Andrew Harrison and Antonia Cairns DEGW UK Ltd [email protected] [email protected] INTRODUCTION Changes in teaching methods, the nature of the curriculum, the size and composition of the student population and the impact of information technology across every facet of university life are all challenging the historic models of what a university is and how it sits within the fabric of the city or community within which it is located. Approaches to learning in educational settings are changing. Traditional teacher-centred models, where good teaching is conceptualised as the passing on of sound academic, practical, or vocational knowledge, are being replaced with student-centred approaches which emphasize the construction of knowledge through shared situations. 1 The Scottish Funding Council’s Spaces for Learning (2006) report cited Barr and Tagg’s (1995) description of this as a shift from an ‘instruction paradigm’ to a ‘learning paradigm’ that has changed the role of the higher and further education institution from ‘a place of instruction’ to ‘a place to produce learning’, driven in part by educational requirements. The context of these changes is the shift to a knowledge-driven economy driving demand for a more qualified, highly skilled, creative and flexible workforce. There is less emphasis on factual knowledge, and more on the ability to think critically and solve complex problems.

Of course I knew that, given its extent in society, discrimination would exist in our universities. What I was not prepared for was the patchy approach to action to bring about change. Some universities have been slow in recognising the scale of the challenge and in committing to making the changes required. Others have made significant progress in narrowing the gap. We face significant challenges in terms of representation, pedagogy, curriculum reform and student experience. BAME students do not do as well at university compared with their White counterparts – the latest statistics show a 13% attainment gap.
