  • Jeffrey Sachs Reith Lectures 2007: Bursting at the Seams
Jeffrey Sachs Reith Lectures 2007: Bursting at the Seams Lecture 1: Bursting at the Seams Recorded at the Royal Society, London SUE LAWLEY: Hello and welcome to the Royal Society in London, a place where, since its foundation in 1660, great minds have gathered to discuss the important scientific issues of the day. It's a fitting place to introduce this year's Reith lecturer, a man who believes we need a new enlightenment to solve many of the world's problems. The American press has hailed him as one of the world's most influential people, a plaudit due in some measure no doubt to the fact that he's not afraid to put his theories to the test. Like one of his great heroes, John Maynard Keynes, he's moved between the academic life and politics, working successfully with governments in South America and Eastern Europe to help restore their broken economies. In this series of Reith Lectures he'll be explaining how he believes that with global co-operation our resources can be harnessed to create a more equal and harmonious world. If we cannot achieve this, he says, we will face catastrophe; we'll simply be overwhelmed by disease, hunger, pollution, and the clash of civilisations. In this, the first of his series of five lectures, he begins by setting the scene, describing an over-populated world on the brink of devastating change, a world that, as the title of the lecture says, is bursting at the seams. Ladies and gentlemen will you please welcome the BBC's Reith Lecturer 2007 - Jeffrey Sachs.

  • The Spice Girls As a Case Study for Intersections Between Popular
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Department of Politics and Government "Chicas to the Front": The Spice Girls as a Case Study for Intersections between Popular Culture and Feminism Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree Maayan Padan Under the Supervision of Prof. Dani Filc and Dr. Catherine Rottenberg January 2017 I II Abstract Recent years have seen the emergence of a new analytical category in the field of critical media and cultural studies – Post-feminism. This category is claimed to be a sensibility, in which feminist notions are brought to center of attention in various venues only to be treated as ridiculous, irrelevant and unattractive. At the expense of radical feminism political agenda, a message of individualism and consumerism is stressed, transforming every aspect of life into a commodity. Post-feminism draws its prominence mostly from girls and young women, as it promises them an individual subjectivity, if only they renounce collective political demands. Many scholars argue that one of the main sites of post-feminism to operate is mainstream popular culture, due to its commercial character. This argument derives from the analysis of the moment of decoding messages from popular culture's texts. This study examines this observation, by exploring the relationship between popular culture and feminism while focusing in the moment of encoding messages, drawing on the Spice Girls as a case study. The questions that stimulate this study are concerned with feminism and post-feminism, with popular culture icons and the messages they encode, and with girl culture and its agentive possibilities.

  • 22 Eastenders and the Manufacture of Celebrity Anthony
EastEnders and the Manufacture of Celebrity Anthony McNicholas Communication and Media Research Institute University of Westminster Keywords: BBC, celebrity, publicity, professionalism, private lives, tabloid press Abstract When EastEnders launched in February 1985 it represented a new approach by the BBC to programme making in many ways. One of these was publicity. Traditionally, the BBC put little effort into programme promotion but for EastEnders a much more professional approach was adopted and more resources employed. In part the publicity was based on the real life histories of the actors involved, many of whom had been cast because they had similar backgrounds to the characters they played. However, the full-blooded entry of the BBC, the UK’s largest cultural producer into the business of publicity was to have unforeseen consequences, as the tabloid press, following a logic of its own created the kind of feeding frenzy around the actors’ private lives with which we are so familiar today. The launch of EastEnders, it is argued, represents therefore a significant moment in recent British cultural history as the private lives of relatively minor characters, as much as their on screen personas became public property. Introduction Social phenomena such as celebrity culture are not uniform across the globe though they may be present very widely. They are inflected differently, and ‘have numerous points of origin, numerous points of change’ (Turner 2004, 12) in the various places where they occur depending on the nature of the society out of which they both come and inform. In the UK, we ‘celebrate’ if that is the word, certain individuals or classes of people in our own distinct way.

  • "The Spice Girls Good at Marketing but Not Good for Their Market"
"The Spice Girls: Good at Marketing but Not Good for Their Market" 2/9/09 11:30 AM "The Spice Girls: Good at Marketing but Not Good for Their Market" by Pat Inglenook, a student The following essay, by student writer Pat Inglenook, evaluates the Spice Girl Phenomenon of the late 1990s. At the time this essay was written, Ginger Spice had just left the band. Critics predicted a quick decline of Spice Girl popularity. Inglenook chooses to evaluate the Spice Girls not as musicians or entertainers but as marketers of an image. When my eight-year-old sister asked for a Baby Spice talking doll (it plays Baby Spice's voice saying "In my bed I've got two teddies, a rabbit, two dollies" and "Fantastic. I love it"), and my eleven-year-old sister and her friends seemed to be dancing to Spice Girl CDs all the time, I started to wonder about this strange relationship between capitalism and culture in the late 1990s. What is it about the Spice Girls—Ginger Spice, Posh Spice, Baby Spice, Scary Spice, and Sporty Spice— that has attracted mobs of screaming, hysterical girls, aged seven to fourteen, and created for the Spice Girls a multi-million-dollar industry almost overnight? Clearly, my two sisters and their friends with their three-inch Spice Girl figurines ($3.99 each) and their seven-inch Spice Girl dolls ($7.99 each) and their Spice Girl Hair Play set, Nail Salon set, and Tattoo Graphix set ($9.97 each), to say nothing of the CDs ($ 16.85 each), have helped to support this industry.

  • ''Can You Handle My Truth?'': Authenticity and the Celebrity Star
‘‘Can You Handle My Truth?’’: Authenticity and the Celebrity Star Image ERIN MEYERS ‘‘People can take everything away from you, but they can’t take away your truth. But the question is, can you handle it? Can you handle my truth?’’ Britney Spears, Britney and Kevin: Chaotic, Episode One, Original Air Date May 17, 2005 INHIS 1985 BOOK INTIMATE STRANGERS:THE CULTURE OF CELEBRITY, Richard Schickel suggests that the history of celebrity in western culture is closely linked to the history of communication technology. As new forms of media develop and older forms find new ways to reach larger audiences more quickly, demand for and availability of information has skyrocketed (28). Ideally, easing and increasing the flow of information should result in the democratic ideal of well-informed public who are astutely tuned in to the world around them. However, Schickel sees the information explosion in modern society as having the opposite effect. As information is spread wider and faster, it necessarily becomes more sim- plified, relying more heavily on simple symbols ‘‘that crystallize and personify an issue, an ideal, a longing’’ (28). These symbols stand in for our needs and desires within modern society, helping us to make sense of the competing stimuli in our social world. According to Schickel, the celebrity image is a useful ideological symbol for constructing meaning within the modern western capitalist system. Generally, although not exclusively, emerging from the sports or entertainment industries, ce- lebrities are highly visible throughout the media, thus making them easily accessible symbols. More importantly, however, is the fact that celebrity images are not confined to their professional appearances, for The Journal of Popular Culture, Vol.
