2011 Annual Report From the President

Dear Friends of ELCR,

More than fifteen years ago, ELCR was born. The four founders: Anson W. H. Taylor Jr., Georgiana Hubbard McCabe, Melanie Heacock and Rick Jorgensen foresaw the great threat that land loss held over horsemen and they took action.

I have been involved with ELCR from the beginning and it has been a joy and a triumph watching the vision of the founders become a reality. Today, the threat of land loss is just as great, with 250 acres being developed each hour, not-in-my-backyard sentiment growing and the cost of feed and hay rising daily. ELCR is there, however, providing resources for dedicated horsemen to protect the places and spaces they love.

Over the past 4 years, ELCR directly assisted in the conservation process for 60,500 acres of farmland and Larry Byers 1,200 miles of trail. We know that these numbers are just scratching the surface. Many more find support through Performance Products , Kerrits Performance Equestrian our website, publications and Conservation Partners Apparel and SmartPak Equine. We were also selected as programs and offerings. an official charitable beneficiary of the Rolex Three-Day Event and were awarded free, full page color In 2011, ELCR took the next step: developing our Education advertising in The Chronicle of the . Program. We secured a two-year $150,000 grant to build a comprehensive education curriculum and hired our Without the support of our dedicated friends and donors, Education Coordinator, Denise O’Meara to develop and this work would be left undone. I’d like to take this disseminate our new materials. We also received a $10,000 opportunity to thank each and every one of you whose grant from the USA Equestrian Trust to support regional financial contributions make our work possible. With education forums and a $9,000 grant from the Dudley T. your help, we will continue our mission to “advance the Dougherty Foundation to develop the Farm and Ranch conservation of land for horse-related activity.” I hope that Land Best Management Practices curriculum. The advent of you will continue to partner with us ensure the future of our the Education Program will increase our capacity to provide equestrian pursuits. more robust references and resources to slow the tide of equine land loss. Sincerely,

As we are expanding our programs the equine community has noticed ELCR’s dedication to conserving not just land, trails, and hayfields, but also our industry, sport and lifestyle. This year, ELCR enjoyed the renewed support of Larry Byers such national corporations as AIM Equine Network, Bayer President Animal Health, Breyer/Reeves International, Kentucky www.ELCR.org

2011 Annual Report The Conservation Partners Program Provides an Educational Advantage

he ELCR Conservation Partners program has always experience an increased number of conference calls, new provided the best information and experts on regional educational forums and greater access to the T equine land and trail conservation. In 2011, with the information that impacts equine and land conservation launch of our new educational initiative, we were able to organizations. Our Spring Trail Series Partners to lead the nation in answering, “Right here!” featured sustainable trail design, dealing with multi-use trail systems and a presenter from Back Country Horsemen of America discussing the BCHA and US Forest Service’s trail classifi cations. In the fall, our focus was on farm and ranchland protection and partners were treated to an expert presentation on conservation easements and a panel discussion on Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) programs.

Additionally, the Partners Program was honored to receive quite a few new prestigious national members Photo courtesy of Keith Mountain Photo courtesy including United States Equestrian Federation and Bayer Animal Health, who sponsored the program for both 2011 and 2012.

As our education program continues to grow, so does our Conservation Partners program. In 2012, Partners will
