HIKING

Hike across Foxfanna 3 hrs / 01 Jul – 31 Aug Operated by Hurtigruten

You will start your trip by driving to Gruve 7, an active coal mine. From here you will continue on foot over the Foxfonna glacier towards Foxdalen - as you make your way towards the opening of Foxdalen you will find some old hunters cabins where you stop for lunch, before returning back to town. Approx. 11km.

You will follow the Longyear valley up to Nyben where you will find yourself overlooking the incredible landscape that was created by the force of the Lars Glacier. The final section of the climb will take you to the mountain ridge where you can enjoy a well-deserved lunch as you take in the incredible views.

You will start the tour by driving towards , then travel up the mountain to where the only running coal mine in Longyearbyen is located, mine number 7. At the top is the Kjell Henriksen Observatory for Aurora research. You will stop here to enjoy the fantastic view across Adventdalen and the fjord.

When there is no snow left there is still a way to experience being pulled by dogs on special made wheeled sleds. As you travel at a good speed there may be an opportunity to see some of the local wildlife such as reindeer. Experience the walrus on a guided boat trip to , an island where colonies of these mighty marine mammals are often observed on the beach. Half a century ago, when their numbers were down to as few as a couple of hundred Walrus hunting was banned. The ‘det gamle Nordpolet’ store had lain forgotten, but has now been renovated for champagne tasting. It used to be where the miners came to collect their quota of alcohol; now you can taste the exclusive and delicious bubbles. The champagne list is rich and wide and boasts many bottles of rare vintage.

LONGYEARBYEN

Longyearbyen in a Nutshell: Sightseeing with a local 2 hrs / All Year Operated by Hurtigruten Svalbard

The tour begins in Longyear Valley and heads through the town then out towards Adventdalen; Mine 7. During the drive through the valley you might spot Svalbard Reindeer. Travel onto Hotellneset, to visit the site of the Global Seed Vault. You will have plenty of stops for photographs along the way.

CYCLING

Summer arctic cycling 5 hrs / 18 May – 30 Sep Operated by Hurtigruten Svalbard

The trail starts in Longyearbyen where you learn about its history, then head east on the old Burmaroad to Hotelneset, where you stop to enjoy the scenery and magnificent birdlife while having drinks and biscuits. After the break continue to Adventvalley and learn about the rich coal mining history in the area before returning to Longyearbyen.

HISTORIC EXPERIENCE

Your guide will pick you up from your accommodation and drive you to Gruve 3, just as the miners did. Once at the mine, change into miners’ clothes and with your headlamp peak around corners and experience what it must have been like to be a miner.
