The league leaders had dropped two points in their fi rst game since resump- tion of the league last week, when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Umm Salal. But yesterday, Duhail were back in business as goals from Mohamed Muntari (fourth minute) and substitute Paulo Edmilson (80th minute) ensured they stayed on course for the title. With three matches remaining, the Red Knights need to win two to clinch the title. One of those matches is against defending champions Al Sadd. Rayyan’s draw against Al Arabi on Sat- urday could prove costly for the Lions. Al Gharafa, who had beaten Al Arabi 1-0 last week, could not repeat that performance and had to play second fi ddle to Al Duhail, who had more of the ball. The Cheetahs remained on 31 points, but retained their fourth posi- tion in standings. Defender Sultan al-Breik had a role in Al Duhail’s both goals as he provided the assists with measured crosses from the left.

THE ABA YEARS A LOOK BACK AT THE ABA YEARS THE COACHES 1967-69 - CLIFF HAGAN 1969-70 - CLIFF HAGAN & MAX WILLIAMS 1970-71 - MAX WILLIAMS & BILL BLAKELEY 1971-72 - TOM NISSALKE 1972-73 - BABE MCCARTHY & DAVE BROWN 1973-74 - TOM NISSALKE 1974-76 - BOB BASS THE STARS CLIFF HAGAN FIRST PLAYER-COACH Player-Coach Cliff Hagan was a big reason for the Chaparrals early success … he was a fi ve-time All-Star with the St. Louis Hawks prior to arriving in Dallas … his physical style was perfect for the ABA and in his fi rst season of 1967-68, Hagan averaged 18.2 points per game, leading to another All-Star selection. He was relieved of his coaching duties in January 1970, when General Manager Max Williams took over as head coach. JOHN BEASLEY 1968, 1969 & 1970 ABA ALL-STAR John Beasley was the biggest surprise for the Dallas Chaparrals in their inaugural season … in his fi rst year, Beasley averaged 19.7 points per game … he made the ABA All-Star Team each of his fi rst three seasons and was named the MVP of the 1969 All-Star Game … he also garnered All-ABA Second Team honors in 1968 and 1969 … Beasley ranks second in Spurs ABA history in games, points, fi eld goals made and fi eld goals attempted … for his career with the Chaparrals, Beasley averaged 17.9 points and 11.0 rebounds while shooting .494 from the fi eld and .828 from the free throw line. RON BOONE 1968-69 ABA ALL-ROOKIE FIRST TEAM A major bright spot of the Chaparrals’ 1968-69 season was rookie phenom Ron Boone … Boone attracted very little attention during his college career at Idaho State, but that all changed when he got to the pros … Boone fi nished second to Warren Armstrong of Oakland for Rookie of the Year accolades … in his rookie season, Boone averaged 18.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting .434 from the fi eld and .812 from the free throw line.

  • 'Meant for Basketball'
The Blair County Sports Hall Of Fame - 2012 INDUCTEE PROFILE ‘Meant for basketball’ Appleman left mark on Williamsburg, Blair County By Jim Lane Altoona Mirror t's been said that Williamsburg kids learn to shoot hoops as soon as they Ican walk. Don Appleman did. “We grew up with the tradition,” said Appleman, who has lived almost all of his 67 years in his hometown as a student, athlete, coach, athletic director and leader of the communi- ty's summer recreation program. Appleman is being inducted into the Blair County Sports Hall of Fame's Class of 2012 for his accomplishments as a player, although he's also been a successful coach for more than 20 years. Appleman was a three-time all- state basketball player at Williamsburg, including first team as a senior in 1962, when he was named the Pennsylvania High School Player of the Year for Class B and C. He aver- aged 21 points per game for his high school career, which was long before the 3-point shot, and held the Blair County scoring record of 2,100 points for 33 seasons before it was broken by Central's Ben Bithell in 1996. “When I was in grade school, the high school team started to be suc- cessful. They won the [Class C] state championship in 1958, and I kept the statistics,” he noted, recalling players like Galen Hall and Eldon Lower. Growing up, Appleman admired coaches Bill Casper and Bill Rhodes. Casper coached the Blue Pirates' state championship team in 1958 but left to coach in Pittsburgh when Appleman was a freshman.
